Posted on: Wilkes Co. Ga Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ga/Wilkes/10842 Surname: Andrews ------------------------- This thank you note to Suzanne Walton Ammons. My interest in Miss Andrews stems from reading The War-Time Journal of a Georgia Girl, 1864-1865. I know she had siblings and I assume some of them married and had children. Are any of their descendants still in the South? Is the family home of Judge Andrews still standing or is any of the land of the original plantation owned today by the family? Thank you so much for your interest and very kind help. H.Edward Lueders

Posted on: Wilkes Co. Ga Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ga/Wilkes/10837 Surname: Rhodes, Frankopoulos, Frankinson ------------------------- Does anyone have access to naturalization records for Wilkes County for the period around 1895-1900? I'm not sure whether to look for these on the local level or through the Georgia Dept. of Archives. I am looking for information on my great-grandfather, Cleanthus Dimitrios Frankopoulos (name later changed to Cline Demetris Frankinson)who came here from Greece ca. 1895. He married a woman from Wilkes County, Frances Elizabeth "Fannie" Rhodes, on September 4, 1897, and I believe they lived in the Athens area for a time, so I'm not sure whether naturalization would have been filed through Wilkes County or Clarke County. Can anyone point me in the right direction for finding these records? Lisa Bridges

Posted on: Wilkes Co. Ga Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ga/Wilkes/10834 Surname: Gartrell, McElroy ------------------------- Hello Marilyn, I have tentatively entered Caroline Gartrell in my database as the daughter of Joseph Gartrell Jr. and his unnamed black cook based on the following messages posted on the Gartrell genforum by Charlene Lewis: "Could Joseph Gartrell Jr. have fathered children by slaves? According to our family's oral tradition, my ancestor, Caroline Gartrell McElroy, was born on the Gartrell plantation in Wilkes Co., GA in 1832. She was rumored to be the daughter of the slave owner and his cook, a slave. (Gartrell genforum, Charlene Lewis ([email protected]), Jan. 13, 2001, Messages 212, 214.) Joseph would have been about 44 years old when Caroline was born (Joseph's oldest son, Lucius, was only 11 years old in 1832). In addition, the 1850 slave schedule indicates that Joseph Gartrell Jr. had 62 slaves in October 1850. This included four female slaves who were 18 years old; that is, were born in 1832. One of these four could be Caroline. (1850 Slave Schedule (M432), National Archives, Seattle, Entry for Joseph Gartrell, Subdivision 94, Wilkes Co., GA, Roll 96, p. 67.) Do you have any family traditions or other information regarding the parents of Caroline Gartrell? Do you know her mother's name? Do you have any information regarding the Gartrells or their plantation. All I know is that it was called Mt. Sylvan and was located 12 miles from Washington. By the way, I am descended from Louisa Gartrell, Joseph and Elizabeth Gartrell's third child. Short of DNA testing, it is a daunting task to prove these kinds of relationships, but not impossible. I just read an interesting book called "Slaves in the Family" by Edward Ball in which he, a descendant of the slaveholding Ball family of South Carolina, tracked down some of the descendants of former slaves that had been held by his family. The author goes into some detail in revealing his investigative methods, but in large part, he relied on 18th and 19th century plantation records that were preserved by the Ball family. Unfortunately, I do not know of any comparalbe repository of Gartrell plantation records. Do you? The Ball book is on sale at Half-Price Books for $5 if you want me to pick up a copy for you. Best regards, Bob Cummings of Seattle ([email protected])
Posted on: Wilkes Co. Ga Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ga/Wilkes/10832 Surname: Gartrell ------------------------- Hello J. Couch, Thank you so much for taking the initiative to post this Wilkes County query on the Internet! You may have already received a response to you query privately by email, but I just wanted to point out a couple things: (1) Your family's genealogy starting with Harry Chester and Mamie Grace Gartrell and going back into the mists of time--or at least four or five generations--has been posted on the Gartrell Genforum in one of the William Gartrell's blockbuster messages. I'm afraid that I don't have the specific Message Number on hand (the Message Number allows you to go right to the specific information you are looking for); if you have trouble locating the information, just let me know, and I will give you more specific instructions. (2) You say that "your grandmother had a family tree done that started with three Gartrell brothers coming from France to fight in the Revolutionary War." Your line of Gartrells actually extends far back into the Colonial period, and the three Gartrell brothers--Joseph, Francis, and John--all of whom did indeed serve during the Revolutionary War, came from Maryland, not from France. I am descended from Joseph, the oldest of the three brothers, while you are descended from John, the youngest. By the way, Lucuis Gartrell is a grandson of Joseph. I am descended from Lucius' younger sister, Louisa Amarintha Gartrell. Hope some of this information has interesting and/or useful! Best regards, Bob Cummings in Seattle ([email protected])

Hi Lewis, I don't suppose you have a William Joel Davis, do you? He was b. September 14, 1802 in Rockingham Co., Virginia; d. September 08, 1858 in Oglethorpe Co, Georgia. He married Angelina Lumpkin on December 26, 1827 in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. She was b. June 28, 1811 in Oglethorpe Co., Georgia; d. November 10, 1847 in Oglethorpe Co., Georgia. I have Angelina's entire line, but poor Joel has no predecessors in my files. I am also looking for Martha F. Davis: b. December 24, 1830. She married William Jarrett on January 28, 1848. He was born January 14, 1812. I am pretty sure that these two came from either Jackson County or Clarke County, Georgia---or at least the surrounding counties of these two areas. I hope that you might have a connections. Thanks so much! Sandy :o) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lewis M. Hello, I am trying to find the relatives of the Maguires that are buried in Washington Catholic cemetery! BRIEN MAGUIRE, 1827-1901 EDWARD J. MAGUIRE, died 1881 AGE 23 YRS. JOHN MAGUIRE, (IRELAND) 1869, AGE 73 YRS. MARY BERTHA MAGUIRE, 1899 (W.A.&S.F.) MARY A., MAGUIRE died; 1892-AGE 67 YRS. MARY A., died; 1882, AGE 27 YRS. SARAH FORD MAGUIRE, died; 1899 wife of W. A. Does anyone have any information on these Maguires? I believe Mary could have been from Ireland and perhaps, her maiden name was HARDIMAN. All that the family is aware of- is- that Mary married a Maguire..don't have his given name..she brought her three brothers to America abt. 1856 after their parents died during the p.famine. Would appreciate hearing from anyone with a connection or any information on this family. I think this may be her family as her brother Patrick Hardiman married there in Wilkes Co. Ga. to Harriet HARRIS. They also had relatives in Giles Co. Virginia. Thank you very much. Jackie~California
