Hello, Amanda, I can't answer any of your questions about this mailing list, but I'm certainly glad to hear from you. I've been to Washington County, GA several times to research -- the last being October 1999. I found everyone at the Courthouse and the Genealogy Society Library extremely helpful. I also found a lot of information even though I had been led to believe that, "you can't find any olds records in Washington County because Sherman burned the Courthouse." I found, however, that the County Clerk of Washington County in 1864, Mr. Brookins, hid all of the probate, census and marriage record books so they were not burned. I know that the Court records and land records were burned, but the land records were reconstructed after the War. Let me tell all on this list, Washington County, GA is a great place to do research! I have a number of lines that come out of Washington County: JORDAN, ELTON, SHURLING, LONG, BROOKS, SUMNER, PHILLIPS/PHILIPS -- maybe more. One of my brick walls is John PHILLIPS and his wife Susannah who were in SC and had their children there, then moved to Washington County before 1830. Their daughter, Jane Della (Jincy) PHILLIPS, married Jethro SUMNER on April 04, 1830 in Sandersville. I found Susannah's Will at the Courthouse, which was a wonderful fine. Until that time, I did not know that John and Susannah had moved to GA and that Jane married in Sandersville. The Will also gave me the names of John and Susannah's daughters' names. However, I have been unable to find John PHILLIPS/PHILIPS parents names or Susannah's maiden name. I've visited my ELTON g.g.grandparents, John Brooks ELTON and Susan Clark SHURLING, at the Bridges Family Cemetery south of Tennille a couple of times. Last October I found my g.g.g.grandparents, Jethro and Jane SUMNER's graves in the Jordan-Sumner Cemetery outside of Tennille. It has been wonderful to be able to put flowers on their graves. Another brick wall is Mathew JORDAN who married Martha Ann SUMNER, d/o Jethro and Jane SUMNER. I found a Mathew JORDAN about the right age in Hancock County, GA in the 1850 Census, but no proof that this is the correct Mathew. His mother was Elizabeth (Betsy) JORDAN (actually spelled JORDON in the census) and several brothers and sisters. They were living also with a TYRE family in this census. I know that Mathew was born somewhere in NC, but have been unable to find his parents. My big, big brick wall has been Mary Polly BROOKS who married John L. ELTON and were the parents of John Brooks ELTON who married Susan Clark SHURLING. The information that I had was that Mary Polly BROOKS was born in NC about 1786 d/o James BROOKS and Elizabeth TRAYLOR, but I have been told by researchers on both the BROOKS listserv and the TRAYLOR listserv that they did not have a daughter named either Mary or Polly. Therefore, I have gone back to square one with Mary Polly BROOKS. Any help with any of the above "brick walls" would be much appreciated. Also, I would like to hear from anyone researching any of these lines in Washington County, GA.
