All of the records were not destroyed by fire. Washington County, GA is a wonderful place to research. They have all the original early census, marriage, probate records; most of the land records were reconstructed after the war. They also have a wonderful Genealogy Society. bp ----- Original Message ----- From: David Manning <dmannin@centurytel.net> To: <GAWASHIN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, March 14, 2000 9:38 PM Subject: Isaac Washington Hello Group, I have just joined your group and believe I might be kin to the Isaac Manning in the 1820 Census of Washington County, GA. Hello Everyone! Well, after many unsucessful tries, I finally got the Wash. Co. Genweb page uploaded to the internet. None of the e-mail links work right now. I will fix that . In the meantime, if anyone needs to conatct me, you all have my e-mail address. I will be adding stuff over the weekend, so be patient with me. Many, many hours went into this, but considering it was my first webpage, I guess it turned out pretty decent. I'll also have the GenConnect Boards up and working this weekend. Since I'm new to this...any ideas, suggestions or comments are appreciated! Hope you enjoy! http://www.rootsweb.com/~gawashin/Washington/index.html Amanda Brown Logue

Hello All, I'm new to the Washington Co. list and am researching ELLIS and FRIZZELL (various spellings). I have hopes of corrusponding with other persons researching these lines. My ELLISES are descended or related to Joseph ELLIS of Somerset CO. MD who married Esther. Some of his children, named in his will, migrated to Washington Co. GA. Some of the names we are looking at are Levin ELLIS, Isaac ELLIS, Stephen ELLIS and associated family members. My gggg grandmother, Tempy (ELLIS) Frizzell was either the daughter or granddaughter of Joseph Frizzell. She was born c. 1781 and was kidnapped by Creek Indians when she was 7 during the raid on the SCARLETT cabin in about 1786-7 when the county split into Greene. Tempy met and married Thomas Frizzell of Washington Co. and they later moved to Pike Co. AL. If anyone thinks theu=ir ELLIS or FRIZZELLS are related to or accosicated, please email and we can share. Sincerely, Cynthia SIMS Kirkland

Hello, I live in Torrance, CA. and am researching my mother's family in GA. They lived in Washington Co. and moved to Johnson Co....Adrain GA. I am looking for info. on Enoch A. Oliver who was a sherrif in Adrain in the late 1800s; he married Evaline (Evie) P. Braddy in 1891 in Washington Co. They had 6 children: Dennis, Thomas Edward,Cleo, Claude, Thelma, and Mary...all born in Adrain. My big question is who was the real mother of Enoch...Melica Mayo shows on the census as having raised him, but on Enoch's death certificate Millin Walker is listed as mother..info. was given by son Thomas Edward Oliver. Can you help me out? Thanks in advance, Barbara Nilsson Bajnilsson@aol.com
Hello everyone! I'm busy building the new Washington County Genweb page and I was wondering if anyone had anything that they wanted to add? I'll take family histories, records, cemeteries, civil war stuff, surnames you're researching...just about anything. I hope to have the page up before too long. Hang in there. I'll send the URL when it's on the net. Thanks! Amanda
Hello, Amanda, I can't answer any of your questions about this mailing list, but I'm certainly glad to hear from you. I've been to Washington County, GA several times to research -- the last being October 1999. I found everyone at the Courthouse and the Genealogy Society Library extremely helpful. I also found a lot of information even though I had been led to believe that, "you can't find any olds records in Washington County because Sherman burned the Courthouse." I found, however, that the County Clerk of Washington County in 1864, Mr. Brookins, hid all of the probate, census and marriage record books so they were not burned. I know that the Court records and land records were burned, but the land records were reconstructed after the War. Let me tell all on this list, Washington County, GA is a great place to do research! I have a number of lines that come out of Washington County: JORDAN, ELTON, SHURLING, LONG, BROOKS, SUMNER, PHILLIPS/PHILIPS -- maybe more. One of my brick walls is John PHILLIPS and his wife Susannah who were in SC and had their children there, then moved to Washington County before 1830. Their daughter, Jane Della (Jincy) PHILLIPS, married Jethro SUMNER on April 04, 1830 in Sandersville. I found Susannah's Will at the Courthouse, which was a wonderful fine. Until that time, I did not know that John and Susannah had moved to GA and that Jane married in Sandersville. The Will also gave me the names of John and Susannah's daughters' names. However, I have been unable to find John PHILLIPS/PHILIPS parents names or Susannah's maiden name. I've visited my ELTON g.g.grandparents, John Brooks ELTON and Susan Clark SHURLING, at the Bridges Family Cemetery south of Tennille a couple of times. Last October I found my g.g.g.grandparents, Jethro and Jane SUMNER's graves in the Jordan-Sumner Cemetery outside of Tennille. It has been wonderful to be able to put flowers on their graves. Another brick wall is Mathew JORDAN who married Martha Ann SUMNER, d/o Jethro and Jane SUMNER. I found a Mathew JORDAN about the right age in Hancock County, GA in the 1850 Census, but no proof that this is the correct Mathew. His mother was Elizabeth (Betsy) JORDAN (actually spelled JORDON in the census) and several brothers and sisters. They were living also with a TYRE family in this census. I know that Mathew was born somewhere in NC, but have been unable to find his parents. My big, big brick wall has been Mary Polly BROOKS who married John L. ELTON and were the parents of John Brooks ELTON who married Susan Clark SHURLING. The information that I had was that Mary Polly BROOKS was born in NC about 1786 d/o James BROOKS and Elizabeth TRAYLOR, but I have been told by researchers on both the BROOKS listserv and the TRAYLOR listserv that they did not have a daughter named either Mary or Polly. Therefore, I have gone back to square one with Mary Polly BROOKS. Any help with any of the above "brick walls" would be much appreciated. Also, I would like to hear from anyone researching any of these lines in Washington County, GA. The courthouse in Sandersville, Washington County, has wonderful records -- land, marriage, census, etc. I was told before I went there last October that "they had no records cause Sherman burned the courthouse." Sherman did burn the courthouse, but the clerk, Mr. Brookins, saved the marriage and census records by hiding them at his house. The land/tax records were recreated after the War. Hello all-- I am earching for information on parents of George A. IVEY, Sr. He died in 1917 and is buried in Westview Cemetery in Augusta GA (J. A. Connor plot). He was married to Elizabeth "Bessie" MILLS. She married a GOODWIN after his death. She is buried next to him. Also, in the same plot was Robert A. Mills, Sr., believed to be her father, and an Elizabeth, poss. her mother. There is no marriage record for George and Bessie in Richmond Co. I am wondering if his family was from Warren or Washington Co. as there are Ivy, Ivey's in these counties. His middle name was prob. Avery, as my grandfather was named George Avery Ivey. Believe George A. Ivey, Sr.'s mother was Mary Alice HOLSENBECK. I believe she was living with Mrs. J. A. Connor of Augusta GA in later years. The closest census record I can find is the 1870 Washington with Joseph Ivey 45 and wife, Mary A. 30 with children: Silas F. 14, Ruth I. 9, Robert 6, John G. 5, and Magnolia 2/12. Does anyone have info on this IVEY family? Am not a member of List now. Please reply to mt.warren@sk.sympatico.ca Thanks, Melissa
