Nancy, Jim, & Betty: Re visiting Sandersville, GA to research.......I was born in Oconee, Washington Cty, GA, and occasionally go back for visits. The library in Sandersville has a very nice room set aside for genealogy research with a computer available. I had only a couple of hours to spend there on my visit but found the library workers quite helpful along with finding some great information. The Historical Society happened to be closed the day I was there and haven't had an opportunity to go back when it was open. I also recommend the Holiday Inn Express. It's centrally located, new, and quite nice. Regarding the cemeteries....if the following names (COX, PIERCE, AVANT, TOMPKINS) happen to be in your line, be sure to go to Oconee and visit the recently reclaimed COX/PIERCE/AVANT cemetery. The descendants (including myself) were there in March for a dedication ceremony. There is a Revolutionary War soldier (Moses Cox) and a Civil War soldier (James Ransome Avant) buried there. The ceremony conducted in March was quite impressive. It's well worth your time to drive over there. There is a chain across the drive up to the cemetery but a key is kept by the owner of the only local store in Oconee. You can't miss it. Diane Thompson Dixon
After many trips to Sandersville I found this Holiday Inn the best and most reasonable. It's also New. Also, the office of Vital Records (Health Department) is across the intersection from the Holiday Inn. This is where they have birth and death records. Holiday Inn 508 S Harris St, Sandersville, GA 31082-2411 Phone: (912)553-1414 The Historical Society is behind the court house on the square. But call as they are not open all the time. Washington County Historical 129 Jones St, Sandersville, GA 31082-1768 Phone: (912)552-6965 The Court House on the square also has the only Georgia 1890 census which can be purchased at the Historical Society. The Library is also very new and is on S. Harris Street (I believe, but it's easy to spot). Eating places other than fast food are rare but the Villa South Restaurant on S. Harris is very good and reasonable. There is also a Motel there that I've stayed in several times that's good. I just switched to the Holiday Inn because it was new. Hope this helps. Who are you researching down there? My wife's mother was born there and thus the reason for all our trips. Hope to here back from you on the names your looking for. Nancy, Sandersville and Washington County are a wonderful place to research. I always stay at the Villa South; I'm pretty sure they are on the internet. The Genealogy Society is across the street from the courthouse, which is on the town square. You won't have any trouble finding it. Everyone is extremely helpful. The courthouse has wonderful records -- even though Sherman did burn the courthouse in 1864. The County Clerk at that time, Mr. Brookins, buried the records books for census, wills, etc. The Superior Clerk unfortunately did not. However, most of the tax/land records have been recreated because folks came in a re-registered their land after the new courthouse was built. If you are looking for any trial-type records, they were burned. However, you can find newspaper reports from the Sandersville papers from that era at the Genealogy Society. Be sure to check with the Genealogy Society before you go. The last time I was there, they were only open on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. I do think you can make an appointment for other times, but I feel it is better to go when there are others there who can help. What names are you researching? I have a lot of lines from Washington County: LONG, ELTON, ADLER, SHURLING, BROOKS, SUMNER, PHILLIPS/PHILIPS, and JORDAN. I know you will have a wonderful time there. Plan to stay several days as there are lots of cemeteries to cover also. Good luck with your research. Looking for information or descendants of Clement C. Brown, born Sep 4, 1831. His father was Martin H. Brown and grandfather Richard Brown. They were only in Bibb for about 10 years and then moved to Randolph Co. By 1879 Clement C. Brown was living in Washington County, GA. Thanks. Bill Brown
All these Cowart family subjects are flying onto my email but no one's talking about the Cowart family. Does anyone know about them? Gwen Brooks
Thanks, Rodney!!! This is indeed the book I am talking about... is a valuable source for just about any one with connections of any kind in Washington CO or nearby locations. One of the authors, Gene D. Brantley, was our Braswell genealogist, and I purchased my book from his daughter, Leigh. I just wanted anyone interested to be able to find their own copies as well.
