    3. Wow, Diane! This is wonderful! I knew that an older application had referenced that book, but I wasn't able to find it when I tried googling it. I also had planned on doing some "analysis" to prove George was Colesby's son (e.g., they were listed next to each other in the 1820 census, George had a son named Colby, Isaac was a witness to George's wife's will, etc.). But the info in the book will be a BIG help! Thank you so much. 3. Hello, Janet, I just joined the DAR as a Colby Smith descendant through son Isaac. I am national number 905574. With my application I submitted documentation to correct many errors in the information the DAR had on record about Colby "Colesby" Smith, which they verified and the National Board accepted on 21 Apr 2012. Feel free to obtain a copy of my application to use as a guideline for completing the application for your prospective member. The most important new documentation I submitted were pages from the book "Colby Smith and His Descendants," by Gene D. Brantley, Robert A. smith & Carllene S. Veal (all descendants); copyright pending, Oct. 1998; privately published by the authors [now out of print]. The good news for you is that the book has been digitized and is available Online from the LDS Library at this URL: https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/show?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fcatalog-search -api%3A8080%2Fwww-catalogapi-webservice%2Fitem%2F985232 Under the NOTES section you will find "To view a digital version of this item click here." When you click on the word "here" it will link you to a PDF file of the book. It will take a LOOOONNG time to download because the book contains over 1100 pages. However, it will be worth the wait because you can then print out copies of relevant pages to include with an application. Start it downloading then go clean your house or go shopping or something, because I am NOT kidding about it being a long download. (I have DSL Internet service, but if you have cable or faster Internet service, it might no take as long for you.) Page viii or 1a [it's not marked] shows a chart of the Colby Smith - Anna Henry family which includes George b ca. 1798. Page 7, 2nd paragraph beginning "According to family legend,..., mentions George and his place of birth. Page 13 provides a list of all the children of Colby Smith, the birth & death dates, if known, and the name of the spouse, if known. Page 843 begins the section on George Smith, wife Lavinia and their descendants. There are 3 unnumbered pages between 842 and 843 which show 2 title pages for the George Smith section of the book, plus a family chart for George and Lavinia Smith and their 12 children. All of these pages should be helpful to you. I also included with my documentation an "Analysis of Records" in which I pointed out and further explained specific items in each piece of documentation so the reviewers in the National Office would clearly understand what I was documenting and why. Hope this is the information you need. Let me know if you have any questions, or if I can send you anything from my files that might help you. 2. Thanks, so the guys name was Oscar instead of Harvey. I didn't know that it went to trial. I searched Harper T Gilmore because you are much more likely to get hits by using a first, middle initial and last name or a first and last name in old newspapers than entering a full name. It would be unusual to find a persons full name in a newspaper unless it is an obituary. 2. Yes, I am from GA. From a story I heard there was a posse, but either people were friends or they were so scared of him. I had heard that he went to Texas, but a few years ago I found that he came back because he killed someone there. (that might be 5 he killed) One guy he killed because a black man bumped into him, another man told him to do to him what he was going to the black man. So Harper shot him, the newspaper article said they were both from prominent families. He was one bad guy. ---------- Original Message ---------- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [GAWASHIN] Harvey Roughton Date: Tue, 11 Sep 2012 20:27:32 -0400 (EDT) Have you found prison records? 3. I sent the link through to the historical newspapers because they are a great resource for Georgia researchers and especially in finding the type of information that has been discussed most of the day on this list regarding Harper Tucker Gilmore. I searched Harper T Gilmore because you are much more likely to get hits by using a first, middle initial and last name or a first and last name in old newspapers than entering a full name. It would be unusual to find a persons full name in a newspaper unless it is an obituary.
