Notes for MARTIN CORBITT: Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia Volume II Pages 73 - 74 Martin Corbitt 1810 - 1895 Clinch County, GA Martin Corbitt, a son of Isham and Amelia Corbitt, was born in Tennessee, August 18, 1810, and died at his home in Clinch County, October 20, 1895. He was married twice. His first wife, by whom there was no issue, was Frances (Fannie), a daughter of Rev. William Smith, RS (Volume I). After her death he married Lydia, a daughter of Isaac Curry and his wife, Fannie Green Curry. She was born in Tennessee in December 1821, and died November 20, 1875. Notes for COLONEL WASHINGTON CORBITT: Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia Volume X Pages 91-92 COLONEL WASHINGTON CORBITT 1834 - 1915 Coffee County, GA Colonel Washington Corbitt was born in Hamilton County, TN, a son of Elisha Corbitt and Mary Gann (Gand?) (Volume II). Colonel is a name used frequently in the Corbitt family and in this instance is not a military title. He was born on January 10, 1834. By the 1850's, he, along with his widowed mother and many of his brothers and sisters, had moved to Clinch County, GA, in the vicinity of Mudd Creek. He later resided in southwestern Coffee County, in that portion which later became Atkinson County, near the town of Willocoochee (GMD 1026). His brothers and sisters who moved to this area were: 1 - Calvin (Volume IV), 2 - Thomas (Volume V), 3 - Allen (Volume I), 4 - Eliza, 5 - Nancy, 6 - Henry, 7 - Monroe, and 8 - Wealthy Corbitt. He married first on February 17, 1866, Rocanne Summerlin, daughter of Allen Summerlin and Anna (Atwood) Summerlin (Volume II) who came here as pioneers from Bulloch County, GA. They had the following children (as listed on the family group sheet). His first wife died on March 18, 1882. He married Mary Anne Roberts on May 21, 1882. She was the daughter of Robert Roberts (Volume III). Her date of birth was December 3, 1853. To them were born the following children (as listed on the family group sheet). Colonel Washington was also the father of W. J. Corbitt, mother not known. On August 17, 1857, he enlisted in the Seminole War in Tallahassee, FL, for six months. Colonel was discharged at Fort Brooke, FL, on January 29, 1858. Colonel Washington Corbitt served the Confederacy in Company H, 29th Georgia Regiment and mustered as 3rd Lieutenant. This regiment saw much hard service in the battles around Atlanta in 1864, in which many of it's officers and men were lost. Colonel W. served through to the end of the war and was in command of the company when it was dispersed at Macon, GA. Colonel Washington Corbitt died on February 27, 1915, followed by his second wife Mary Ann Roberts on April 21, 1937. He and both of his wives are buried in the Antioch Church Cemetery near Kirkland, GA.
