These last few weeks we've covered Rowell, Mims, O'Steen, Johns, and several others that overlap in three of my families, my husband's paternal and maternal lines and also my materal line. I didn't realize these families connected until this last wave of activity. I use Family Tree Maker, an older version 6. I have a separate file for each family: Griffis, Woodard, Nelson, Daniell, etc., each with several thousand individuals in them. Question: I wonder how ya'll keep your files. Do you have each family in a separate file, or do you have just one big file? The reason I've never merged them together is because if I share a GED Com file, it would include too many other families of no interest and probably be too large to email. I'm open to suggestions. Email me off-list if this is inappropriate for list discussion. Teresa, [email protected]
Teresa, I use FTM 10 and love it. I started with FTM 3 (in 1996), and graduated up to 10 so far. I started out with a separate file for my side of the family and one for my husband at the time, but when I got brave enough I merged them together and it went beautifully.....and I am glad I did, I have found it makes life a lot simplier for me and the connective allied families are all right there without having to look in two or more files.......I can break down my gedcoms to as few or as many generations as I want when sharing, and I can also put them in word format and delete anything that is of little or no interest to others......but I do find, when you share someone usually finds something/one they didn't know they were looking for....... Just my thoughts, Sheila Teresa Griffis <[email protected]> wrote: These last few weeks we've covered Rowell, Mims, O'Steen, Johns, and several others that overlap in three of my families, my husband's paternal and maternal lines and also my materal line. Teresa, I use FTM 10 and I have found it to be of great help. I also finally merged my families together. I agree with Sheila that it is much easier that way. Sheila, I am not very "intelligent" on FTM and continue to learn. I have not yet learned to convert gedoms to Word yet....can you help on that? Any info will be appreciated. I think this is very appropriate for the list. Any assistance or encouragement on ways to maintain our files has to do with Genealogy and can make it easier for our "neighbors". >From: Rd C <[email protected]> >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Subject: Re: [GAWARE] Genealogy Question >Date: Thu, 3 Nov 2005 18:34:04 -0800 (PST) > >Teresa, >I use FTM 10 and love it. Keep them that way, if you merge them it will be to large, trust me. Been there and done that! If you put them all in just one file, FTM after so many names throws out the ones that you put in first! So your data vanishes................................................ YES FTM has unlimited space YES if you put each family seperate it seems. I was told this by the makers of FTM them selves Gail ----- Original Message ----- From: "Teresa Griffis" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, November 03, 2005 4:55 PM Subject: [GAWARE] Genealogy Question > These last few weeks we've covered Rowell, Mims, O'Steen, Johns, and > several others that overlap in three of my families, my husband's paternal > and maternal lines and also my materal line.
