Christopher, I am looking for a John Corbitt who was in St. Johns County, Fl in 1860 age 29 (I don't have the notes in front of me). He was a farmer and farming with him or for him was James Cone. James Cones' whole family was listed with him. My great grandmother as one of James Cone's children. She later , in 1864 married my great grandfather James Bennett. I think my James Bennett was connected to the Ware County Bennetts who later turned up in Clinch County, Ga. A James Bennett was in the family of Richard A. Bennett, no relationship given, but I have read that Richard A, had no sons. I also read that John Bennett had three "missing" sons who would be siblings of William C. Bennett who was also in Clinch and later in Volusia County where James Bennett and wife also settled. I'm probably confusing the issue but I also noticed in a Bennett gedcom that a Bennett married into the Corbits, Daniel Corbit, I believe. I have been trying to find John Corbit in the 1870 Florida census along with my Cones and Bennetts. Is there the remotest chance that this John Corbit is connected to your Corbits and would you know where he was in 1870. My main hope is that I can connect my James Bennett to the rest of the Bennetts as well. I think I have seen somewhere that you are also connected to the Bennetts If I haven't mudddied the waters too much I hope you might be able to help me. I think I noticed in the past that you are in New Jersey. So am I and it isn't easy learning what I need up here. I'm a Florida Cracker whose descendants were in Georgia before Florida. Thanks in advance for any info you might have. Researching ALBRITTON, ALTMAN, BENNETT, CONE, GAY, GILL, GRIFFIN, SHEPPARD, STRICKLAND AND WHIDDEN. Doris Albritton Smith BTW I think the name James Bennett must be nearly as popular as John Smith
Doris, I have Bennetts. I have a double line to them. They also married into the Lightsey family which is connected to my Boatright line (Paternal Grandmother - Martha Boatright Carter). Anyway, here's what I have if it can be of help. The oldest in my chart is Benjamin (?); then Richard (R.S.)(Abt. 1756-1830) m. Mary Pollie Cook; then Henry(Abt 1789-1835) m. Margaret Sheffield; then James S. Bennett (8/25/1817- 8/23/1903). The other line is Benjamin(?); Richard(See above); William (Abt. 1786) m. Nancy Ursery; Richard A.(1803-1865) m. Lavinia Newmans; Elizabeth Ann Bennett. James S. Bennett married Elizabeth Ann Bennett(12/16/1823 - 9/11/1885). They were cousins. They had Mary Ann Bennett who married George Washington Carter - my GGGrandfather. They are all found in the Pioneers of Wiregrass Ga Volumes as follows: Richard (R.S.) is found in Vols. I, III, IV, VII, VIII. Henry is found in Vols. III, IV, V William is found in Vol. I (under sketch on Richard, R.S.) and III (under sketch on Richard A.) James S. found in Vol. VI I am on-line as CARTER-BOWEN GENEALOGY in Ancestry.com. Check it out. Pat
