Barnes Dies; Funeral Set Here Tomorrow Mrs. Joseph McMiller Barnes Sr., 80, well-known Waycrossan, died early this morning at Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness. Mrs. Barnes was the mother of J. Mack Barnes, prominent local attorney, and she had made her home with Mr. and Mrs. Barnes at 1420 St. Mary’s Dr., for the past 10 years. The former Elizabeth (Elsie) Haskins Madden Love, Mrs. Barnes was the daughter of a Church of England clergyman, the Rev. George Love, of Liverpool, England, who was sent to Beaverton Ontario, Canada, as rector. Her mother was an American, the former Emma Valeria Pintard Bicknell of New Albany, Ind. Mrs. Barnes was born in Indiana Aug. 24, 1882. Following the death of her father in Canada, Mrs. Barnes at three moved to New Albany, Ind. where she made her home with Judge and Mrs. George Augustus Bicknell. Judge Bicknell was congressman from Indiana. Mrs. Barnes was of distinguished Revolutionary ancestry. Her forbears at one time owned Valley Forge. Upon the death of Mrs. Barnes’ grandfather Bicknell, in 1891 at the age of nine she moved to Waycross to make her home with her uncle, the Rev. Jesse R. Bicknell, who was rector of Grace Episcopal Church here. In 1904 she was married in Atlanta to Joseph McMiller Barnes. They moved to Charlotte, N.C. where he was engaged in business. He was also mayor Charlotte. The Barnes moved to Waycross in 1918, and upon the death of her husband, who was also a brother of Mrs. J. M. Fesperman, Mrs. Barnes made her home with the late Mr. and Mrs. George W. Barnes, Atlantic Coast Line engineer. Active in the First Presbyterian Church here of which she was a member, she held membership in the Winifred Quarterman Sunday School Class and the Women of the Church. Mrs. Barnes, in addition to her son with whom she made her home, had a son, George Barnes, who died in 1942. Survivors include two grandchildren, Mrs. William B. 3. Hi Sue, Yes I remember you grew up there and I thought you might have already heard about this. No lives lost, thank God for that..........just a few minor injuries, but 8 houses completely destroyed, another 35-45 houses damaged,,,,,,,the path of this tornado (which the experts are calling an F1 which is minimal) followed along 82 E from just before the Big Creek Bridge did some damage on Prescott Rd, which is where Owen lived, back along 82E, then went inward about Burton Blvd, which is the road where the Stevens orchards are close to (1st road coming out of Hoboken toward Waycross on the right) and followed a path to Hwy 121 doing a lot of damage in its way............it was awful, but again to lives lost and that was a blessing. Email me off list and I will be happy to answer anything more that I know, ok. Take care. Sheila Sue and Richard Marsh <acr00119@mindspring.com> wrote: Sheila, I had not heard of the tornado. Were there any lives lost? Surely hope not. Tell me about the damages, since I grew up there am interested in hearing about it. Thanks, Sue. 3. Hi Gail, How are you and your husband doing now..........I hope better. As far as I can tell all kin are ok.......... Hoboken is west of Nahunta, going toward Waycross....it was considered an F1 tornado (minimal) by the 'experts', but with winds of over 70 mph + and the damage that it did to so many houses in such a small area so to speak was absolutely horrible.........8 houses completed destroyed,,,,,,,,,,35-45 houses damaged......but thank God no major injuries or no deaths........Uncle Ellis that would be who Marty calls Uncle Spec?? If yes he lived on Riverside Rock Rd and no there was no damage in his area or our area, other that way too much rain....
