    3. Starting with Reid have you ordered his death certificate, Social Security Card? Do you know when and where they got married--if so order the wedding certificate. Anyone of those document will provide you a bounty of information including the maiden name of the mother. It is a great start to many directions. > I am looking for any information on my grandfather, Reid Cavender. He was born June 16, 1896 in North Carolina and died November, 1977 in South Carolina. I know that his mother's name was Emma and he married Hattie Mae Harkins. Any information you can provide will be greatly appreciated!

    1. [GAWARE] John Folks DOTSON
    2. shadri
    3. Good Morning GAWARE, I received an e-mail from someone who is having a terrible time finding a grandfather's birth information. They are looking for the name John Folks DOTSON who was supposedly born in Ware County. Going by the son's birthdate of 1925 our researcher has estimated that the grandfather would have been born possibly between 1890-1910. The Georgia Dep of Vital Records wasn't a help, says this frustrated soul, as the records weren't kept prior to 1919. Do any of you know how this fellow genealogist might find some help? Better yet, maybe some of you even connect to this line somehow? If you have anything to offer, I will gladly forward it on to the DOTSON researcher. Thanks List! Sharon

    1. [GAWARE] Homerville, Georgia Company 1413
    2. shadri
    3. Good 'COLD' January afternoon Listmembers, Like our friend Joy, I Enjoyed reading about Linda Clark's snow! I have only seen light snow living here in North Florida my whole life. I found the following in my data files. Are any of you connected to any of the names listed below? If so, PLEASE copy and paste the name(s) to a new e-mail and add what you are willing to share for the individual(s). We might be able to take this and build something real nice from it. Fun huh? We will post it to our GenWeb site for Ware County. Sharon =============================================== Homerville, Georgia Georgia P-52 History of the CCC CAMP Company 1413 On June 2, 1933, Company 1413 came into existence. Prior to or sometime during the month of May of that year, a group of men connected with the Army, together with others who were connected with the Forestry branch, arrived in Homerville to ascertain whether or not a Civilian Conservation Corps (C.C.C.) campsite should be located there. Their verdict proved to be in the affirmative, so on May 25, Captain Patten, an officer of the Army arrived at Homerville, with fourteen members of the C.C.C. from Jacksonville, Florida, and erected a tent on the present campsite. On June 2, two hundred enrollees under the command of Captain Earle A. Johnson, 29th Infantry, arrived at the location and by sundown all tents were up and the cots installed, and Company 1413 was off to a "flying start." This company has remained at its original location, within a stones throw of the town of Homerville, during its entire existence. Members of the company have made commendable accomplishment in the performance of the various work projects under supervision of the Forestry officials. Among the projects undertaken are: bridge construction, development of truck trails, and fire breaks, reforestation, fire tower erection, telephone line construction, and maintenance, and numerous other worthwhile endeavors. In the field of sports, Company 1413 has made an enviable record, having won the championship in basketball, baseball, and football in this district in 1935, as well as third place in basketball in 1936. A program of intra-camp sports serves to interest those members who do not take part in inter-camp activities. Access to an excellent swimming pool, tennis courts, etc., tend toward the maintenance of high morale of the men. The educational program is one of comprehensive scope, with special emphasis being placed on vocational courses. During the past year it has grown to such an extent that three buildings are necessary to accommodate all the classes. There are now two W.P.A. instructors, in addition to ten others offering instruction in academic, commercial and vocational subjects to over 90 per cent of the enrollees. Present plans call for an additional building to house an enlarged reading room and library. Hundreds of free books have been secured through the efforts of the present commanding officer, Captain J.D. Giddens, and the Adviser H.E. Knight. The camp newspaper, the Palmetto Post, is considered one of the best in this district. The relationship between the men of the company, and the citizens of this community has been of the highest type. The co-operation between the two groups has proved mutually helpful, affording the members of this company advantages seldom enjoyed by those located in camps remote from such communities. Since it was organized, this company has been under the command of the following officers: Captain Earle A. Johnson, 29th Infantry; Captain Hugh B. Dudley, 328th Infantry; First Lieutenant Clarence S. Miller, Captain Harvey L. Burnette, 327th Infantry; First Lieutenant W.S. Heron, Captain Jerome D. Giddens, 325th Infantry. On March 1, Lieutenant Edward S. Moale, E-V, (S), USNR, relieved Captain Giddens as Commanding Officer. His assistants when this was written were: First Lieutenant Joseph T. Hall, Jr., Exchange Officer and First Lieutenant Abraham H. Center, Surgeon. Company 1413 Georgia P-52 Homerville, Georgia Roster Technical Personnel: ----------------------- Sam J. This person has sent me the same thing and they want you to go and buy there product to prevent this. The SPAM isnt sent to people that visit the site and mainly the SPAM is sent to the maintainer of the site or anyone who has there email address on the website. JUST DIDNT WANT ANYONE TO MISUNERSTAND WHAT WAS GOING ON. Again continue to visit the website http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/ware.htm there is no danger in you getting spam from visiting. This is a HOAX and I hope i have cleared this up so that Linda and all dont misunderstand. The website above contains some great FREE information Thanks Scott Warren -----Original Message----- From: dcclark [mailto:dcclark@bellsouth.net] Sent: Thursday, January 03, 2002 12:10 PM To: GAWARE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [GAWARE] WARE CO GEN WEB Hi ALL, I have received notification that SPAM robots are harvesting e-mail address from the following website http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/ware.htm so that SPAM can be sent to all who access this website. I just found in an old Suwannee Valley Gen. Soc. quaterly, a list of Georgia Courthouses destroyed by cyclone, floods, tornadoes & storms. Ware County, is listed as being destroyed by FIRE in 1854. 1. [GAWARE] My Paternal Line
    2. J Salis
    3. My paternal line has nothing to do with Ware Co, but thought I'd post it anyway, just in case any of you folks have connections with the same line. CLARK- found in Sumter Co, Ga. & Columbia Co, Fl. I have a Seaborn Clark married to a Lovina Clark. Seaborn, born 1828/ Lovina, born 1831(I was told that Lovina's maiden name was Clark also. Gee... I hope that there is a fork in this line.) MOORE- Hillsborough Co, Fl. & Duval Co, Fl. My father cannot tell me much about the Moore name. His mothers maiden name was Moore, born in Tampa, 1914. SALIS/SILAS- From Duval Co, Fl. My maiden name is Salis. I learned recently that the surname was changed from SILAS to SALIS. I don't think it was originally SILAS. It could have been SALES/SALLAS/SALAS/de SALAS/von SALAS. O'STEEN- maybe born in Jacksonville, haven't found anything to verify this. Nancy "Annie" O'Steen. 1. [GAWARE] Burned County research
    2. Crilley
    3. Although this note was specifically written about Burke County.....because it is about "burned County research".... I thought it might be helpful to people trying to locate records for Ware. AND if someone could share something more specific about WARE County....then we could update this....and make it even more helpful. =========================== File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Doug Bell from state and federal sources. I would recommend using the 1820 forward federal censuses. Note everyone by your surname who appears on any census as well as the neighbors about 10 houses in each direction. With luck you can locate where a group of families moved in from unless the family is an early arrival. The TELAMON CUYLER COLLECTION University of Georgia Athens has documents relating to Burke county in a private manuscript collection. ***Could someone check and see if they have any records on WARE County as well?*** BURKE COUNTY FOLKS 1882-1900 This has newspaper abstracts on Burke county families. Why would a newspaper in the 1880s help with an old family? Recollections of the oldest settlers were published in the 1870s and 1880s as nostalgia articles that contain lots of pre courthouse fire information. This also is the case for Washington and Wilkinson counties. Georgia is doing a good job of publishing newspapers. Check the land lotteries for Georgia to see if your Burke county family moved. The census can help with this as well. Sometimes a family relative will move to a county that hasn't suffered multiple courthouse fires like Burke. It may not be your direct line but they can provide clues. Burke county land was distributed by British crown grants in St. George Parish and by Georgia state headrights. Lists of these have been published. Someone in Atlanta needs to get the metes and bounds descriptions of all the land granted in Burke so they can be plotted on a modern map. This would allow a partial atlas of landowners to replace the lost deed books. The archives charges too much for us out of state folks to work on this. If you have an early Burke county before 1800 check also in Screven formed 1793 and Jefferson formed 1796. These counties were formed from Burke and still have their records. Court clerks can help you get married, probate a will, or record your property but they have virtually no experience in genealogy or history. Some will also tell you the courthouse burned to get rid of you. . The deeds before 1854 burned in the fire. You still can get marriage records, probate records and court records back to 1820. There are censuses from 1820 forward and land lottery records. I believe 1805 covered Wilkinson county. You should also look for published newspapers and church records. Don't overlook the 1850 - 1880 federal census agricultural schedule and the 1850 - 1860 slaveowners schedule of the census. These tell you a lot of information about a family's land and slave ownership and farming activities found nowhere else. Burned counties aren't hopeless but they cost you a lot of money and time to trace a family there. You have to collect EVERY mention of the family along with relatives and neighbors. 1. [GAWARE] Update Our List Status ~ 01-03-02

    3. Dear GAWARE Friends and Cousins, In a continued effort to encourage you to take advantage of this great opportunity we have through RootsWeb to place queries; and very often make discoveries I want to give you an update on our list status. As I told you the other day, we lost a few members due to the heavy activity of the *vie ruh sez* and *wurmz* However, we have even had some new subscribers join us, since that time. We currently have 120 subscribers to the GAWARE List. It has been higher and at times it has been lower too. Sounds like an old song..."sometimes we up and sometimes we down?" We always have new people 'trying out the list,' so to speak. So it is a very good thing, to repost your queries from time to time. We have been blessed that many of those who check out this group, choose to stay. If we all work together, as we always have in the past, GAWARE can continue. It CAN be an effective research tool, and hopefully we can have some fun and meet some cousins and make some friends as we work together. Each subscriber to this list is a vital part. This list, as a matter of fact, is only as active as the members. So, when you wonder why nothing from GAWARE, stop and ask how long has it been since YOU posted your query, or shared something with the rest of us. You are the list. Christopher mentioned that he missed many of the old list members. I do too. If you have correspondence with them, tell them they are missed. They are welcome to join us and participate in the love of genealogy and history of Ware County areas. Sharon Driver Wright shadri@perry.gulfnet.com
