Here's some clues to naming patterns in some of our early ancestors.... they don't always prove correct...but many times are. ======================= But our Ancestors followed a naming pattern. Keeping this in mind can perhaps help solve some problems in research. NAMING PATTERN: 1st son = Named after the father's father 2nd son = Names after the mother's father 3rd son = Named after the father 4th son = Named after the father's oldest brother 5th son = Named after the father's second oldest brother 1st dau = Named after the mother's mother 2nd dau = Named after the father's mother 3rd dau = Named after the mother 4th dau = Named after the mother's oldest sister 5th dau = Named after the mother's second oldest sister ALSO: The Mother's Maiden name was used as a second name, probably the second son. The Surnames of Close Friends or In-Laws were often used as well. If a child died, the next child born after the death could possibly receive the name of the deceased child. A baby could also be given the name of a recently deceased relative or friend. As with anything there are exceptions to the above list. Religion or nationality can affect the choice of names. Hi Sharon, I answered privately to give you my snail address but wanted to send a note to the list as well to publicly 'thank you' again for this information :-) I anxiously await the copy of the photo and will be sure to let everyone know if indeed my grandaddy is in the photo. Whether he is or not, it will be wonderful to have a representative of an era in his life. My grandparents (Ivey Lanier Evans and Alma Inez Williams) were married in Clinch County in 1925 and immediately left for N.C.; Grandaddy had gotten a job with Duke Power. I have a photo from the late 1920's of him and the 'crew' he worked with; it's an awsome photo because he has on his spurs for climbing the power poles :-) He's such a handsome young man! While in N.C., their first two children were born. This would have been my aunt (Nora Jean Evans) and my dad (Richard Lanier Evans). The family moved back to Homerville by 1932 and their third child was born (my aunt Martha Evans) in 1933. My grandparents remained in Homerville until their deaths in 1981. Their daughter, Nora Evans Doane, passed away in Dec. 1982; Daddy in 1995. Aunt Martha is still very much alive and lives here in Valdosta :-) I've tried to call her several times this morning/afternoon but she must be out shopping :-) I can't wait to read her the information you've shared. My great grandparents were Benjamin Franklin Evans, Sr (of Argyle) and Margaret Lane (of Manor, Ware Co). Her parents were Thomas Lane and Hannah Thomas of Ware County. Again, thank you so much for this information :-) Regards, Nancy E Parr At 08:21 AM 1/5/02 -0500, you wrote: >Hi Nancy, > >So good to hear from you. Hi Nancy, So good to hear from you. My heart aches to think of the pain your family must feel during the 'holiday' season with so great a loss to remember. Many of us feel pain during this time of the year due to the missing faces and lack of presence of beautiful souls in our lives. You are so right about the comfort of seeing them again one day! I used to type articles for Linda Angell from time to time, for the Hoot Owl Express. This article on the CCC Camp 1413 was such an item. It was probably close to two years ago? I tell you time slips away anymore. ;-) Anyway, it was never used in the 'HOE,' it seemed a shame to let all this good data just sit. I 'happened' to come across it the other day; and thought I'd share it. Maybe it was 'meant' just for you. It is so special when we get those heavenly hugs. These articles she would send were usually clippings from newspapers, I would type, then mail them back, as she wanted to keep them for the library. This particular one was a copy from a newspaper or book possibly. I did some digging after finding your message because I thought I remembered making another copy to try and make it clearer. I DID find it and would you believe that there is a photo of the men!? One on the front row is holding a puppy of some kind. It is a printed pix from a copier so not the clearest thing to view. But, you can see some features at least. I will go to the library as soon as I can and make you a copy. IF I could get a clear scan, I'd try that. If you will send me your mailing address to shadri@perry.gulfnet.com I will mail you the best copy I can get for you. As I look at this, I believe it may be from some old book. It is a legal page size. On the edges it has a triangle with "US CCC" and pages 38-39. Hope you had a very Happy Birthday. The big 5-0, a milestone year 'they' say. ;-) Sharon >Hi Sharon, May I ask how you came to have this data? And what the 'source' is for the information? I ask because my grandfather, Ivy L Evans, is listed :-) Imagine to my sheer delight to open up this email and see his name in print :-) Wednesday was my 50th birthday and this is such a wonderful 'gift'. THANK YOU. If you have this on hard copy, is there any way I could get a copy? Warm Regards, Nancy Evans Parr<
Olivia and Gail, I thought I remembered another Hickox. If I can find, will post later. There are no index or if there is one in these books, names are often missing. In one book the index is the same page copied more than once and then some pages missing. I was doing a lookup for someone the other day, and saw the HICKOX. Happy New Year GAWARE listers. I think I finally got my computer problems fixed. Glad to say no viruses were involved. My video card went out and the old drivers were fighting with the new ones. Can anyone tell me how to retrieve my old e-mail messages? I saved all the files on my disk before it was formatted. But I can't find the old e-mail files. And I don't know how to access them if I find them. Thanks Ray
Guess what I got a photo of My Grandmothers' Mother's, Father on my LEE side, I hope will keep you posted on how it comes out and will then tell you how I got it! Gail
Hello you two! It's me again, Gail Your long lost cuz. I want you to know that I have a new system ordered and in lay-a-way so I hope to not loose contact again for some time to come. What Hickox names did you find? I want to know about this one too. Gail
Hi Sharon, May I ask how you came to have this data? And what the 'source' is for the information? I ask because my grandfather, Ivy L Evans, is listed :-) Imagine to my sheer delight to open up this email and see his name in print :-) Wednesday was my 50th birthday and this is such a wonderful 'gift'. THANK YOU. Grandaddy passed away on Dec 13, 1981and has been on my mind so much these past few weeks. We lost my grandmother a mere 7 days later, Dec 21, 1981. We lost my dad on Dec 31, 1995 so the month of December is incredibly sad at times. I have to rejoice in the fact that I'll see them all one day again :-) Seeing grandaddy's name has brought tears to these eyes but I am sooooo very thankful to you for posting this information!!!!!!!!!!! I've heard several in the family speak of his involvement with the CCC camp but no one has ever really told the 'whole story' as I'd love to hear it. I'll be sure and call my aunt in the morning; she's the only one left living in the family and I know she'll love reading what you've sent to the list. Maybe it will spark some memory and she'll be able to tell me more. I'll be glad to share anything she tells me with you in the hopes it can add to your project. Thank you so much again. Oh yes. I'd love to have them. Maybe someday I'll get going and do a home page too. I'd love for you to see GranAnnie. She had never had her hair cut until she came up here in her late 80's. It had to be cut because she was pulling it out. It was really white. Beautiful. I got a picture of Silas C. Johns, my great grandfather, before Christmas. I know how thrilled you are. I was surprised. He was a really nice looking fellow too. Hi All, My Aunt Betty sent me a photo of my grandfather Shelton Robinson. He was born January 15, 1895. He died 2 years before I was born. For a LONG time I had never seen a photo of him. About a year ago, I guess, Aunt Betty sent me two photos of him. I so longed to have a pix of him in uniform. He was in WWI. This isn't the full uniform I'd hoped for, but I am thrilled to have it. If anyone is interested in seeing it click below. Boy, comparing the photos I have of his oldest son, my Uncle Dwight Robinson, he really favored his father. Especially those of him at the age when he [Uncle Dwight] was in the Army. I love staring at the faces of these old photos, looking at the surroundings, well, I am sure rambling on, so will hush. Here's the link: http://www.geocities.com/shezzybug/sheltonrobinson1917.html Shelton's father was John Jefferson ROBINSON who was born in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. My Robinson's ended up in Columbia and later Suwannee County, Florida. I do not know yet their migration trail. That is to say, I don't know if like all the other lines I am researching, they spent time in Georgia, or moved directly into Florida. I have Georgia births for some of the children of the other families, but my Robinsons on the Census' are all listed born in NC, up until the first one listed born in Florida. My great-grandfather John Jefferson ROBINSON was married to Mildred Melissa LAMB. The daughter of Wade Hampton LAMB and Martha Elizabeth CLARK. sharon
Someone shared this with me, and I wanted to pass it along.... ================ Our ancestors came to America not only to escape prosecution under the strict laws of their counties but to become prosperous. After all, this was the "Land of Milk and Honey." Land was representative of wealth. Land patents were one of the first sources of receiving land. These were deeds transferring land from the king or the president of the United States to an individual. During the Revolutionary War, the Continental Congress gave land bounties for land to soldiers who gave service against the king. A lot of this land was in the state of Georgia. As the United State grew, public lands became available. Excellent sites for learning more about land records can be found at: BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT, [you can even search for your ancestors land patents by entering your local postal code]; or type "LAND AND PROPERTY RESEARCH" into your search engine [GOOGLE is good]. The Georgia Department of Archives & History Web Site has a great explanation on the Georgia Land Lotteries. Family researchers often neglect land records. Yet, that missing ancestor may be proven by the use of a deed. A man would very often give deeds to his heirs stating "for love & affection, I hereby give to my son..." Sometimes a man would disperse his property through deeds rather than making a will. Deed records can even net a pre-nuptial agreement between a couple, making sure that her property remained hers after marriage. A quit-claim deed can list the married names of daughters. An ancestor that has the same name as another man in the county can be distinguished by his land descriptions. The deed book is a copy of an original document. The county clerk wrote all the information into the book. The signatures are copies. When "his mark" was recorded, it usually meant the mark of the individual, not that he was illiterate. In some cases the "marks" were recorded in the deed books. The mark distinguished the individual and he used it on his cattle, &c. Some devoted genealogists have abstracted county deeds and put them into publications. [Bless them]. I hope that the local library has purchased some of these book. I suggest that you make a recommendation for the future. For others, a trip to the LDS Church Library to view microfilm of county deed books is well worth the effort. The film copy can be printed. And please as an aide to your fellow researcher take the time to put it on the Archives Genealogy Web Site. So many people are confined to their home and using the USGenWeb as their "life-line."
