Anyone familiar with the Rev John Marshal family? I have just found an 1880 Census record for a Polly of the right age in the family of Rev John and Melvina Marshal. In this family are Samuel at 8, Margaret at 6, Monterey at 4, Jennie at 2, baby boy, possibly Wade, Lallie OVERBY at 26, Ernest at 3, Marvin at 2, and Polly at 7 months. My grandmother Ruby Iris LEE was born in Ware County in 1912 to Mary Malissa MARSHAL and Isham Marmaduke LEE. Isham was the son of Richard LEE and Elizabeth CASON. I have a lot more on the LEE-GRIFFIS-CASON side, but I cannot find anything about Mary Malissa MARSHAL. The story goes that Isham spirited her away from a home of some kind when she was about 14. Her death certificate does not give her parents names. If anyone has any info on the Marshal family or "homes" in the area, I would love to hear about it. According to her death certificate (Duval County,Fl) she was born Oct 8, 1879, died June 22, 1960 and was to be buried at New Hope Cemetery in Ware County. She and Isham were married in Ware County on Dec 24, 1894. Thanks, Cathy

The record indicates that Polly is a granddaughter, if I read it correctly. Also listed in this family are Samuel, Margaret, Monterey, Jennie, Wade?, Lallie Overby, Ernest and Marvin. I would greatly appreciate any information you might have about Mary Marshal's parents. You may email me at cfinnie@carolina.rr.com.
I am the great grandson of Margaret Thrift. Unfortunately there is lots of information about her descendents and lots of family pictures which are not included in Luther's Thrift. Maybe some day he will expand the book and these materials will be added. Interesting that Randal McDonald household is 3 houses down from Carr W Thrift's household. Still trying to find Unity's maiden name. Christopher Boyd

Chris , This is what I have on Matthew Strickland I'd send you a gedcom but this file is just to large it's 791 pages that is with out notes !!! Matthew Strickland, Sr Born abt 1628 Crosthwaite-cum-Lyth, England Died abt 1696 Isle of Wright Co, Englsid Provinve of Va. Married date and place unknown , England Wife Elizabeth ??? Born Bet 1640-1641 England Died abt 1691 Isle of Wright Co, English Province of Va. Childern are: Matthew Strickland Jr born abt 1659 John Strickland born abt 1661 Samuel Strickland born abt 1662 Joseph Strickland born abt 1663 William Strickland Sr. born abt 1665 THIS IS THE MATTHEW STRICKLAND SR. (c1628-c1696) WHO SETTLED IN ISLE OF WIGHT, ENGLISH PROVINCE OF VIRGINIA. Born about 1628 in Crosthwaite-cum-Lyth, England. Although unproven to date, he is probably a son of JACOB or JAMES STRICKLAND and his wife ??? (name unknown) of Crosthwaite-cum-Lyth, England (see notes below). Married circa 1659 to ELIZABETH ??? (nee: unknown), in England. Parents of wife are unknown. Died about 1696, in Isle of Wight Co., English Province of VA. Buried in place unknown, Isle of Wight Co., English Province of VA. SPECIAL NOTE: Birth, marriage, and death and dates/places vary by the many different researchers and descendants. Also note that his wife's surname is UNKNOWN (some say it's "LOREEN," but that's the other MATTHEW that married ELIZABETH LOREEN in England, and settled in Maryland). On 26 Sep 1678, this MATTHEW STRICKLAND (c1628-c1696) received a grant for 800 acres of land in the lower Parish of Isle of Wight Co., English Province of VA (see below). On 6 Nov 1682, this MATTHEW STRICKLAND (c1628c1696) leased (for 99 years) 102 acres of land in the lower Parish of Isle of Wight Co., English Province of VA., to THOMAS JONES (see below). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Circumstantial evidence indicates that this MATTHEW STRICKLAND [c1628-c1696] and his wife ELIZABETH ???, came to VA on the ship "HERON" in the year of 1679. Please note that the ship they traveled on was the "HERON," not the "GLOBE," and that the year was 1679 (see additional notes below). Moreover, if they arrived in America in 1679, then that means all of their children were born in ENGLAND. Moreover, there seems to have been great effort put forth by certain researchers to [erroneously] link this MATTHEW with the "blueblood" Stricklands of Sizergh Castle, Westmoreland, England. Unless someone in the family has definite proof, there is NO EVIDENCE to prove that this MATTHEW STRICKLAND Sr. [c1628-c1696], is linked to the Sizergh, Westmoreland, England Stricklands. REFERENCE: Internet Email from JIM STRICKLAND <jestrick@sccoast.net>, 10/15/1998, Subject: Two Matthew Stricklands: "There is some published research on our Strickland genealogy that does not provide sufficient evidence to support the claims made. Principally, the research that I include in this article is that of Worth S. Ray Research Collection, 975 DAR, Vol. 31, page l8. Quote, 'Matthew Strickland, Sr. who married Elizabeth Loreen, of Liverpool, England and came to Maryland in 1679 on the "HERRON." On August 4, 1699 his land was divided between his sons.' End of quote. First, I would like to say that the land division between sons of Mathew Strickland, referred to above, occurred in Isle of Wight County, VA., and is published by John Bennett Boddie in his book, SEVENTEENTH CENTURY ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY, VIRGINIA, and has the following paragraph taken from the County Deed Book I: 'Mathew Strickland and William Strickland, sons of Mathew Strickland, deceased, have made a division of their lands. Mathew gives his brother, Samuel Strickland, 150 acres and his brother, John Strickland, 150 acres, and to his brothers William and Joseph, 150 acres apiece, 4 August 1699. Barnaby Mackinney, Thomas Marks.' Secondly, upon examination of the document mentioned in the first paragraph of the article from the Worth S. Ray Collection, observe that only one person came on the "HERON" in 1678, that six persons came on the "HERON" in 1679, and two persons, namely a "MATTHEW STRICKLAND and ELIZABETH LOREEN," came on the "GLOBE" in the year of 1680. Please note that the ship the latter two STRICKLANDs came on was the "GLOBE" and not the "HERON" - - and that the year was 1680. Also note that this warrant granted to John Tanner, Merchant, four hundred and fifty acres of land to him for the importation of the named persons in the document. Consequently, these persons came under bond, or at the expense of someone else; namely, John Tanner. In a second document, which is found in the Calvert County, Maryland, Testamentary Proceedings, Vol. 16, pages 30 and 31, the following is recorded: Thomas Greenfield came into Court November 1691, Calvert County, Maryland, and requested Letters of Administration of goods and possessions of MATHEW STRICKLAND, late of CALVERT CO., [Maryland] deceased, who died intestate in 1691. Whereupon this Thomas Greenfield was directed to give an inventory accounting within three months. (Editor's Note: Photocopies of the original documents referred to in this article are in the Strickland Library Document File. They are negative photocopies, and will not reproduce clear enough to print in the quarterly. NJC) At this point I introduce evidence which I believe supports the theory that another MATHEW STRICKLAND, at an earlier date, 1678, was already on the scene in the Isle of Wight Co., VA.; and was involved in receiving a land grant of 902 acres of land for the transportation of 18 persons [date of this document is 26 September 1678, recorded in Patent Book No. 6, page 653.] Then again, this same MATHEW STRICKLAND received 1,803 acres of land for the transportation of 36 persons [Book No. 7, page 20, dated 20 April 1680]. I must acknowledge at this point that we have not determined how and precisely the date this Mathew Strickland came to this land. Here is a question I pose at this time, would a person place himself in bond to travel to this land during the Colonial Period when he had the means to pay for the transportation of 54 persons? This is what the Mathew Strickland did in the Isle of Wight County, Virginia. CONCLUSION: To summarize, based upon date and documentations currently available, one would have to conclude that the Matthew Strickland [d.c1691] of Calvert County, Maryland, whose possessions were inventoried by Thomas Greenfield, as directed by the November 1691 Court, died prior to this date. Also, I would point out that these are all the records on the Strickland Family that are located in the Hall Records, Annapolis, Maryland, according to the authorities there, and that these documents do not reveal any heirs of this Matthew Strickland [d.c1691]. It cannot be concluded that he did or did not have heirs. There is no document to indicate that he did or did not have wife or children. Many records were destroyed by fire in Calvert County, in 1882. It is my opinion that the Matthew Strickland [d. c1691] of Calvert County, Maryland, and the Mathew Strickland [d. c1696] of the Isle of Wight County, Virginia were different men. It is reported in GONE TO GEORGIA, by William C. Stewart, that Mathew Strickland Sr., Isle of Wight County, Virginia, died in 1696, which would have been five years after the death of the Maryland Matthew Strickland [who died 1691, Calvert Co., MD]. Now, to further muddle the situation, read some recently published data on our Stricklands of Virginia. BUCHANAN, VIRGINIA, GATEWAY TO THE SOUTHWEST by Harry Fulwiler, Jr., 1980, pages 835-839, herein partially quoted. 'William Strickland, an early settler of Botentourt, was probably descended from ROGER STRICKLAND and his wife, ELIZABETH LOREEN, of Moreland County, Westmoreland, England. The name was originally Stirkland; Stirks were later called Steers. Leaving a long settled place of residence, this couple left England in 1679, sailed to the Colonies on a ship called the"HERON" [he meant to write "GLOBE"]. Poor Elizabeth! How many Strickland husbands did she have?" From the above, it now appears that there were two Matthew Stricklands in the late 1600's in the American Colonies. One was in Calvert Co., Maryland and the other in the Isle of Wight Co., Virginia. a. The Matthew in Maryland is the one that came over in 1678 on a warrant to John Tanner. He died in 1691 in Maryland without any known heirs. b. The Matthew in the Isle of Wight, VA must have arrived on or before 1678 because he had a large land grant in 1678 in VA. He died around 1696. (RockyIII@aol.com, Rocky Strickland)" REFERENCE: Internet Email of 10/16/1998 from CARLA TATE: "The parish registers of Crosthwaite-cum-Lyth show two Matthew Stricklands born in the early 1600s. The first was born 1627/8, son of Jacob (possibly the same as James). The second was born 24 Jan 1640/1, son of Edward and Elizabeth (Basse) Strickland. Those are the facts. It is possible, but not known, that they include one or both of the two Matthews who went to America." REFERENCE: Internet Email of 2 May 1999 from Guy Strickland: Our best guess is that our Mathew Strickland is the Matthew born 1628, son of Jacob or James Strickland of Crosthwaite-cum-Lyth. We know that James was married 1637 and had children including Elizabeth 1640/1, presumably the Elizabeth of VA 1664/5. We have no knowledge of a previous marriage for James. Therefore, our Matthew and Elizabeth are either non-siblings or half-siblings. On the other hand, if they were not siblings, they were probably close relations of some order. They are also likely closely related to Matthew, son of Edward, born 1640 (my guess for this one is that he is the Matthew who went to MD) in C-L. Hi Listers, can anyone help with this? My grandmother Ruby Iris LEE was born in Ware County in 1912 to Mary Malissa MARSHALL and Isham Marmaduke LEE. Isham was the son of Richard LEE and Elizabeth CASON. I have a lot more on the LEE-GRIFFIS-CASON side, but I cannot find anything about Mary Malissa MARSHALL. The story goes that Isham spirited her away from a home of some kind when she was about 14. Her death certificate does not give her parents names. If anyone has any info on the Marshall family or "homes" in the area, I would love to hear about it. According to her death certificate (Duval County,Fl) she was born Oct 8, 1879, died June 22, 1960 and was to be buried at New Hope Cemetery in Ware County. She and Isham were married in Ware County on Dec 24, 1894. Thanks, Cathy
>sharon, thanks so much My solomons are here as well as adams and lotts Ludell< Ludell and All, Please feel free to share with us anything on any of your family that appears on this Census. I feel as tho I am getting to know the people who lived in Ware County by helping with this project. I feel just like growing up right here in Taylor County, Florida! MANY of the exact same names, including many of the same given names. It has been amazing. Then, we are just across the Georgia border. Thanks to Christi for help on the Ryals household. I was tickled to see my STARLINGs show up on Cathy's post pp 124A-B. Abraham STARLING was my ggg-grandfather. He married Mary E. LAMB in Madison County, Florida. They were living in Clinch County, Georgia on the 1860 Census, with my gg-grandmother Sarah Ann STARLING, listed then as 2 years old. Sarah Ann married Joseph W. EMERSON. She had two daughters. After the birth of my great-grandmother Sophia EMERSON, Sarah Ann died. My great-grandmother and her sister Lula were adopted by Abraham STARLING when my great-grandmother Sophia was eight days old. They were raised as STARLINGs, they married under the name of STARLING. Sharon shadri@perry.gulfnet.com
