>From Waycross Journal-Herald: Monday, Jan. 28, 2002: Mrs. Lois Carolyn Campbell Jacobs, 85 (1-26-2002) Hortense native (Music Funeral Home, Waycross) http://www.musicfuneralhome.com/obits.html Lois Carolyn Campbell Jacobs October 26, 1916 - January 26, 2002 Mrs. Lois Carolyn Campbell Jacobs, 85, died Saturday morning (Jan. 26, 2002) at her residence in Hoboken after an extended illness. She was a native of Hortense and a prominent member of Brantley County. Mrs. Jacobs was born Oct. 26, 1916, the youngest child of the late Alton and Lillie Davis Campbell of Brantley County. She attended elementary school in Hortense and graduated from Brantley County High School in 1936 and played on the basketball team during her high school years. She began teaching in 1936 after attending six weeks of summer school at Georgia Southern College. Her first job was at the Wainright School in its last years of existence. In addition to the Wainright school, she taught at Calvary, Woodard-Godwin, Grady Street in Pierce County, Manor in Ware County, and Hoboken in Brantley County. Her speciality was in elementary education. She married Olen Lee Jacobs on August 6, 1938. She continued her education at Georgia Southern College attending during the summers while raising a family of four children and continuing her teaching profession. She received her Bachelor's of Education degree in Early Childhood Education in 1966. The Depression, as for everyone else, brought hard times to Mrs. Jacobs. She provided her own transportation to school her senior year since there were no funds to run the buses. She received tickets and had to tell how many miles she was to travel each day in order to determine how much gas she could receive. Her pencils had to be scraped to the very bottom since another couldn't be purchased. Her first teaching salary was only $52.00 per month. Lois and Olen faired well through the years. They owned a service station in Hoboken for many years. The store was the last service station in Hoboken to have an ice house where ice was sold in blocks for ice boxes. They attended Hoboken Baptist Church and were members there as well as their children. Lois spent the last years of Olen's life taking care of him due to his extended illness. After his death, she continued to live in their home in Hoboken and attended church each week. She would spend the day visiting with neighbors and family and talking with them on the phone. Many hours were spent each night talking to her sister Daisy before Daisy passed on. Besides being a member of Hoboken Baptist Church, she was also a member of the T.E.L. Sunday School Class, National Retired Teachers, State Retired Teachers, Brantley County Retired Teachers, and the Brantley County Retired Persons. Mrs. Jacobs was prized for the attention she gave her students. She couldn't go anywhere without seeing a former student who would stop her to talk for a few minutes. Attending the Woodard-Godwin Reunion was one of the most treasured moments in her last year. Obtaining an education was always important to her and something she stressed constantly to her family. She cherished every moment she spent in the classroom knowing that she was making a difference in a child's life. Mrs. Jacobs was a well-beloved lady, full of dignity and grace, and never lacking love for anyone she met. In addition to her parents Alton and Lillie Campbell, and her stepmother, Lura Strickland Campbell, she is preceded in death by her husband, Olen Jacobs, son, Keny Jacobs, two sisters, Verdie Lank and Daisy Davison, two brothers, Raymond and Rayford Campbell, two step-brothers, Elton and Ellis Strickland, two step-sisters, Lois Drury and Mauise Carver, and her son-in-law, Ronald Baker. Survivors include two sons, Gary Wendall Jacobs (wife Freida) of Waycross and Rony Lee Jacobs (wife Lisa) of Alma; two daughters, Rita Elaine Baker (husband Ronald Baker, deceased) of Warner Robins and Gwen Carolyn Bohanon of Hoboken. She also has eight grandchildren, Jacob and Charity Baker, Daryl and Derek Jacobs, Laura Johns, Wendy and Cindy Jacobs, and Bridget Bohanon; two step-grandchildren, Doug and Lane Daily; a great grandchild, Dalton Johns; a special niece, Ruby Harris of Nahunta; and numerous other nieces and nephews. She also has one surviving stepbrother, Elmer Strickland (wife Florence) of Hortense. A funeral service will conducted 2 p.m Tuesday (Jan. 29, 2002) at Hoboken Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6 until 9 p.m. Monday at Music Funeral Home. The T.E.L. Answering for my part - At 08:34 AM 2/7/02 -0600, you wrote: >I just want to clarify my role with Ware County! > >First of all our GAGenWeb is set up by regions...and each one has a >Regional Coordinator to work closely with the County Coordinator (the one >that does the County page) > >The Regional Coordinator for Ware used to be Tim Stowell. As the duties of being the State Coordinator for Georgia and the Regional Coordinator for the region which included Ware County have become more than I can handle, I offered the GAGenWeb volunteers the opportunity to be the Regional Coordinator for this area. Richard Pettys who hosts Gilmer County took up that offer. Previous to that it was my role to assist coordinators and/or temporarily host county sites until a new host could be found. I want to take this opportunity to thank Scott Warren for doing the maintenance on the Ware County pages for the last couple of years. If I can be of service to you in your research elsewhere in Georgia and more particularly in Chatham or Coweta counties, please don't hesitate to ask. While I may not know the answer I'll certainly try to assist you in finding someone who will. Tim Stowell

WARE COUNTY PHOTOS: I was wondering if anyone might have a good shot of the Ware County Courthouse to put on the Ware County GenWeb page? You would receive full credit for your photo(s) of course. ANY photos from Ware County out there? Shots of the downtown area or historical locations? Old or new. I sure would be pleased, if you'd consider sending me a copy to put on the Ware County, Georgia GenWeb page. How about old postcards? That would be neat. Just a scanned copy, I am not asking you for your original postcard ;-) Some of the old postcards have some fantastic historical shots of areas. I've seen some from my local town here that are hard to believe it was the same place. There were huge trees up and down the streets. Not any more. I'm sure there are some out there somewhere from Ware County. Sharon
>Teresa wrote: The site is down right now, but should be back up in a few days. www.waycross-ware-chamber.org< Thank you Teresa! I wanted to see if they offer a packet or booklet that describes Ware County, and lists a little of its history [a welcome packet?]. If so, wanted to order one. Need to do some reading about the area and these publications by local Chambers are are usually very informative. Sharon
The site is down right now, but should be back up in a few days. www.waycross-ware-chamber.org shadri wrote: > Does anyone know if the Ware County Chamber of Commerce has a website? I just want to clarify my role with Ware County! First of all our GAGenWeb is set up by regions...and each one has a Regional Coordinator to work closely with the County Coordinator (the one that does the County page) The Regional Coordinator for Ware used to be Tim Stowell. Just a week ago, a new one was appointed Richard Pettys. As I mentioned yesterday, the sister page is GAGenWeb Archives. I am the State File Manager for GAGenWeb....and do the uploading for Ware County as well as many other counties within Georgia. Another point of clarification: Rootsweb is the business ISP that allowed the volunteer organization of USGenWeb to be on-line (both the County and the Archives) for free. USGenWeb has it's own advisory board....and every state has it's name... GAGenWeb or TXGenWeb, etc. Rootsweb is now a part of Ancestry.com. They are a business....but they are committed to the USGenWeb and providing us free space for our work. If at any time there was a disagreement about this, USGenWeb would move to another server. We, as volunteers, are totally committed to FREE sharing of information. NONE of the material you donate will ever be sold. I've probably told you more than you need to know....but just wanted to be clear that I am a VOLUNTEER for USGenWeb.... I have no affiliation with the business of Ancestry/Rootsweb. If you have any concerns or questions....let me know privately...

LOL Christopher, I loved Vincent Price. But I am going to ask Virginia to answer your question just to be sure that we get the right information. My understanding is that it is a Genweb site and not her personal site. Virginia is working for Rootsweb. Sharon, My ISP always does things like that in the middle of the night. Wonder why your's was down so long? List Members, If any of you have sent me e-mail in the past few days, please resend. My ISP installed a new mail server and I have had 'NO e-mail!' for two whole days. Serious withdrawals. Had to reconfigure my mail settings, but it seems like all is in order now. Anyway, I do offer my apology for any inconvenience, but it was beyond my control. Sharon
Let me try to help everyone to understand. (and please ask again if you don't understand or if I'm missing the question!) First of all, I don't have a personal web site about Ware county, as I don't research there. There are two web sites for Ware County connected to GAGenWeb (a part of USGenWeb) 1)http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/ware.htm This is the Ware County Archives page....and I am responsible for loading materials on-line there. If you take a second to go there, you'll see that we have added quite a number of things since people have started sending them to me. 2)http://www.rootsweb.com/~gaware/ This is the page for the Ware County page (both of these are part of GAGenWeb) This one is in html coding....and contains some of the same materials....but some other things as well. This page is the one where you'll see that there are family pages.... Look down the Left Hand side of the page.....County Websites Click on that one.....you'll see a listing of pages that people have sent to us that are connected with Ware County in some way. One of the big differences between the Archives page (data) and the County page is that the county page can have links of all kinds. The Archives page has no "outside" links. Everything in it is within the Archives Directory. This is why the Search Engine for all of Georgia works there.....all the County Archives Pages are connected in this way. BOTH of the above sites are GAGenWeb sites....both belonging to Ware County. Christopher....if I've not answered your questions, please do ask again. We want everyone to understand what is available and how to get to it. If you have a question about a specific page, include the URL, so I'll know exactly where you were looking.
