    1. Re: [GAWARE] Descendants of James Lee
    2. Gail Moore
    3. Hello: My name is Gail, I live in Florida my Lee line goes like this: Ernestine Johns living b. Hickox, GA 1934 daughter of Harley L. and Maybel Johns. Ernestine is my Mother. Maybel Johns never changed her surname, she was born a Johns and she married a Johns because we know now that Harley was her 4th cousin once removed. Maybel was the child of Martha Jane (Lee) and Albert Lewis Johns his first wife by whom he had two children. Martha Jane (Lee) Johns' photo hangs on my wall. She was the child of George Lewis Lee b. 2/7/1856 who married #1 Hollyann Thornton; #2. Frances Corbitt (Martha Lee's Mother); #3 Macie Knight; #4 Elizabeth Lee. As above Martha Jane Lee was born into the second marriage to Frances Corbitt. Geroge Lewis (I now have a Photo of him also) was the son of James Lee and Catherine Miller dau. of Ezekiel S. Miller.................... Now this gets really mixed up about here so follow close................... Maybel's Mother Martha Jane Lee above married to Albert Lewis Johns well she died young when Maybel was only 8 years old and Willey Stevens Johns was only 3. So G-Grandpa Albert Lewis Johns married his first wifes Fathers, Sisters daughter..........................which goes like this: George Lewis Lee who married Catherine Miller had a sister named Martha Lee as well as a daughter named Martha Jane Lee........this Martha Lee sister of George married Martin Nettles and they had a daughter Irene Alvira Nettles...........this was Albert Lewis Johns 2nd wife. So I go back to James Lee and Catherine Miller twice also!! Not to mention that James Lee and Catherine Miller's oldest child Nancy is the Nancy who married Daniel Lee buried out on Billy's Island!! So back to the Lee line, James Lee b. June 25, 1829 Appling Co. GA who d. Jan. 4, 1888 on Billy's Island, Okefenokee Swamp. was the son of George Lee b. 1801 GA d. 1882 Waycross, GA married to #1. Rebecca Griffis dau. of Samuel Griffis. (My Grandparents) #2. Mary Carter #3. Polly Stephens. Now James sister Ardella Lee b. May 21, 1848 married Moses Thrift.............. Anyway George Lee was the son of John Lee RS b. abt. 1755 in North Carolina, I now have a photo of his tombstone........he married Elizabeth Stephens. The part in Huxford about youngest child Mary Ann Lee is yet to be proven. BECAUSE.........................we don't know yet if Samuel Hickox found attending church in a primitive Baptist Church on the Old Prescott Plantation was the Father of this Unknown Hickox man or not yet. You see look back up at Maybel again my own Grandmother.............well see her Husband Harley L. Johns who I said was her fourth cousin once removed. Well Harley L. Johns was the son of Minnie Hickox and Dillie L. Johns. So I do Hickox also. Minnie Hickox was a daughter of Harley Jacob Hickox and Nancy Taylor Dowling Hickox. Taylor was Nancy's maiden name she had first married John D. Dowling and if you check Huxford for Jabeze? (not looking) Dowling and then look at his son John D. you will see Nancy Taylor listed as his wife. (I have a photo of Nancy and Harley J. also)..................... Anyway Harley Jacob Hickox goes back to David Hickox or "Yankee Dave" The founder of Hickox, GA. and his second wife Sarah Altman. His first wife was Elizabeth Knowles who he had married in Camden Co. GA she died trying to give birth to his twins, and she is buried in the unmarked grave on his other side with a twin in each arm. We now suspect that David was a son of one of the Hickox men of CT. (I also have a photo restored of David and Sarah) My Johns lines above go back and connect like this: Dillie L. Johns was the son of Bryant B. Johns and Haddie Floyd Bryant B. was the son of George Johns and Anna George Johns was the son of Jeremiah Johns the son of Jere Johns and Mary Ann McClelland...........and this confusess a lot of people as they just here Jere and Mary Ann and not the fact that this is Jeremiah their son not Jere the Father. Albert Lewis Johns goes back to George Washington Johns and Viney Crews. George Washington Johns was the son of Jere Johns and Mary Ann McClelland Johns. I have a copy of the old Deed of George Washington Johns father of Albert Lewis Johns ...............there is also a unrecorded unprobated will held by a family member in GA. Gail

I actually descend from both sides. James Lee was the brother of my 3rd great-grandfather, Richard Lee. Their parents were George Lee and Rebecca Griffis. Also, Catherine Millers father, Ezekiel Stafford Miller, is my 4th great-grandfather. I guess that makes Catherine my 3rd great-aunt twice.

I am related to this couple through their son, James Monroe 'Jim' Henderson (1854-1928) and his wife Nancy Ann Bennett (1860-1957) .....their daughter was Mattie Eleanor Henderson (1901-1996) who married James Walter Evans (1898-1931) who was a brother to my grandfather (Ivey L Evans). >> Martha Ann Miller was my great-great-grandmother who married George W. Thornton after the death of grandfather, Lewis Jarrell Henderson. (I have his dates in my files as 15 Apr 1828-25 Nov 1868.) With George she had two daughters: Amy Celestine Thornton (1 May 1874-28 Dec 1940) who married William Duncan James (1869-1935) I stood beside their graves last Saturday as my aunt, Lottie Boyd James, was buried. Laura Belle Thornton (25 Dec 1877-15 Mar 1923) who married James Franklin Lloyd (1859-1943) Lewis is buried in Mt. Pleasant P B cemetery in Waycross and George is buried at High Bluff P B cemetery beside his first wife. Martha is buried beside Catherine and James Lee in Mt. Olive P B cemetery on the Swamp Road out of Manor just down from Booth cemetery where Laura and James are buried. I have a copy of a picture of Amy and Duncan. Does anyone know if there is extant pictures of Martha Ann, Lewis, and Berrien Henderson? Thank you, Christopher
