    3. Christopher and Olivia, Thank you so much for correcting me on the position of husband's for Mattie Eleanor Henderson. Could you please tell me the date/place of her marriage to Mr. Underwood; obviously I have it incorrectly. Unfortunately, I didn't know my great uncle. I do have a few memories of Aunt Mattie Pat; like you Christopher, everyone on our side of the family also called her that :-) I do remember her sense of humor and always thought that her smile could light up a room. The information I have on her other husbands came from my aunt and I'm sure it was just a mistake on her part. If I have the info on her third husband wrong, please do correct it for me as well. I know how Christopher fits into the Henderson families, but am not familiar with you, Olivia. Would you mind sharing some with me please. 3. Joy, It does have something to do with Ware. Every cemetery is in danger of this problem. At least they took it rather than just trashing it. Somebody or bodies has practically destroyed one of our oldest cemeteries. Archibald Henderson, a famous North Carolinian, is buried there and his tomb is all but destroyed. Thank goodness there were a number of pictures of it and it is being replaced. It's one of those great big things. We have two very old cemeteries and they are named Old English and Old Luthern. Old Luthern is the one that got hit. 2. For what strange reason would someone steal a tombstone? I ran into my uncle Jerry as I was in Jacksonville yesterday, I asked questions about family history. He told me that my grandma Salis had a tombstone on her grave, but someone had took it. It wasn't old at all, she had died in 1980. My uncle feels it is because it was granite and someone wanted the granite. My grandfather Salis, buried next to her, still has his tombstone, he died in 1965. They want to put another marker there, but fear that the same thing would happen again. My question is, if there is a solution to this problem? Is there something that we could put out there with her name & dates without looking 'tacky'. It would be a shame to just leave the grave unmarked. I just found out that my great grandmother was buried there & what her name was also & my dads sister, they never had the money to put markers out there. They are all buried in Jacksonville. I appreciate any advice that someone could give & please forgive me for posting this to the list. I know that it has nothing to do with Ware County at all. Joy

    1. [GAWARE] Aunt Mattie Pat
    2. Mattie Eleanor Henderson's first husband, James Walter Evans (Uncle Walter) died of T B when he was 32 years old. The picture of him on my web site shows him to be a very handsome, large man. Aunt Mattie then married William Patrick Underwood. We called him Uncle Pat. Aunt Mattie from then on was called Mattie Pat. Granny Nan was sitting in Aunt Mattie's living room watching the news when Aunt Mattie came into the room from the bedroom in only her slip. Granny Nan told her to get back in the bedroom and put on her clothes, that the man on the t v was looking at Aunt Mattie. (I think of what little Granny must have thought as she sat there by herself watching this foreign invention in her daughter's house.) Aunt Mattie was always the life of any party. She had a loud laugh that could fill up a room with the cackle. She loved to hear jokes and she loved to tell them. She was a born story teller. My memory of her and Uncle Pat is one of how much fun the two of them had as man and wife with their sense of fun. Her child by Uncle Pat was raised along with the children by Uncle Walter. A special party was planned for her 95th birthday in Darien. She died six days before the celebration. She told a neighbor who was visiting to get her a glass of water. When the neighbor came into the living room she found Aunt Mattie had quietly gone to God. Aunt Mattie was a very special person to me. I am thankful to have had her in my life. Christopher Boyd

Benjamin Franklin Evans, Sr. was born on 7-15-1865 in Kelly, Bladen Co., N.C., a son of Benjamin Evans, Jr. ( 1816-1882). Benjamin Franklin Evans, Sr. left N.C. at the age of 17, following the 'turpentine trail' into southern Georgia. He met and then married Margaret Lane on 1-29-1885 in Ware Co., Ga. Margaret was a daughter of Thomas Lane (1824-1896) and Hannah Thomas (1830-1902) of Manor, Ware Co., Ga. Margaret was born on 3-3-1868 in Manor. After marrying, B.F. Evans Sr. and Margaret lived in Manor, then between Manor and Waycross at Wayhomer where they owned and operated a general store. They later moved to Argyle, Ga and remained there until their deaths. He died on 11-18-1947 and she died on 5-7-1952. They are buried at Antioch Methodist Church Cemetery located out from Argyle, Ga. B.F. Evans, Sr. was known in the community as 'Big Frank' and Margaret was called 'Mag' by many family members and friends. He stood over 6'4" and she was under 5'. He wore a 'handlebar' mustache and was quite a handsome man if I do say so myself :-) I have some wonderful pictures of the two of them and cherish these photos. They had 12 children, all of whom were born in Clinch Co., Ga.: 1-Winning Evans 1886-1917; never married. 2-Sarah Evans 1887-1919; married Elias Crews 3-Tommy Evans 1891-1895 4-Laura Elizabeth Evans 1892-1928; married James Benjamin Pridgen 5-Benjamin Franklin Evans, Jr. 1896-1970; married Caludie Bell Tyson 6-James Walter Evans 1898-1931; married Mattie Eleanor Henderson 7-Mattie Alice Evans 1899-1967; married A. J. Hardison 8-Fannie Evans 1900-1982; married Vernon B Hartness 9-Johnny Evans 1902-1944; married Jessie Rumley 10-Ivey Lanier Evans 1904-1982; married Alma Inez Williams 11-Buleah Evans 1905-1927; married Murry Spurlock 12-Penell Richard Evans 1906-1994; married Katherine Elizabeth Mullis Ivey Lanier Evans was my grandfather. His dates of birth/death are 2-21-1904/ 12-13-1982. He was married on 1-12-1925 in Clinch Co., Ga to Alma Inez Williams. Her dates of birth/death are 11-24-1908/ 12-21-1982. Grandaddy died in the hospital in Waycross and Granny died in Valdosta (Lowndes Co.). They are both buried in Pine Forest Cemetery in Homerville. Their children were (a) Nora Jean Evans (1925-1983); Richard Lanier Evans Sr. (1928-1995); and Martha Marie Evans (1932-still living). Richard Lanier Evans Sr. is my father. James Walter Evans' dates of birth/death are 10-16-1898/ 3-29-1931; he died in Waycross, Ware Co., Ga. Mattie Eleanor Henderson's dates of birth/death are 7-30-1901/ 7-24-1996; she was born in Manor, Ware Co., Ga and she died in Darien, Glynn Co., Ga. Both are buried at Shiloh Cemetery, Pierce Co., Ga. Mattie Eleanor Henderson was married three times. Her first husband was William Patrick Underwood (1893-1966); they were married on 1-25-1913 in Ware Co., Ga. I show they had one child. James Walter Evans was her second husband; they were married on 4-12-1919 in Ware Co., Ga. and they had 4 children. Many years later she married J. Crolus Paul. I don't have any further information on him. They were married on 4-8-1971 in Ware Co., Ga. If you need more information, I will be happy to share it with you. Regards, Nancy Evans Parr

    2. Just wanted to share some info with you all. For about two years I have been searching for information on my great-grandmother. She was married to Cyler (Cuyler) Sweat. I had been told by my relatives and others that her name was Eliza Lee, but then I found that her last name may have been Douglas. Well, today I got my answer. In the mail was Eliza's death certificate. When I ordered it it just stated her name as Mrs Cyler Sweat. Well her parents were Henry Douglas and Cinderella Lee. And would you know it, I already have their information in my files. It appears that Eliza is both my aunt and great-grandmother. I do believe that I am related to every Lee in southeast GA and it's one hugh circle Just thought I'd share. Christi Greene
