    1. [GAWARE] TWO OLD TALES From Christopher from the GAWARE Archives

    3. To Search the GAWARE Archives: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/usa/GA/ware.html ========================================== Date: Fri, 28 Jan 2000 16:52:41 EST From: <Wayxga@aol.com> Subject: [GAWARE] An Old Tale Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Growing up in the Village of Manor in Ware County, I was told this tale as a young boy. A man who lived on a farm out in the country on what is known as the Corbitt Road had done business in Waycross and had hitched a ride from there back to this road. It was nighttime and dark, and he began walking on this white sand road through the woods to his home. He had not gone far when he heard something scream, and it sounded like a woman. Suddenly, he was aware that some kind of large animal was behind him. He began to run and the animal followed. He knew he could not out run it, and he decided that he would take off articles of clothing and throw them down on the road as he ran. He hoped the animal would stop to sniff them, giving him a short distance between him and whatever it was. One by one he removed his clothes, and each time he would run further toward his home. This idea worked for he reached his front porch and beat on the locked front door, yelling for his wife to let him in. She was horrified to see him standing there completely nude. The next morning he retraced his steps and discovered each item of clothing along the road had been ripped to shreds. And around each of the torn clothes were huge catlike paw prints. This road is between Manor and Glenmore off Route 84. I always think of this story when I pass Corbitt Road. I don't remember who told me, possibly my Grandmother Sarah Ella White Boyd, but I do recall how scary I felt as a young lad when I first heard it. This is part of my heritage. Have any of you Listers ever heard this story or one similar to it before? Christopher ============================================== Date: Sat, 29 Jan 2000 10:12:56 EST From: <Wayxga@aol.com> Subject: [GAWARE] Another Old Tale This is another tale I heard as a young boy growing up in the village of Manor in Ware County, Georgia. There was a young man and woman who lived with their small son in a cabin on the edge of the swamp. One evening after supper the boy began to cry. Nothing the mother or father tried would cause the boy to stop. He cried incessantly in the cabin as the darkness and the quiet fell upon the family there alone in the woods. Finally, out of desperation, the mother threatened to take him outside and leave him on the front porch if he didn't stop his caterwauling. This only made him cry even more convulsively. Keeping her threat to their son, she opened the door and took the crying child by the hand and led him out to the porch. She told him to sit there in a chair until he stopped the racket. She went back inside the cabin, closing the door on the crying boy. She and her husband listened as he continued the noise out in the dark on the porch. Finally, his constant crying began to taper off and then there was complete silence. The mother went to the door and opened it; the chair where she had left her son was empty. He was not on the porch. She called to her husband, and they searched the front yard and the side yards and the back yard, all the time calling for their son. The next morning they looked everywhere around their cabin and their property, but their son was nowhere to be found. Did the boy's crying attract a wild animal in the swamp which took him away, or did some human being happen to pass by the lonely cabin that evening and come upon a crying boy sitting in a chair on the front porch, in the dark? What ever happened to him his parents never discovered. I was told this was a true story and that it happened on the edge of the Okefenokee Swamp. What is missing is of course the name of the family and the exact location of their cabin. Have any of you ever heard this story or a variation of it? Christopher ______________________________

    1. [GAWARE] GEORGIA STATE MILITIA ENROLLEMENT LISTS from the GAWARE Archives

    3. To Search the GAWARE Archives: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/usa/GA/ware.html ================================================ Date: Thu, 14 Jan 1999 10:43:47 -0800 From: Diana Sjoberg <sjoberg1@sprintmail.com> Subject: [GAWARE-L] [Fwd: [GA] GEORGIA STATE MILITIA ENROLLEMENT LISTS] Hello: I have seen several letters today from ladies looking for information on Georgia State Militia on the GA. LIST and I am sending this to the CSA History list also in the hopes of helping researchers. Some of these may be looking for MIlitia records of an earlier time than the WAr Between the States but I thought I would share this information below anyway. If you are looking for War Between The States Militia Enrollments you can find them in the Archives in Atlanta under microfilm rolls from every county by districts. These Microfilm records are called "THE ADJUTANT GENERAL'S MILITIA ENROLLMENT LISTS". These lists are invalubable to Confederate researchers and genealogists alike for they not only list the men who enrolled by districts in Dec. 1863 but they tell where they were born, their occupation, and their age in years and months. Many districts list even the county they were born in. These lists also tell if they were EXEMPT because of thier occupation such as Shoemake, Miller, Doctor, or it they were exempt because of disability. It also tells if they had a horse, gun, etc. So there is a great deal of knowledge to be obtained from these lists. After they were enrolled in these districts they were taken into State Troops, Cavalry units for young men and Old men alike, Old Men's Home Guard Units, etc. So there will be other information on them on the Consolidated Index for Confederate Soldiers. This will give you a starting place and confirm for you that THEY ARE VETERANS of this war. Georgia is one of the few states that reenacted the state Militia During the War Between the States. This was due to Gov. Brown's good insight to having troops to protect the homefront. One thing about these records also is the fact that the man is listed by districts and you can see exactly where he lived. Also the age of the man is given in Yrs. and months thus enabling you to pinpoint the month the man was born in and also the year. This being figured by the enrollements taking place between Dec. 14, 1863 and Jan. to March of 1864. HOpe this is a help to all researchers. Karen T. Ledford/Toccoa, Ga. Confederate Researcher

    3. To Search the GAWARE Archives: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/usa/GA/ware.html ================================================= Date: Tue, 11 May 1999 10:51:26 -0400 From: linda angell <angell@gate.net> Subject: [GAWARE-L] PLACES AND THINGS Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit GENEALOGY TODAY May, 1999 >From a program for the Oklahoma Genealogical Society, February 4, 1985, given by Mrs. Lois M. COPLE. WHAT TO DO WHEN THE COURTHOUSE HAS BURNED AND YOU ARE ALL OUT OF MARSHMELLOWS! 1. The courthouse may not have burned totally. Some records may have been saved because they were in an annex or wing that didn't burn. Don't always rely on what the 'Handy Book for Genealogist' or the court clerk says. 2. There may be/have been 2 courthouses in the same county. 3. The records may have been reconstructed or re-recorded, and remember that deeds sometimes are not recorded for years after the transfer. (Also check with county abstract offices). 4. Check neighboring counties for deeds, probate records and marriages. It may be necessary to go out a second or third county away for a marriage record. People who elope do not go to their own town courthouse for the license. 5. Check everything in the courthouse where the family went to and the county where they came from if the county is known. Many sold land to relatives before moving on. 6. Check the parent county/counties Land records and the State Land Records for those counties. In the case of territory claimed by two states, check both state records. If your problem is in the Fire Lands or a Military District, check the parent States records. 7. Check the progeny (those that were formed from your county) county/counties for Land records that may have been recorded at a much later date. FEDERAL RECORDS: 1. Census Records 2. Mortality schedules. 3. Military records and Pensions. 4. Federal Land Grants, Homestead States. 5. Immigration and Naturalization. 6. DECENNIAL Digest. This index covers the years 1658 to 1906 and is found in most law libraries. It indexes cases that went to appellate or higher courts. 7. Federal court records. (Remember that Federal records are records of the Revolution and records created since that time.) STATE RECORDS: 1. Census - State and Territorial. 2. Militia and Pension. 3. Birth and Death records. 4. Tax Records: Real, Personal and Poll. 5. Land Lotteries, Land Grants, Homesteads. TOWNSHIP OR TOWN RECORDS: Items vary according to the state. In Ohio I saw a list of men available and of the right age for Military duty from the late 1800's. Other states may have townships that function like a county or a city and have the equivalent records. CITY RECORDS: 1. Birth and Death records. 2. Marriage records. 3. Cemetery records. 4. Tax records. 5. City directories (more currently, phone books). HISTORICAL COLLECTIONS: 1. State Archives and Libraries. 2. County Historical Societies. 3. College Libraries. 4. Local Libraries. 5. Private Libraries (D.A.R., S.A.R., Railroad, etc.) In all of these libraries, be sure to check the versicle files.) PUBLISHED RECORDS: 1. County Histories. 2. Town and City Histories. 3. Genealogies. 4. Genealogical and Historical Society Quarterlies. 5. Newspapers. PRIVATE RECORDS: 1. Church records, Church Historical Libraries. 2. Funeral home records. 3. Cemetery records, Sextons Records, and transcripts of cemeteries made years ago. 4. School records, College or Grade. 5. Title and Abstract companies. 6. Private Land Co. such as the Holland Land Purchase in NY. HOME SOURCES: 1. Bible records. 2. Photo albums. 3. Baby books. 4. Insurance policies. 5. Family letters, diaries, ledgers. MISCELLANEOUS: 1. Lineage Societies. 2. Masonic Records. 3. Fraternal Records. BOTTOM LINE: Analyze your problem and decide: 1. What information you really NEED! 2. What types of documents may provide that information! 3. Then analyze the locality or localities where that proof may be found. ======================================================== TIPS: Researchers will find the 1820 and 1830 Wisconsin Territorial Census is included in the Michigan Census. The 1860 Oklahoma census is with Arkansas. The 1860 Missoula County, Montana census is with Spokane, Washington. The 1860 Wyoming and the rest of Montana census records are with Nebraska. The 1860 Nevada census is with Utah and the 1860 Colorado is with Kansas. =======================================================

Tax lists for various years for a few of the counties have been published in Some Early Tax Digests of Georgia, edited by Ruth Blair, 2 volumes. This publication can be used as a substitute for missing 1790-1820 population schedules. The only known schedules for the 1800 census are for Oglethorpe County, and have been published in 1800 Census of Oglethorpe County, Georgia by Mary B. Warren (Athens, Ga., 1965). 3. Hi Kenny, Joy is right on it about the Drydens being on Rootweb-World Connect. There is a lot of info on Enoch's father, Archibald and his grandfather, John Dryden. There are also bio's in Pioneer of Wiregrass Georgia if you have access to those volumes. I don't have anything on Enoch but if you need additional info on his ancestors, let me know. 3. http://www.rootsweb.com/~gaware/kith_and_kin.html List Members, I have put up an introductory page for the Kith and Kin of Ware County. I just used the first bio at the top of the page from our Ware Co Bios that have been stored there in the archives for us all, just to show an example of what we 'could' do here. I say sincerely, I am so grateful to Virginia Crilley and Scott Warren for the hard work in adding all this to the Ware GaGenWeb site, and to the archive files. Then, without YOU and your generosity they wouldn't have anything to add...you are all to be applauded. The one I used just happened to be a short one. That doesn't mean yours has to be. It was jus the one at the top. <G> A few ideas: This might be some cherished family story of a family member, a mystery, a crime, a heroic deed, a humorous story, anything that is of the Ware County people and customs, and doesn't endanger the living by too many recent facts, will be welcomed. Maybe you have thought of something that hasn't even crossed my mind yet. That is why it is a group project. The more the merrier. We may want to change the design as we go along...let me know your thoughts, it is 'for you,' after all, and sure, we always hope others will read of our ancestors and maybe even add to our knowledge of them. Sincerely, Sharon shadri@perry.gulfnet.com
