Today, mom and I visited the Museum of Southern History in Jacksonville, Florida. It was well worth the one dollar entrance charge. There is are scaled down replicas of the Battle of Antietam, the Battle of Shiloh and The Battle of Olustee. There are personal items of the men of service, including weapons, games they could carry with them, shaving and other grooming items. There was even a representation of "hard tack", a type of bread they ate in the field. Browned from age there is a blouse of a women who assisted a soldier off the field, causing her blouse to be stained by his blood. She cared for him and he asked if he could have the stained blouse as a souvenir. It's been passed down and is now part of the museum's collection. There is another woman's mourning clothes. Medical gear, an old union saddle, Navel items, instruments they played and more. They have a library of over 2500 books. And the two gentlemen there were more than friendly and very helpful. With about ten to twenty minutes of our arrival one of the gentleman had located two of my Confederate Veterans, verified that they applied for pentions and provided me with applications to send of for further details. Mom and I agreed that it was facinating and that we'll go back. If you'd like to go the address and phone number is: Museum of Southern History 4304 Herschel Street Jacksonville, FL 32210 (904)388-3574 They are open Tuesday thru Saturday 10am to 5pm -- Kati Smith kimis@bellsouth.net http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~elverspeak/
GAWARE Friends and Cousins, Do any of you have any tried and true ways of cleaning tombstones? If so, how about sharing them. I have heard of folks using cornmeal then rinsing well. Just read an article where a guy uses shaving cream! He says it has a very safe pH and suggests carrying a pump-up garden sprayer with you on genealogical trips to cemeteries. Another lady says she always keeps a sheet of styrofoam with her for rubbing the stones clean, and a soft cloth for wiping the styrofoam residue. What say YE? Sharon

Village of McDonald in Coffee Co., Ga In reading some recently available information on my McDonald Clan from Scotland I found that the village of McDonald in Coffee County, Ga. was named for one of my ancestors - WILLIAM ANGUS MCDONALD b. 1817 d.1896 Is anyone familiar with this village/town? Does it still exist? Any info will be much appreciated. Thanks a bunch, Judy Strickland LEE, CASON, MILLER, MCDONALD, SELLARS, BUCHANAN Just a short PS - I agree with many of the opinions I saw posted recently - this website has always been one made up of people who care about others on our list. If someone is sick, troubled, whatever, we have always been there to lift them up in prayer. Now this is NOT a "prayer chain" - but we do pass the word about those people who WANT us to do it, when they are ill or have serious problems. I wouldn't want to be a part of a site that didn't care about individual members. This was always Linds Angell's point of view - as long as we don't turn it into a prayer line and forget why we are here. I think we can maintain a balance which will be acceptable to all members. And we are certainly always free to communicate on a private level with one another.

S Thank you so much for looking it up for me, but none of them is the one I am looking for. It is sort of strange. William would have been about 52 then. He was married to Lydia Miller Sweat in 1878 in Ware Co and is believed to have died in 1881. According to a deed book in Ware Co, the homeplace of William Dryden was sold in 1882 by his widow and also in 1882 she was granted a years support from the deceased husbands estate for 1 year (Huxford). It would seem they would appear on the 1880 census somewhere. At the time they would have probably had at least 2 Sweat children living with them: Cuyler and Charity. Thanks again for the help....Christi
