Hi, Since we've only had 189 posts to the list this month you must be on multiple lists. Along with genealogy there will be a certain amount of chatter on a list of this kind, including some side tracking and thankyous. There is also the occasional message sent in error and the follow-up apology. I read the emails from this list most days. It is a low volume list and I'm happy with the current exchanges. If you feel you're getting too many emails maybe you'd like to try the digest mode where you get multiple posts in a single email. If so, let me know. Kati, I did not see the show. Not sure how I feel about people having social events in cemeteries. Don't know if they could do any more damage than the prison inmates do when mowing many cemeteries. Many old headstones have been broken by them. I was always taught to show respect to graves as well. My mother always told us to never step on a grave. She said it was disrespectful, and that many old graves could actually cave in. Sharon >Whether you saw it or not, what do you think? Kati Smith<
Well the bible says to rejoice at death and cry over a birth! Perhaps this is what they are trying to do. However I was raised up the same as you. Don't step on anyone's grave and behave yourself in the cemetery and don't run but walk as the dead are resting! Don't liter That type of thing Gail ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kati" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, October 30, 2005 12:32 PM Subject: [GAWARE] PBS show on Cemeteries > Hi Listers, > I don't know if anyone else saw the PBS show on cemeteries but I would be > interested in your views. > > Since I was old enough to remember, every year when we went to the family > reunion we would always go afterwards to visit my grandmother's grave > (daddy's mom). Keep me posted if you find proof of this. This is interesting to me as I do Green, Padget, Foreacre and Higginbothom for my Hubby. This goes back to his Mother's, Mother's, Mother! His Great Grandmother was a Green by marriage that is she was born Foreacre in North Florida! Gail, I wish I knew more about my BYRDs to be able to share. According to the various census from North Florida, A Seaborn J. Byrd shows up in Holmes County, FL 1850, then next census he is in Walton Co, FL, then next one he is in Holmes again. On each of these it says he was born in Alabama. I don't know WHERE in Alabama! A cousin told me at a funeral once that our Byrds were from Southeast Alabama, he didn't know exactly where either. On the 1880 Census there is an S.J. Hey Gail, Sorry to be so long answering you...just got back to my puter and found "BUNCHES" of emails to go through. This has been a busy group these last few days...LOL..and that is GREAT! I got my information from several sources: FamilySearch.org, Rootsweb, Hughes Family Tree and from my niece, Cathy Martin Finnie (she has done a good deal of Lee research). I have not been able to get 100% proof of this through marriage records yet. I would love to do that though. I appreciate all of the good information y'all have been posting lately. I have had a time keeping up with it all! Must be true about "slowing down as you get older" ....hahaha. Hi Listers, I don't know if anyone else saw the PBS show on cemeteries but I would be interested in your views. Since I was old enough to remember, every year when we went to the family reunion we would always go afterwards to visit my grandmother's grave (daddy's mom). My dad dearly loved his mom and this was his way of remaining close to her. Our visit was always ones of quiet reverence. As a result I've always been mindful of stepping on what I knew to be a gravesites. I was respectful and always a little in awe. On the PBS show they showed many different traditions and uses for cemeteries. People were giving tours and holding social events (music in the park or art in the park type events and even reinactments). I'd never really thought of cemeteries as a place for a social gathering except for funerals. And a couple of weeks ago I came back from London where we saw children running a playing among the gravestones. I missed the first part of the show but found it facinating. I'm sure they will run it again and I will try to catch it. Whether you saw it or not, what do you think? The G in Jeremiah G. Johns stands for Gordon! If that helps out any at all.................................. Sheila ask Margie about the Owen Johns who lived out towards Aunt Julie Batton and Uncle Arther's place who died with a brain tumor who was Margie's and Aunt Orene's age...................they went to school with him. It may answer some questions about some of this, Not real sure. Exactly, but still the same piece of dirt no matter how they want to list it.......................huh? To me it is BRANTLEY County no matter! And in theory that is correct as that is what it is NOW. But Marty is Correct. Where Uncle Vernon's home sits today It is now Brantley Co. before that, it was Wayne Co. before that it was Pierce Co. and before that it was Charleton Co. BECAUSE, Tramping around on that same dirt lived the Johns family for generations, they NEVER moved! But one census places them in one county and then the next census places them in the other county and the next one places them in yet another of the counties..................................................... Grannie born in 1903 was b. according to her birth records in Pierce Co. Grandpaddy lived across the creek over towards where Uncle Buck and Aunt Leo and Kat live or lived, and his says Pierce Co. and he was b. 1911 At that same time Martha Jane Lee died in what was at that time called Wayne Co. so the Creek would seem to also be a dividing line also used back then??? And when Haddie married Bryant that is recorded in Charleton Co. Haddie was Grandpaddies Grandma! But they were all there in a big clump mixed in among the Lee's and the rest of the connecting names! But everyone of these places pointed out to me, are now in BRANTLEY CO. TO me putting BRANTLEY Co. into FTM is much easier than listing all the Counties, and putting the other data into the NOTES field that does not always show up and we can block or allow it works much better! Besides FTM as a mind of it's own and tells you, when your wished data can't be entered in a field given. AS LONG as we know the "rest of the story" then we should be ok as long as it is saved somewhere in our files for folks later on down the line.............................................. My bet would be Charlton, seems like most stuff was through there at that time. More so than Wayne. Heck George Johns Deed mentions Wayne, Pierce, Charleton, Camden and a lot of other Counties for his land! Did I ever send you the transcribed copy of his deed Sheila? If not I can send that too ya and you can give Margie a copy for me. She is the one who gave me a copy of the Org. in the first place! Sure wish she would get a computer and go online, now that would be fun.......................... Help guys what Byrd family.....................ok here is what I ran into and don't know quite what to make of it.................................... My Cothran line....................hourse of a different color I know, you guys most of you have never heard me use that Surname before. It is my Grass Roots, the Surname that got me started in all of this years ago, it was my birth name! Ok, my Dad died when I was 3 so I wanted to know more about his family than what I had known about growing up as a kid so I jumped into genealogy......................................... I have an old bible record.....................goes way back, used it as a guide to get started. Found all of them, it took some doing but I did it with a ton of help from others. Ok now here's where the BYRD came in! An Uncle going back that it, he was my Fathers', Father's Father's brother! His name was Edward A. Cothran seen as Cothrun at times! His obit called him Judge Cothran, it aslo called him E.A. Cothrun. He died in Gadsden AL. while working as a type setter for the Gadsden Times Newspaper, which at the time was owned and operated by William Marion Meeks, who was the husband of Mary Jane Cothrun who happened to be E.A.'s niece! He visited back and forth from AL to Hamburg, AR to the county of Ashley. He went to visit his children there! They were both born in GA but I have no clue as to where???? He met and married Miss Mary Ann WHITE in old Benton Co. now Calhoun Co., AL Sept. 25, 1851.......................Mary Ann shows on the 1850 with her parents John H. White and Rachael. I can't find E. A. at all that year anywhere. I can't find them on the 1860 US census or index either one! But sometime between 1851 and 1870 he and Mary Ann White had two children that I now know of. William B. Cothran b. abt. 1855 GA d. Ashley Co. AR they called his Willy he took up trade of Carpenter. Neddie, Maddee Cothran b. abt. 1862 GA have no further info. on her at all............................ IN 1860 I did manage to find John H. White and Rachael and the same list of kids in Carter P.O. Hamburg, AR................................ I found them again on the 1870 same exact place but with the two mentioned above Cothran children, NOW you have to look close at the Old Census or you will miss the "C" in the Cothran surname. It is very faint but it is there! On the 1880 Maddee is still living with John and Rachael in the same place, but William is with a Price family down the road a bit and listed as William B. but the B is also very faint on the census! He is a boarder and working as a Carpenter which was his Grandfathers trade! I believe that Mary Ann White Cothran died some where in GA out from Atlanta and is buried there! With the children so young E.A. Cothran sent his two children to AR with Mary's parents to be brought up and taught a trade. And to give Meddie the benfit of having a female around! Next I find William B. Cothran buried in the Anitosh Cemetery there in Ashley Co. AR and in the upper right hand corner is the name BYRD No one seems to know why? Did he marry a BYRD? Or is this what the B stands for in his name? And if the B stands for BYRD in his name, where on earth did it come in at..........................was his Grandmother Rachael a BYRD? HELP???????? Also why was E.A. Cothrun called "Judge"? I did later see and had sent to me one of the many sips out of the Gadsden Times Newspaper.................................. I have a ton of them, anyway in this one it lists him as Judge Edward A. Cothrun.......................................... In a part of Atlanta GA I did find an Edward Cochran and his occupation was listed as Lawyer? NOW if I am not dead wrong, don't most Judges start out as Lawyers? Could this be him and they just missed him on the index? Help???????????????????????????
