Sharon, I do not know the source for the full name, sorry. But I would be happy to send you what information I have on this family if you would like. I've only ever seen "Obediah Osteen" Is this his full name? If so, do you know the source for it? Yes, this is the same family. Mary Ann "Pollie" Osteen is my great-great-great-grandmother. Sharon Sharon, Would that Mary O'Steen be Mary Ann "Pollie" O'Steen, daughter of William Edward Obediah O'Steen (1782-1816) and Sarah Unknown? I have a list of 5 O'Steen children for William and Sarah, including Mary. Just wondering. Do the rest of you find this term 'hard to hear'? "Illegitimate" I do. I typed it earlier in a 'legal' sense. I know it was a legal term, but it sounds somehow ugly when talking about another human being. Maybe I'm just a sentimental fool. <grins> How do y'all note the births of those who were born outside of marriage in your genealogy? ~~~~~~~~~ Sharon My G-grandfather was born to a woman that wasn't married. I grew up with my mother calling him a bastard. I like illegitimate better than bastard!! I realize bastard has a literal meaning, instead of only a curse word, but still, I find it insulting. It certainly isn't the child's fault for being born to an unmarried mother...... But to answer your question, when using my FTM software, I enter the names of both parents (if both are known), and in the marriage location area, I type in "Not Married". Sherry
WOW!!! Bill, I see where you would think Elizabeth is your Samuel's sister. Thank you for sharing this. I treasure having it. Thanks a million! I love reading those old wills even if they aren't connected to me. Here is a link to Wills of Alabama, I was looking for something on my BYRD line and came across this whole list of wills. http://www.accessgenealogy.com/wills/alabama.htm There is one written by a Seaborn Sutton that made me cry it was so pretty. I found this on a census yesterday under Type of Occupation Book Block and it was used on the MI census in the early 1900's if that makes a difference at all.
