The Historical Society of Walton County, the Matthew Talbot Nunnally Camp of The Sons of Confederate Veterans, and other volunteers are locating all presently-known cemeteries in Walton County. The project is to provide precise locations (using the best available maps plus GPS data) for inclusion on the Walton County Tax Maps to insure adequate protection in the future. We presently have reports of 350+ cemeteries, with about 150 confirmed to date. We expect it will take at least another year to complete the search, verify the data, and for the County to complete their recording. When collection of the data is complete and verified we will provide for the Internet, the three public libraries in Walton, and several national genealogy sites, a listing of the cemeteries with directions in simple English adequate (we expect) for a child to find each cemetery. Also, The East Georgia Genealogical Society (EGGS) has now begun to catalog the marked graves in all known Walton Cemeteries. Their goal is the publication of a book for historical and genealogical reference. The book will be to the same high standard and quality as the book recently published by EGGS on the Cemeteries of Barrow County, GA. The compilation of locations of Walton Cemeteries may be available on the Internet by the Summer of 2001. The EGGS book is expected to follow as soon thereafter as writing and editing can be completed. ----- Original Message ----- From: <ERSSvcs@aol.com> To: <GAWALTON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: 09 May, 2000 21:17 Subject: [GAWALTON] Cemeteries in Walton County > Does anyone know about the updated Cemetery Listing for Walton County.
