    3. Winder is in Barrow County, which was created in 1914 from portions of Jasper, Gwinnett and Walton. It was at one time known as Jug Tavern. AME is the acronym for African Methodist Episcopal Church and probably has to do with the fact that a few years before, and maybe 65-70 years after, The War Between The States the Methodist Church in the South was known as "The Methodist Episcopal Church South". (The break had to do with the Methodist Bishop of Georgia refusing to free a slave which his wife had inherited, and who did not herself seek her freedom.) It is my understanding that, after The War, the African American members declared their independence form the MEC(S). To the best of my knowledge they have not rejoined the Methodists in the South (at least those churches in Walton County continue to display AME signs). The Methodists here are once again (since around 1940) a part of general Methodism in the U. S., known as the United Methodist Episcopal Church. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bettie Wood" <nana321@txucom.net> To: <GAWALTON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: 03 April, 2000 15:53 Subject: [GAWALTON] AME?? > Ok, someone help me out! > I thought Winder was in Walton Co.
