Hi all, My apologies to "Gen-Kid", Jennifer--I somehow overlooked your surname, & am just now requesting a GenConnect board . I should hear something in a few days. I think the snowball that PA Walter "hit" me with still has me dazed!!! haha All the surnames, except some variations, & Jen's, now have a GenConnect query board. For those of you that are new, or don't know how to use these yet, follow these steps: 1) Go to your favorite site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~gawalton/ 2) Click on "Surnames Of Interest", 3) Click on your surname 4) Post your query 5) Go back to http://www.rootsweb.com/~gawalton/ 6) Clcik on the Query square (has a green puzzle piece in it) 7) Post your query there, too! 8) After completing your query under your surname, let me know. I'll put a green asterisk by your name (with email link--right side of screen), indicating that you have posted your query. The green asterisk by your surname indicate that there is a mail list for this surname. Just add -L-request@rootsweb.com to your surname, & type subscribe in the message body, & poof you're subscribed. I'm frazzled now, so off to bed I go! Love ya all--snow, no snow & all, Momma Walton <><
Hi all, Our next cemeteries are: Ammons Cemetery Annie Mary Cemetery Arnold's Chapel Cemetery Austin Cemetery All I have on them is their name. The directions ya'll are sending are fantastic! History, number of burials is great too! Is it ok to post the emails you've sent to me about the census, to the list? Please send me your oks or No ks. I have located a microfilm reader, which will probably be pretty reasonably priced--probably will find out otmorrow. Anyway, I need to know which census (moratlity & slave schedules, etc) anyone plans to do for our county, so there will be no duplicates bought. All my volunteers for transcribing a census--please check in with me. Are there any other records that can be transcribed? Poor Jennifer--no "white stuff" for her--Walter (in PA), have you got any extra? Ours is all gone! Lil Lindsey said the other day "Nana, I'm soooo sad!" I asked why? She said "All MY snow is melting!" Thank you all for the tremendous help & support you give so willingly! I thank God daily for such sweet "kids" & precious friends you all are. Love ya, Momma Walton <>< No matter the storm, when God is with you, there's a rainbow waiting!!
Allgood Cemetery - Located Just East of Walnut Grove off Hwy. 138. There are only six burials listed in the cemetery book In Remembrance. Last burial was in 1927. Alcovy Mountain Baptist Church - Located at the corner of H. D. Atha Road and the Monroe Jersey Road. There are quite a few burials in this cemetery. It is probably about 4-5 miles West of Monroe. Ida
Bettie & List Members: I am not familiar with either of the census providers that you listed but I have quite a few rolls of census microfilm for the counties that I am researching both in Georgia and SC. I have purchased all of mine from Census Microfilm Expeditors. The price is now $10.95 per roll and all of those that I have purchased have been as good or better than those I have used at the local library and at the Georgia Archives. I am in the process of typing up both the 1850 (I have already finished) and the 1860 Slave Schedules for Decatur Co., GA. The only information they contain are: Name of Slave Owner No. of Slaves Age of Slave Sex of Slave Color of Slave (either Black or Mulatto) Occasionally you will find a notation that a particular person is idiotic, blind, deaf & dumb but there are very few of those notations. There are no first names furnished for any of the slaves. The information may vary by state and county, I don't know but the above is all that is furnished on the Decatur Co., GA rolls. By the way, I purchased my Microfilm/Microfiche Reader about 5 years ago from a Used Office Equipment Store in Atlanta for $300. It works great sitting beside my computer where I can type from the screen. Ida
Hi again! This is all I have for these cmeteries 1) Alcovy Mountain Baptist Cemetery--a few burials--no directions, town, history 2) Allgood Cemetery--that's it! Anybody got anything to fill in these?
Has anyone used or seen mircrofilm from http://www.loring.allencc.com/ or www.heritagequest.com If so which do you like best, etc? I was thinking about getting my own microfilm reader, & all the films for years 1820, 1840, 1860-1920, & 1850 & 1860 Slave schedules. Does anyone know if there is useful info on the Slave schedules? I have volunteered for the 1840 census transcription, BUT don't know what I'm getting into?? Can someone fill us in on what is involved with transcribing a census? Do ya'll want to go ahead & be contributing towards the census images? More later, Momma Walton <>< Boo-whoo----the "white stuff" has melted! Actually I sent what we had left to PA Walter--he didn't have enough!!!

For those who would like to read about OLD Walton County - go to the Georgia page of USGENWEB (link below) and scroll down about l/3 of the page. There are links here to two sites - "Walton War" and "Walton County" - very interesting. http://www.rootsweb.com/~gagenweb/ Nancy Guest jguests@alltel.net
Dear Linda and Kids, Some information from "The Georgia Genealogist" on the Wafford Settlement - unfortunately I do not know which issue, but there must be an index. Nancy Guest jguest@alltel.net >From "County Records, Franklin County, Wofford Settlement" MILITIAMEN AND SETTLERS: The Story of Franklin County's Wofford Settlement "The trials and tribulations of frontier citizens was never more apparent than the saga of Georgia's Wofford Settlement, located on the boundary of Franklin County in the Cherokee Territory. William Wofford, from whom the settlement took its name, was born in Maryland in 1728, and in early life moved with his family to the Spartanburg area of South Carolina. During the Revolution many patriots from the region were forced to flee the Tories and took refuge in the upper Catawba River region of North Carollina. They erected a fort called Fort Charles. With the close of the Revolution, many moved across the Savannah River into the newly opened lands of Georgia. Here every man could receive a headright of 100 acres for himself and 50 acres for each member of his family or slave. Wofford joined this migration and came to Georgia. His first known land purchase was in Franklin County on 12-21-1792 when he bought a tract granted to Joseph Martin Russell on 3-17-1786 in the fork of Nancy Town Creek and Middle Fork of Broad River. To occupy and hold the land required fighting the Cherokee Indians, so probably their first act was the construction of a fort. This "station," as it was then called, is described by the state's Adjutant General in a tour of the frontier in 1793, at which time there were 4 or 5 families in residence. During the period following the Revolution, Georgia made numerous grants of land to both citizens on headright, and soldiers, in the region called Franklin County. Unfortunately for all concerned, some of these grants were "given" by the state for lands clearly located in Cherokee Indian territory. Thus settlers with bona fide state grants occupied and improved lands only to find when the federal government ran the boundary that these tracts belonged to the Cherokees. We see many of these men named in the militia lists and petition which follows, whose grants have been printed earlier under the names of Franklin County grantees. "An undated map drawn by William Wofford for the benefit of the Governor, George Mathews, shows the various major settlements along the frontier about 1795. We can pinpoint some of the locations on modern maps through the creek names. Also, Currahee Mountain, standing at Toccoa, Ga., is shows, and Col. Jones' Fort is on the site of Fort Lamar, Madison Co., Ga., and Blacks Fort just west of my home on the Jackson-Madison County line. Wofford included the presumed boundary of Franklin with the Cherokee Indians, and also the Franklin-Wilkes dividing line. Unless otherwise noted, all of the documents transcribed below are on file at the Georgia Department of Archives, Atlanta, GA 30334." This article is much longer, naming many of the settlers in the Wafford Settlement. I think I have copied enough to show that the Wafford Settlement was not within the boundaries of present-day Walton County, or even the original Walton --- perhaps "old Walton." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ -----Original Message----- From: Linda Laminack <gabby@etinternet.com> To: GAWALTON-L@rootsweb.com <GAWALTON-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Thursday, January 27, 2000 10:11 PM Subject: [GAWALTON] Wafford Settlement >Does anyone have any info on the Wafford Settlement? >My gr gr gr grandfather owned 250 acres of land in Walton Co & I wonder if >it wasn't in this area? >LindaJ > >
Valesca, Bold Springs is near the northern boundary of Walton while Social Circle is as the southern edge. I've not heard of Buzzard's Mountain, but will check the maps and let you know.
