Bettie: Being new to the list and watching this for a few days, I think I know what you are doing about the census, but, would you mind telling me how it is going to work???? Thanks, Thelma
To Linda J re: look-ups! Kept this e-mail to remind me to see if you'd check land grants of Walton for Hunt or Oliver..My Ezells & McKees got land in Ms but unsure where Hunt & Oliver were prior to 1920! Be great to pin down there whereabouts for earlier days... Thanks! Dorothy
All is well in Loganville and surrounding area. We had a good hard rain and a lot of thunder and lightening but nothing more. No damage from this storm. It seems most of the really bad weather was in SW Georgia. There was a tornado warning out for Forsyth Co. (North of Atlanta) and headed for Hall (Gainesville) but haven't heard that it touched down. Ida
The tornados passed well to the South of Monroe. We just had a good rain with thunder. Hi all, Today I received 45 more dollars. We now have a total of: $165 on hand, & at least $105 (still 5 unknown amounts coming too) 1860 is leading as the next one to put online. What I need to know is when we get a few of these iamges online, am I still going to recieve donations until they're all online?? I hope so! I also found out, yesterday, that we can put a $100 deposit down on any, & pay the rest when the images are scanned. Is this something we want to do? I can put deposits down on 2 different years, if ya'll want??? Let me know, ok? Another gorgeous day in Texas! Love, Momma Walton <>< O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteh in him. Psalm 34:8
Hi Momma Walton, I have attended several funerals in the past few years and I can say that respect for the dead is still alive in the South. I attended a funeral last year for the mother of a friend. She and her husband had owned and operated a grocery store in their small town for many years. The hearse had to pass the store, going from the Church to the cemetery. I was so impressed by the number of people along the sides of the streets that took a moment to show their respect. There were many ways of showing their respect. Yes, there were several cars pulled off the road waiting for the procession to pass. Some of the people got out of their cars. Some people took their caps or hats off, some bowed their heads and some just stood there, but most of them acknowledged the procession. Wouldn't it be wonderful if some of those greedy developers could just develop some of that respect for the dead instead of developing our cemeteries? Dot Sorrells Cox
Hi all, My target date to start the "Surname Project" is Mar 1st. This project involves our "Surnames of Interest" section on: http://www.rootsweb.com/~gawalton/ If your surname in Walton Co., GA is not entered there, please make sure it gets there! Just inform me what they are & I'll get them on. This is what I plan to do for this project: I'll pick surnames, at random, from the "Surnames Of Interest" board. When I post what surname we're covering, any of you that have info about that surname should send it to the list. Example: DOE is the surname I post. If I have a page that lists wills for Washington Co., AR, (or anywhere) & it lists other surnames of DOE, you could send that info to the list for all to see. If you want to restrict the search to GA, then that's fine. Many of us have pages we have copied from our libraries, & we may have more than just our surname on a page. What I would like to see, too, is each researcher for the name DOE (or whatever) put their info out there, too. I hope this makes sense to ya'll. If not, ask questions, & we can have them answered before we start. So--are there any questions about this project or the others going on (census, cemetery--I still need a few more directions)? Any suggestions to add to this? Have a great day! It's so gorgeous here today!! Isn't God good? Momma Walton <><
Hi all, I have received checks today, so we have a grand total of $120 collected. I still have 5 or 6 undetermined amounts coming, & pledges totalling $130. I can: 1) either go ahead & buy the 1830 & 1840 census, 2) buy the 1850 census 3) buy the 1860 census 4) wait until the rest above comes in & buy the 1870 or 1880 5) or wait until the rest of the above monies come in, & we get some more pledges/donations then buy 1900, 1910, or 1920 census. What is your heart's desire on this?? Much love today & everyday, Momma Walton <><
David, We use latitude and longitude to identify the burial sites with sufficient precision to be able to mark the locations on the tax maps. The locator sheet which is completed on each site also includes info as to how to find the site with sufficient detail to "enable a child to find it" which means road directions, miles etc. We also hope to put simple metal markers at each site with an ID number, and simple roadside markers with relevant ID numbers pointing to those many sites not located at roadside. The custom of pulling one's vehicle to the side to let a funeral procession pass (even in the opposite direction) is something I have only seen in the South. Since that is where I grew up, I took it for granted that this was always done everywhere. I learned different as I moved to other parts of the country. And when I again encountered it on a return visit, it came home to me that this practice is somewhat unique. All in all it is a wonderful custom, if not practical, for traffic reasons on narrow roads. I have even seen cars, not all but some, on Interstate I-85 in the Atlanta area pull to the shoulder while a funeral passes--and they have up to five lanes so it really isn't necessary. I always like to think that those who pull over on the Interstate are true Southerners with proper "raisin". To show respect for someone who has passed beyond this mortal earth, even a stranger, by pausing for a few moments in our often hurried journey to our personal ends, it seems to me is good for each of us. I vote for 1860. Walter Freeman Bettie Wood wrote: > Hi all, > After attending a funeral of a mother to a dear friend of mine today, I > got to thinking about funerals in other states. Hi all. I wanted to say that the long/lat are confusing even to me and I have experience using them and a GPS receiver. However the they give a reference point that will never change. The technology is awsome even without one that will plug into a laptop. Walton County is growing so fast that if the project gave directions they would be outdated in a few years I'm afraid. I have an Ala. county that is well survied that has directions like "the second dirt road to the right". Roads are being paved often and dirt roads come and go with logging. The directions are already outdated and would be again in a few years. The lat/long will never change however. My point is that the lat/long is harder to use but will be availble and relavent forever. David Dennis, Proud Rootsweb Donor

Hi all, After attending a funeral of a mother to a dear friend of mine today, I got to thinking about funerals in other states. In a funeral procession, do vehicles pull over to the side of the road to show respect in your state, or just in Texas? I have also seen folks remove thier caps/hats--just wondering. I have not recieved any money yet for the census, but figure it'll start coming in tomorrow. To date, I have $20 cash on hand, $210 is being sent, & 3 undetermined amounts $$$. Now, which census should I buy first? In my opinion (& you do NOT have to go along with me!!), I think every census year should have some kind of "representation". So far we have: 1820--images should be online in March 1830--transcriptions (by our "Gen-brother/son" ross JONES) have been done & are online. 1840--transcriptions are assigned to me 1850--assigned to Susan BLACK 1860--zip 1870--transcriptions by our "Gen-brother/son" Ray BEAM) 1880--no census, but we have a mortality schedule online by Bob TORBER 1890--all census & special schedules destroyed by fire 1900--nil 1910--nothing 1920--not a thing Here is the approximate cost per census image: 1830 - about 100 pages (about $75) 1840 - about 80 pages (about $60) 1850 - about 170 pages (about $128) 1860 - about 170 pages (about $128) 1870 - about 280 pages (about $210) 1880 - about 320 pages (about $240) 1900 - about 430 pages (about $325) 1910 - about 520 pages (about $390) 1920 - about 500 pages (about $375) http://www.skpub.com/genie/censuscd/ga.html for more information. I was informed that the images will not be indexed, but the transcriptions we have so far are, & I intend for the 1840 to be indexed. I thought we could have another "project" here, if you like. Some of us could take letters A & B, another could take C, another D&E, etc. & index these--if you have access to the materials??? Just an idea. I'll eventually get them done, but we could more folks involved??? I haven't talked with any possible donors yet, but intend to. Some of you have provided some terrific "leads". I hope none of you feel "obligated" to donate to this project. If you are broker than broke (& I KNOW a couple of you are), then please wait until you can afford this. You can always help transcribe a census, add your info to our site, type, get cemetery directions, give your support & love to the rest of us,etc. Our "talents" are many, & all different. Some of you may be able to do all, & some may be just a "Cheerleader". I love you all! Have a sweet week! Momma Walton <><
I am looking for information on the parents of Mary Elizabeth McDaniel (McDonald) who married Sidney White Harper 27 Mar 1890 in Morgan County (next to Walton). She was born 20 Dec 1865, reportedly in Jackson County, GA, and died 4 June 1946 at the home of her son Sidney in Bishop, Oconee County, GA. Their home while her husband was alive was right on the boundary of Morgan and Walton County. Her marriage license and certificate list her surname as McDaniel, but the information in her obituary lists her as a McDonald. Since she was alive to give the information to get her marriage license, I would like to assume that she gave her real surname, but there is always the chance that she eloped and gave a false name for some reason... Supposedly she is the daughter of a Jack McDonald (McDaniel???) and a Sarah, according to the information included in her obituary. The obituary did not list any siblings. If this fits in to any information that any of you might have, I would love to hear from you! Tricia Autry
