Winder is in Barrow Co - the county just north of Walton. Don't know the answer to your AME question.
Winder is in Barrow County, which was created in 1914 from portions of Jasper, Gwinnett and Walton. It was at one time known as Jug Tavern. AME is the acronym for African Methodist Episcopal Church and probably has to do with the fact that a few years before, and maybe 65-70 years after, The War Between The States the Methodist Church in the South was known as "The Methodist Episcopal Church South". (The break had to do with the Methodist Bishop of Georgia refusing to free a slave which his wife had inherited, and who did not herself seek her freedom.) It is my understanding that, after The War, the African American members declared their independence form the MEC(S). To the best of my knowledge they have not rejoined the Methodists in the South (at least those churches in Walton County continue to display AME signs). The Methodists here are once again (since around 1940) a part of general Methodism in the U. S., known as the United Methodist Episcopal Church. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bettie Wood" <nana321@txucom.net> To: <GAWALTON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: 03 April, 2000 15:53 Subject: [GAWALTON] AME?? > Ok, someone help me out! > I thought Winder was in Walton Co. Just a reminder that this book is copyrighted! It has barely been out for a week, with lots & lots of hard work put into the book. I think it would be nice to at least wait until the Society has had a chance to sell some of the books. For Gwinnett County, you can write or email the Gwinnett Historical Society Gwinnett Historical Society P.O.Box 261 Lawrenceville, GA 30046 (770) 822-5174 http://www.adsd.com/ghs MF 9:30AM1:30PM 1ST & 3RD THURS NITE 5-9PM 4TH SAT 9AM-12PM Street Address Gwinnett Historic Courthouse, 185 Crogan St, , Lawrenceville, GA They can possibly help you. I took a quick look at some of my Gwinnett reference books but didn't see a John or David Daniel married to an Emma Wood(s) in J. C. Flanigan's History of Gwinnett County 1818-1960 Vol II.. There is a Daniel family history for James J. Daniel by Stella S. Bowen on pages 142-4 of Gwinnett County Families, 1818-1968 (Both books published by the GHS). I know that others on this list are more familiar with Jackson County sources than I so I will let them respond to that part of your question. As far as I know Winder hasn't moved around much lately. It is in Barrow County just Northeast of Gwinnett. It may have been in Gwinnett or possibly Jackson or Clarke County at one time. Barrow was created from these counties in 1914, I believe. They have a new cemetery book which is just out. This announcement just appeared on several different county lists. I'm not sure if it appeared on Walton-L or not. But here it is again in any case. "Barrow County Georgia Cemeteries" Compiled by East Georgia Genealogical Society [formerly the Piedmont Regional Genealogy Society] While supplies last, this book may be ordered by sending a check for $40.00 plus $3.00 mailing cost to: East Georgia Genealogical Society P.O. Box 117 Winder, Georgia 30680 For additional information you may visit the Society's web site at <http://www.rootsweb.com/~gaeggs> Georgia has 159 counties at last count. I have always said tounge-in-cheek that what they need is a few more counties with a few more local governments for the taxpayers to support. Sorry, I lost my head there for a moment. Back to the email questions. As for the A.M.E., yes, I believe that this always refers to African Methodist Episcopal church. I recently saw a write-up regarding the history of this name and some of the background of this church but can't remember where at the moment. I'm sure that anyone who is interested could find out quickly by doing a web search with one of the general web search engines. Walter Freeman Bettie Wood wrote: > Ok, someone help me out! I can't tell from Texas!haha Also, does a cemetery that has A.M.E. in it's name always mean "African Methodist Episcopal"? We have some on our Cemtery page that have this in their name, & wondered what it stood for. When Tina sent her email, I said "AH-HA!" but I'm not sure?? I hope the sun is shining down on you today! Hi all, I recently saw some precious photos of Ashley Katarina Valencia,b.2/22/00, granddaughter of Dot HUNT. After viewing them, I got to hankering for another grandangel too!--Yes, down in Texas we "hanker"! I'm sure she would be more than happy to share with you too. WARNING: they are cute!!!! Several newbies (& oldies) have requested my address for mailing census image monies to. That is: Bettie WOOD 46 Chapparral Tatum, TX 75691 Remember, every dollar counts, & puts us that much closer to our goal. Please let me know beforehand that you are sending money, so I can be on the look-out. Also include your email address, so I can easily inform you when it reaches here! If you've given once, you can give again--as much as you want, or as little as you want! I've recently added these (& probably more) to our web site: 1) A gob of marriages, brides & grooms. I am positive there's some mistakes! If you see some, let me know & I'll correct asap. 2) "Surnames of Interest" -- 2 surnames--PARKER & LANE--have you included yours? 3) Census section has been "remodelled", & we now have 1850 index of sorts. (alphabetized surnames with page numbers only--no given names) I believe that's all I've uploaded so far. Take a look & tell me what I'm missing, & definitely make sure I've included your info somewhere on our page! I guess that's all for now. I'm just so blue today, & think I'll take a nap. April Fool's! haha I'm not blue, but a nap does sound good!!! Love ya, Momma Walton <><
Hi everyone: Received a message from a "cousin" that, effective July 1, 2000, the National Archives will be increasing the price of Military Records from $10 to $17.50 and the price of Pension Records from $10 to $40. That is quite an increase!! I tried to check this out online, but http://www.nationalarchives.com is under construction and I don't know another URL. Anyway -- if you have been procrastinating about ordering that pension record . . you might want to go on and get it soon. Always, Nancy Guest jguest@alltel.net

Hi all, What a nice day out, isn't it?!! We now have $105 towards the 1880 census images, leaving us a balance of $135 due. The 1840, & 1860 images should be online mid-April, & the 1900 in late May. Sidney DYESS is doing transcriptions for 1840, & has 2 districts done & the index done already!! Good job Sidney!! Is anyone else working on a Walton Co. census too? Let's see if I can explain the URL in my email address, & do a better job this time!! haha Here's an example from the last email I sent, that shows our URL--see organization Subject: FROM BILL LANDRESS Date: Thu, 30 Mar 2000 11:46:13 -0600 From: Bettie Wood <nana321@txucom.net> Organization: http://www.rootsweb.com/~gawalton/ To: GAWALTON-L@rootsweb.com Does this help? I may not be around much until after 14 April. We're having our carpet laid on the 13th, & have been doing some painting, repairing, removing old floors, etc. Have you ever noticed how BIG your house gets when you a painting, flooring job, etc. to do???? I've also been working on adding more marriages, & hope to be done before the carpet, so I go on to our Veteran page??? Thanks to Lowell, I've added some more directions to our cemeteries page. We also have some new surnames, or researchers added to our "Surnames of Interest" page. I believe those are JONES, PALMER, & RICHARDSON??? maybe 1 or 2 more. Check & see Ya'll don't worry about me being too busy (or you being to slow!!haha)to take your info. I take it no matter what!!! It just might take awhile to post it to our site--a couple of weeks?? I've learned to print most of the "input" info out, & then I'll have it in case of another pc disaster. I have another "big" project in mind, & hope it works like I think it will. It involves our surnames, & making a mini web page. I have a "guinea pig" (wondered who SHE is???) that has sent me some info to try to work it out with!! I'm very anxious to start on that too, but first things first! I guess that's all for now! Have a nice Happy Face day! Love, Momma Walton <><
This email below is from Bill LANDRESS, so please reply to him: williamlandress@earthlink.net More in a bit, Momma Walton <>< > Searching for my Great Great Grandfather, Eli Landress, born in S.C. in > 1809. > I Need to know what City/Town He was born in and also his exact > Birthdate > (Mo. & Day). > > Appreciatively, > > Bill
