    1. [GAWALTON] How to preserve a newspaper clipping
    2. Dorothy Cox
    3. Here's something that I thought you might use someday. Dot Sorrells Cox HOW TO PRESERVE A NEWSPAPER CLIPPING When you find a birth or wedding announcement or obituary in the newspaper or want to save a , special recipe, here's how: To preserve a newspaper clipping, dissolve a milk of magnesia tablet in a quart of club soda and let it sit overnight. The next day pour the mixture into a pan large enough to hold the flattened newspaper clipping. Soak the clipping for one hour: remove and gently pat dry. Place the clipping on a flat surface and do not move until completely dry. The estimated life of your clipping after the milk of magnesia treatment is 200 years.

    2. Carol Hawk
    3. Hi all! I am new to this wonderful sight and have been researching our HAWK family for over three years now! We have numerous relatives buried in Walton County and the following are just a few! Hillsman (b1808 d1867)& Mahala Hawk(b1809 d1865) are buried in the Malcom #2 Cemetary Thurman(b1805 d7/14/1870 & Mary Hawkb1814 d7/15/1870) both died of Smallpox. I show "Buried near Ebenezer Church" John Malcom(b1784 d 12/25/1862) buried in Green Cemetary Joanna Hawk Adcock and Barnett Adcock are buried in Ivy Cemetary Ann A.E. Abercrombie Hawk is buried in Aycock Cemetary Permelia Hawk Queen and Jospeh Queen are buried in Queen Cemetary Sarah Hawk Hestor is buried in the Union Chapel Church Cemetary and her husband Barnett Hestor is buried in the Ivey Cemetary These all come from various resources. As a novice I haven't documented everything. My current research brings me to a W.T. Dickerson who married a Nancy A. Malcom. This Nancy A. Malcom Dickerson I believe married our ancestor Hillsman Hawk shortly before his death in 1867. Any info would be greatly appreciated. I am also trying to locate the malcom and Hawk Plantations that I believe were located at least partially in Walton County. I have various descriptions of the lands sold as part of his administration. Additionally, I am interested in Jasper Newton Smith who may have been born in walton and definately married in Walton County. He married hillsman's second daughter Rebecca. No mention of her in his will and i have no information on her death which may have taken place in Fulton County where Jasper moved after the Civil War. Very excited about all the Possibilities that exist in this kind of forum! Look forward to hearing from you! It is on the back side of Atha Circle which is only about 1/4 mile from Corinth Christian Church & Cemetery. There are still several Atha families living on Atha Circle, Nelson Atha and Charlie Will Atha and his sister Lucile Atha Yancey. All very nice people. I have done some research on this land with regards to those living around it. Interesting that you would be researching this family. Ida

Here's what I have so far. Lucretia WILLINGHAM married Enoch (?) NEEDHAM. Lucretia was born 1803 in GA, died in 1881 and is buried in Corinth Memorial Cemetery. Supposedly, her husband left her with the children and went to TX with another woman. I follow her on census info 1850-1880 in Walton Co. Her children included Charles B. who married Rebecca GRIFFIN on Nov 27, 1844 in Walton Co. Their children included Nancy, born 1848, Lucretia C. born 1849, Rolley born 1851, John Enoch born 1854 and Luginia (?)Cisaline born 1856-1858. ***Lucretia C. married William B. NEEDHAM, on Sept 14, 1865 in Walton Co. William B. was born 1849 (?). (who were his parents, siblings) Her children with William include John H., Kyle G, W. Augustus, Carrie, Troy Lee. *** Rolley married to Mary Brown. There were four children born in Walton Co, (Corinth), Tulula F., Texana, Charles Adolphus, and James W. Their last child, Elizabeth R. was born in AL. in 1888. I have a problem with the date of James W. and don't know if Rolley was father to him for sure. Another child of Lucretia Willingham Needham was Kile G. I do not have any info on him except he was born around 1830. Samuel L. was born 1833-1836 in Walton Co. He married Lucretia C. Griffin on Dec 17, 1857. She was born in GA and I was told sister or cousin of Rebecca that married Charles B. They had the following children: Samuel (or Sandel) born 1856-1859. Sarah born 1858, Charles born 1866, Delany (Lanie) born 1870 and James P. born 1872 in GA. Mary E. Needham was the only daughter of Lucretia (1803-1881) that I know of. A clue indicates she may have married a John ATHA/ATHY. She was born about 1833. Lucretia's son Rollie born Dec 10, 1835. He died Mar 1, 1920 and is buried at Corinth Memorial Cemetery. I know he was injured in Civil War and lived with mother 1850-1880. I do not show marriage. (But one researcher says he is descendant of Rollie. I have yet to prove one way or another.) In the 1850 census there is a John Athy living in the household of Lucretia Needham. In 1880 it list a Mary Atha (40) as daughter, Dolie Atha (27) daughter, and Richard E. Atha (21) son in her house. There is Marmon B. Moon (60) listed as boarder. There were two other boarders that I do not have access to their names. I understand through other researchers that MOON is a connected family also. If any of you are researching these names, I would love to share info. Since I just started 3 months ago and still consider myself a newbie, please don't hesitate to correct my info. 1. [GAWALTON] Tanner's & Barrow Co. Cemeteries
    2. Hi Bonner - As there are other Tanner researchers in Walton Co., I'm going to send a copy of this to Mama Walton's list. Most of the references I have on Tanner are from my next book, and are from deeds recorded in the time period 1808-1816 (I'm working on those recorded in 1816 right now), deed books E & F, Jackson Co. Deed Book E, p. 240. Deed dated 3/14/1803, John Woods to Charles Weatherford - Archa. Tanner was a witness. Deed Book E, p. 317. Deed dated Nov. 20, 1809, Wm. Smith to Larkin Camp, $100 for 50 acres on the Appalachee River adjoining Archl. Tanner & Jeremiah Smith ... Deed Book F, p. 222. Jane. 22, 1816, Samuel Smith to Burgess Reeves ... Arche Tanner was a witness. There are also references to David, Landley, Matthew, Gideon & John Tanner. In the book GWINNETT COUNTY FAMILIES, 1818-1968, there is an article about William Tanner. He was the first Tanner in Gwinnett, moved from Walton Co. in 1853 & settled on a 500-acre farm near Dacula. He was born 10/15/1825 to Hezekiah & Elizabeth Auston (Cleaton) Tanner. > Thanks for mentioning the Tanner family in your Walton mail list e-mail. > Yes, we were talking about them. I have been trying to find out about the > will of Archibald Tanner and was looking (and even called!) in Walton County. > Had no idea he was in Jackson County. Do you, by chance, have an abstract > of the will of Archibald (b. 1776, d. bet 1850-1860)? Any information on him > would be helpful to me. I am particularly interested in knowing who his > children were. > > Thanks for the info you sent in to that list. Never know who it will help > and it did help me! > > Bonner I hope it helped, Bonner. Wish I had more! Did Archebald definitely have a will in Walton Co.? What did the Probate Office tell you, or did they even look? If he had a will, it would have been in Walton since Barrow was not formed until later. I have abstracted and have a book out on the Wills of Jackson Co. (1803-1888), and he didn't leave a will in Jackson Co. The Archebald mentioned above in the deeds must have been born in 1776. It just dawned on me that I made pictures of Arch Tanner's grave, and Martha A., wife of Arch Tanner, Sr.'s grave. He was born in 1816, d. Apr. 11, 1900 and Martha A. was born in 1835 & died 1909. Wonder if she was a second wife? They had sort of tall monuments, & I thought they were very neat looking. I also took several other pictures at the little cemetery, one of a grave with lots of large rocks on it, but no name (probably the 1st Archebald). There was a broken tombstone with Mary Hand's name on it, Jan. 28, 1821 - Mar. 1879. A couple of concrete slab graves with no markings (but I made pictures). There is also a Gideon Tanner family cemetery which is near Carl, GA. He was b. 1818 and d. 1897. Possibly this was a brother of Arch Tanner? Gideon is about 1-1/2 years younger. Anyway, there are bunches of Tanner graves in the Barrow Co. Cemetery book. The book right now costs $35 + $3 postage, but will go up in price if ordered after it gets back from the printers. It will be sent to the printers in Jan., and takes about 6 to 8 weeks to be returned. Its hardback, full-name index, about 600 pages. Great book! If anybody is interested, there is an order form at the East GA Genealogical Soc. web site at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~gaeggs Faye

    1. [GAWALTON] Barrow Co. Cemeteries
    2. Hi Mama Walton - Did Jim-Bob Patton mention that we've in the final stages of the BARROW COUNTY CEMETERIES book? The book will be sent to the printers early in January Y2K. Ya'll may not be aware of it, but Barrow was formed in 1914 out of three counties - Walton, Gwinnett & Jackson counties. What really brought this home to me was when rechecking some dates on tombstones a week or so ago, and three of them said "died in Walton County." Barrow is a young county in name only! Some of the graves are pretty old. BTW, last night I passed by the cemetery on Hwy. 78 in Loganville (Walton Co.) It is now decorated with all white Xmas lights in the front - looks really neat. There's a small summerhouse(?) decorated with white lights, the gate, a couple of reindeer all lit up, etc., etc. Didn't someone mention a TANNER line two or three weeks ago? There is a very small cemetery in the middle of some woods in Barrow Co., that of an Archabald Tanner (1816-1900), his wife Martha and several others. I suppose this must be the son of Archabald Tanner of Jackson Co. (I've abstracted several deeds lately with this name). > Hi gang, > I just wanted to touch base with ya'll & let you a few (very few) new > changes have been made to Our site! > 1) A couple of surnames have been added to "Surnames of Interest" > 2) Neighboring Counties has a nice change there--thanks to Jim-"Bob" > PATTON!--MUST SEE!!!!!!! 2. Ida
    3. Hi All! Corinth Memorial Gardens is located on Hwy. 81 South of Loganville about 5 miles. It is across the road from Corinth Christian Church (you can't miss it)on your right. . If coming North on Hwy 81 from Walnut Grove (Hwy 138) is is about 2-1/2 miles on your left. There are only two cemeteries on Hwy. 81 between Walnut Grove and Loganville, one is Corinth and the other is Walnut Grove Methodist Church Cemetery. Corinth has a new fairly large sign in front so you can't miss it. Any more questions, let me know. Needham Cemetery is an entirely different cemetery. Ida

    3. Hi all, Thank you to all for your wonderfully BIG hearts, love, & compassion, especially during my "troubling" times! This will be our "project" for the week--All about cemeteries in Walton County. What I'm asking for is any known burials of your ancestors such as: their name(s), cemetery name, location/directions, other names for the cemeteries, dates (birth & death of your ancestors), questions about cemeteries, & anything else you can think of. One of our Gen-Sisters needs some help too-- She needs a more precise location of Corinth Cemetery. She plans a visit to this one, & it would really be a BIG help to have directions- Also, is another name for Corinth Cemetery-- the Needham Cemetery? I know there's a couple of ya'll that info, & I know ya'll can fill us in! Thanks in advance!! Night sweeties! Momma Walton <>< PS I saw this today...somewhere??? 3. Hi,Momma! Got ancestor or 2 buried in Walton County. William Marion Hunt Parents E.D.OliverHunt & C.W. Hunt born June 18,1921 died 3/3/1963 buried in Clegg Cemetary. His Mom most likely buried there too as "Fannie Higginbotham" or as E.D. Higginbotham nee Oliver formerly Mrs.C.W. Hunt. Don't know what E. D. is all about, maybe Mr. Higginbotham's initials! She died in either the 1970s or 1980s. Bridges Funeral handled Dad's service & possibly hers. She was a nurse & on my brother's birth cetificate it says Dad worked at "Oliver Gen. Hsp!" Us "kids" were born at University Hsp in Augusta. Don't know if Oliver Hsp in Athens or where in Ga,but driving distance from Augusta 4 sure! Dad worked there as a porter or sweeper? Got his military records & they contained an F.B.I. file...Petty crimes far as I can see but that was 1940. Lot of medicine in my family! Mom & sister both nurses, too. I worked in business office at hsp...LOL. I will have my 6th grandchild in march & I had to fight an ex-daughter-in-law to see 3 of them so your personal problems I comprehend to the max..I have custody of 2 grandkids. Sorry you lost someone you cared for. I haven't had to face that yet. Well,if I can feed our database any more I'll write! Bye,now.Dorothy~

Some of ya'll worry about the "goings on" here, so I'll fill you in. (This is my personal stuff, so if you want to delete...) My Sunday School teacher's husband passed away early Thanksgiving morning. He had cancer from working around asbestos, & had had one chemo treatment, plus he'd had 2 strokes. Hospice had been called in, but no one was expecting his passing this soon. It's always hard to lose a loved one, & Loved he was! My SS teacher is like a Mom to me, especially since my mom is absent from my life at this time. It really has sadden me, even though I know the angels are rejoicing!! Also, my daughter has been in an abusive relationship for several years. She is the mother of my precious one & only granddaughter, & has physical custody of her. We just got our grandparent visitation granted to us this past February. On Friday morning, after Thanksgving, she (my daughter) called me & was ready to get out! We spent the day moving them both in here. Then Saturday was the day of the funeral for our glory bound friend. Our Sunday School provided the lunch before the funeral, & prepared for about 75 people. I have been so blessed to be a part of a church & Sunday School that truly loves the Lord, & they are the absolute best at jumping in to help anyone in need. I, of course, needed, & they, of course, jumped! Then I'm blessed again when I come home to this list, & have such comfort & joy from each of you! You're the absolute best! I love you all!!
