Hey Momma and other researchers, Speaking of cemeteries. I talked to my aunt tonight. We have been trying for a few years to find out how we could get back to the Tanner cemetery. My Gr-Gr-Grandparents, James Nathaniel and Lucy Haynes Sorrells, as well as Gr-grandparents, James Sanders and Della Westmoreland Sorrells and several gr-aunts, uncles and cousins are also buried there. My aunt has been trying for years to get back there. WELL, a few days ago she was going to get her hair done and as she drove up the Monroe - Jersey Road she saw that someone was putting a gravel Road back through that land. Close to the cemetery but not up to it. She and my uncle spoke to the owner and he said that this was HIS driveway not a public road and he is building a house back in there. There just happens to be a gate there close to the cemetery, with a combination lock on it. After much fussing, threatening and begging, the man gave aunt Runell the combination. She is going to try to get some people that can clean it up. She said it is in really poor shape because cows have been able to roam free there. The fence is old and down in places. Well, at least next time I can go up there I can finally visit my ancestors graves. Before, the only thing I could do was stand at a gate and look waaaaaaaaaaay out in a field and see the tiny headstones. I just noticed after reading over this message that I even write with a Georgia accent. I do that every time I talk to my Walton County relatives, and I was born in Florida! Good night. Dot Sorrells Cox
Hi all, Just a few questions-- Does anyone know if Bell Cemetery & Bell Family Cemetery are the same?? Do you all want me to include latitude & longitude along the cemetery names, if available? Should I continue to list cemeteries that are "black"? I don't know if this is proper, offends anyone, or if it's even necessary. Please let me know. Some updates are already done, many more left still to be done! Thanks! Have a nice week! Love Momma Walton <><
Hi all, This just came in on the GA list, but don't know if you all subscribe to it or not.??? Gives you hope, BUT they still do junk , don't they? Hi all, Whew--I'm getting pooped, BUT I'm getting there. I'm back & forth on the pages, casue I didn't ask some questions first. I still have lots of questions--some of you have already gotten yours, & some WILL be here shortly! I'll need your help when I'm done too. Some of you I will write, & NEED your responses back so I can know I've entered your info correctly on Our site. Please don't get toooooo excited over seeing a surname in the subject line, cause it'll probably be just me checking! I kind of got side-tracked (can you believe that????) today. My son had some kind of wild rash, that's spreading & hurts. He had to come home for awhile, so Momma could fix it (& eat too)! Well, Momma to the rescue (I hope! haha) Well, he's gone for another week, or until he gets hungry! Thing is, my daughter (the one that just moved back in with granddoll) had a bad rash too! I think they got in some poison ivy?oak? Anyway, I thought ya'll would enjoy hearing that!--I don't know why??? Anyway, I have gotten permission to post about the Cemetery project thingy to GA list, & will be doing that shortly! I also wrote The Walton Tribune to see if we can't get some help from them??? Maybe later we can hit 'em up about our Census Project, & maybe get some help! They do have a genealogy portion on their web site, which goes to USGenWeb, which eventually comes back to us now! Isn't this cool how this internet thing works? Now, if I could ever milk a cow, I think that would be progress, too, (for me) & so much fun to learn! Ok, I'll shush up for now--if you're lucky! Have some dinner, study my Sunday School lesson, & then back at it! Oh, I forgot to tell you--Thanks to John DAVIS & Valesca for putting me on to some great Civil War info for Our site. I'll be working on that as soon as I get done with the other!! Can't wait! Love ya by the bushels! Momma Walton <>< And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. Gal. 6:9
Mike, many thanks, and I will add your name to the slowly growing list of volunteers for typing and searching. Got a volunteer from Gainesville earlier today, too. Wayne, The Georgia Archives in Atlanta and/or the University of Georgia Library in Athens are, I think, your best bets. There is little to no store of genealogy readily available in either the library records in Walton County or in the court records. I received this email, & told Wayne I would send it to the list, so here goes. Please respond to Wayne, address below. Elijah McDonald was born May 1834 in Georgia. We believe he was born in Walton or Talbot counties. Do not know his parents names. He had 6 brothers who he thought were all killed in teh Civil War. He married a Martha B. Brooks in Pike county, Alabama in 1857. Her father was Jacob Rutledge Brooks and her mother was Rebecca Jarrot Sappington. It was said Elijah followed the Brooks to Alabama. I plan to travel to Georiga in two weeks. Any help or other suggestions about what resources are available for searching records prior to 1857 would be appreciated. Wayne McDonald WMcdon7794@aol.com
Hi all, We (Walter & I) thought this might be of interest to all! I'm sorry it has taken so long for me to post this, but you know how I am these days!! haha I have dealt with these folks, & personally am glad to be "rid" of them, but your tastes may differ from mine! Mama Walton...So glad to see you warn the list about these people, I like to never got them to remove me from their mailing list...Mail List? More like HARASSING List. They kelp trying to get me to give them my genealogy so they could sell it, I politely told them no that I gave it to sites that let people have it for FREE, like ANCESTRY.COM. They would NOT take NO for an answer until I got rather ugly with them! Gladys
Hi all, Can you or anyone else tell us how we can help? If we live a good distance away, are we still able to do something? I live in good 'ole Texas, & would be more than happy to help with something. If you all can give us ideas in what way we can do something, please let us know! I KNOW most of the kids will! Also, can we post something on Our site? We can always use Our web site to at least make folks aware of what is going on, don't you think? Ida, if you'll type something up, I'll be glad to get this uploaded to Our site--TODAY!!! Good work, guys & gals! All, Ida's note much appreciated. One correction, however: I am not President of the Historical Society, only a Trustee, having resigned as Secretary 4 Jan 2000 to have more time to devote to the Cemetery Locator Project. We had a good meeting on the Cemetery Locator Project 6 Jan 2000 afternoon. Herewith is a copy of the item I sent along to the Walton Tribune on the subject: >>>>>To: Will Davis The Walton Tribune tribstaff@waltontribune.com Will, that following is the gist of our meeting earlier this afternoon. The Historical Society of Walton County, Preservation and Landmark Committee, held a meeting at the Monroe/Walton County Public Library 6 January afternoon. The purpose was to provide an update on the Cemetery Locator Project and a general discussion of community cooperation in protection of the cemeteries in the County. Present were Gene Cox, Walter Cox, Jayne Malcom and Josiah Blasingame of the Walton County Historical Society. Others present included Rep. Renee Unterman, District 84; Rep. Len Walker, District 87; District Attorney Alan Cook; Maj. Al Yarborough of the Walton County Sheriff's Criminal Investigation Division; Dane Perry, Walton County Manager; Mike Martin, Chairman Walton County Planning, Development and Zoning; Robert Mitchell, Sons of Confederate Veterans. The session was a general review of the progress of the Historical Society of Walton County Cemetery Locator Project to date and a recognition by all present of the need for continued close cooperation with the various elements of the County Government. Once the cemetery data is collected and recorded on the County maps existing law should be sufficient to provide adequate protection of our cemeteries for the future. A key element in the success of the project is that all cemeteries be precisely located, so .... if you know of burial sites that might be overlooked, or if you want to volunteer for survey work itself, please call Walter Cox at 770-267-9703.>>>> Walter ----- Original Message ----- From: Ida <ida@avana.net> To: <GAWALTON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: 07 January, 2000 11:21 Subject: [GAWALTON] Walton County Cemeteries - Update > At the close of deer hunting season this weekend, members of the Sons > of the Confederacy as well as other volunteers, will begin the task of > locating and marking cemeteries in order to protect them from > developers. Trying to find info on JAMES LACE MOORE, born June 14, 1838. He is buried at Hillcrest Cemetery in Loganville, Walton Co., GA. He died July 24, 1915. Any assistance will be appreciated. Ann Cates Blythewood, SC
I am trying to find out who the parents are for MARY JANE MOORE, born June 14, 1836. She married JOHN WILLIAM PALMER in Walton Co., GA, on February 14, 1854. She died September 3, 1913, and is buried at Hillcrest Cemetery in Loganville, Walton Co., GA. If anyone needs any info on her children, I will be glad to help. Ann Cates Blythewood, SC
At the close of deer hunting season this weekend, members of the Sons of the Confederacy as well as other volunteers, will begin the task of locating and marking cemeteries in order to protect them from developers. So far there have been 85 cemeteries located that were not included in the book "In Remembrance". Anyone interested in volunteering for this project should contact Mr. Walter Cox, President of the Walton County Historical Society, (770) 267-9703. Once the task of locating and marking the cemeteries is complete, volunteers will be needed to help type the information. My name is already on the list to type, if anyone else is interested, please contact Mr. Cox. Ida
I have completed the transcription of the 1830 Walton County Federal Census and am in need of a proofreader to edit the transcription before it is uploaded to the USGenWeb Census Project. I will supply a printout of the transcription, but the proofreader will need to go to an Archives to use their microfilm to compare with the transcription. Any offers? Ross Jones
Hi kiddoes, I'll be updating Our web site this weekend, starting tomorrow! Please make sure I have your info that needs to be added. Also remember that I do NOT enter your info without your permission first! Is there anything further that we need to discuss on Our Cemetery project???? If you know of an ancestor that is buried in Walton Co., even if you're not sure of where, please submit your info! There is now a place on Our web site for this info too. http://www.rootsweb.com/~gawalton/ We now have about 150 subscribers. We've had 15-20 new subscribers join us in Dec. We welcome you all, & look forward to reading your queries & such. Please take time to introduce yourselves, & include the info you're looking for. We need to include all your info too, especially in these areas: 1) Cemeteries--who & where are your ancestors buried? 2) Do you have a web page? Is this for Walton Co. families, or just a personal page? We can add these to Gen-Kids home pages. 3) Veterans--Do you have a veteran that once lived in Walton Co? It doesn't matter what war. You can type your own bio, or send your info to me & I'll type something, BUT it's much better from you! 4) Surnames--What are your Walton Co. surnames? 5) Marriages--Do you know of an ancestor that married in Walton Co? 6) For Sale--Do you have something, or a service that involves GA? This would be a good place to advertise your items/services. 7) Look-ups--Can you provide a look-up service through a book, library, cemetery, census, etc.? 8) County Resources--Do you know of a county resource of help to researchers that is not included in this section? 9) Have I forgotten a Populated Place, Cemetery, anything that needs to be included? Our web site is only as good as the info we include. Please --if you have info send it! In the next few weeks we'll get started on our "census chat" again, so be thinking what we want to do, & how we want to "finance" this. Ray, have you found the help you needed in transcribing the census? I'll be able to get to the library tomorrow??? & could probably look for you. Let me know! Another reminder about the GenConnect boards--they are all ours now!!! These include: queries, Bible records, bios, deeds, obits, pensions, & wills. If you have something in these areas to submit, then go to Our web page, & click on one of the squares. We are also now listed on the USGenWeb page! Progress has been slow, BUT we're getting there. I appreciate your patience as I work on Our web site, think up "projects", do my own research (selfish, aren't I?), take care of "my" other lists, answer personal emails,& grandbaby sit (work, work, work??haha), along with my houslehold duties (yuck!!) Thanks to all! You're still the best! I am truly blessed!!! That's all for now??? Love ya a bunch of buckets full! I am currently in the process of transcribing the 1870 census for Walton County. I am using images off a CD from Heritage Quest. The images are in very good condition, but the enumerator sometimes writes really "sloppy". I need another set of eyes that can help me decipher some of these names. If anyone has a printed, film or whatever copy of the 1870 census, and is willing to help me, please contact me. I have two right now that have me stumped. (1) page 324b, line 10 and (2) page 329b, line 7. Thanks to any and all. Have a great New Year. Ray Beam (Sacramento, Ca)
Hi Dorothy & all, First of all--Happy New Year to each one of you, & thank you for such a great year!! Now, Dorothy--let's see if we can get you straightened out here, ok? This is your list too, & if you see fit to post something of interest to you (staying with in mostly genealogical interest), then you should do so! There is no need to get permission of 6 or more. If any of you ever have a doubt on what you can post, PLEASE contact me. I don't think any of us will pounce on you for posting anything. The only time there should be a disagreement on what is posted, is if there is a constant stream of "off topic" mails. I've tried to cover these things in my "welcome" letter, & I hope that each one of us feel "at home" enough to post what you want. Of course, I, myself, will not tolerate any vulgar language, any slander against my Savior (whatsoever), or will give the malicious "talker" a good talking to! So far, we have no such thing in this "family" yet, & I hope this continues! I'm sure it will, cause ya'll are a wonderful bunch, very supportive, & extremely helpful. Plus, we are all adults! I Located 2 McKees in Laurel & Waynesboro,Ms with tons of Mckee, choctaw, jones, etc. info. 1 is "Dewey McKee" who is currently writing history of county school system. There was (or is) a McKee school there. He & some Texas McKee's have roots in Flint,Michigan(as do I, actually, never knew!) Also in Ca. Best of all, Dewey was taken to an abandoned cemetery by 2 McKee uncles when he expressed an interest in genealogy & Dewey got the Tx branch to assist him in restoring it. I have been sending to lists, county execs, & newspapers an article I found on-line about an Indiana county that hired 2 men to locate & restore abandoned cemeteries. Now I find Dewey & other relatives were ahead of this article. Makes me so proud to be related! A man here in Jersey City who is a list mgr for rootsweb wrote of a cemetery here that was in deplorable shape & was exhorting vast sums from descendents to give them info so I went there to check it out & luckily found it was under repair & new management. Then there was an article I found abt a rabbi in cahoots with a cemetery to resell burial plots covering over graves & tossing out records of burials that I sent around the www so folks who would never dream of such actions would become aware & watch out for it in their area. If anyone wants copes of these i am doroab@webtv.net & welcome chance to be assisted in fwd these articles & receiving any you find so i can fwd them. thanks to all of you & I hope someone doesn't object to this mail or to me sending it to 6 lists simultaneously.
