Hi all, We have a brave soul that is fixing to start (has applied) for a MARCHMAN mail list. He isn't "in Our family", but has ancestors by that name. I'll let you know when it's up & running so you can subscribe! That is if he lets me know! Good luck, & thanks for still loving me!!! Momma Walton <><
Hi all, I'm pretty sure I made another goof--can you believe that?? I requested that ya'll tell me when you had posted your queries to the GenConnect boards--well, I've only got 2 listed (Valesca & me) I think there were a few more & I didn't get thenm marked & of course, don't remember who all posted! Am I fired??? If not, could I request that you sned me that info again, & to which boards you posted to. Thanks ya'll--hope you still love me!!?? I was excited by a MALCOLM posting (we have 4 researchers), & have written to all concerned on that. I hope there is at least one link to that, & you all will share your story with us! Still haven't heard about the new GenConnect boards for those few "homeless" surnames. It won't be long though! I did hear from researcher wanting to start a mail list for their surname! Hooray for them! Good luck all, thanks for putting up with me, & think I will go to bed. There's been enough mistakes tonight! haha Love you all, Momma Walton <><
Here's the URL for John FULLER's home page. This has genealogy resources on the internet, & lists some web pages. Lots of good stuff! http://members.aol.com/johnf14246/index.html
Hi all, I was thinking I probably need to divide our marriage up into brides & grooms. The page has gotten quite long, & I don't have all the marriages entered yet (where does the time go???) It would probably help the page load faster if I did this, don't yo think? I'm trying to figure a way I can easily do this, so may take a bit, as usual. I finally have my RHOADES query up, so you can see how this works. Thank you all for jumping in & participating. Ya'll are a bunch of hard workers, & make me very proud!!! VERY! I haven't heard anything yet on the new GenConnect boards, BUT will as soon as I get word! I haven't heard from anyone yet about starting a list for their surname. Let me encourage you to do so. IF you REALLY don't want to start one, let me know, & I MIGHT start one for you???? However, I might start one & then turn it over for adoption??? Just let me know how I can help, ok? Has everybody checked out their links to make sure they work properly??? That's all for now??? Love Momma Walton <><
Dear Fellow Babies, I saw on the Walton County Marriage Board the following: "James T. Hilley m. (1) Edna Sorrells 22 September 1870 and (2) Eliza Morgan." Would like very much to correspond with the person who posted this. I am one of a group of HILLEY "cousins" researching the descendants of Thomas Hilley, Sr., RS. His grandson, James Thomas Hilley, married Amanda W. Fuller in Walton County in 1851. He was killed in the Civil War, and Amanda remarried Isaac Alexander Dingler and subsequently moved to Texas. The James T. Hilley who married (1) Edna Sorrells and (2) Eliza Morgan must have been closely related to our Hilleys. We would like to add him to our information. Please contact Nancy Guest at jguest@alltel.net or put your answer on WALTON-L. Thanks so much. Nancy B. Guest (706) 886-6681
Does anyone have information on Hudson Gaston b1871 d1920 and Tom Gaston b1872 d 1907.Both are buried in Social Circle Cemetery. RGHunter3@aol.com
Got This from Another List, Thought it had good information. Gladys Dating Tombstones One way to help find the era your ancestor was buried is to examine the material from which the tombstone is made. If your ancestor has a stone made of slate or common fieldstone (except wood used by pioneers), chances are the stone dates from 1796-1830. * If the stone is flat-topped hard marble, dates are about 1830-1849. * If the "mystery" stone is round or pointed soft marble with cursive inscriptions, look for a date of 1845-1868. * Masonic four-sided stones began in 1850 and are still in use today. * Pylons, columns and all exotic-style monuments are usually dated 1860-1900. * Zinc monuments date from 1870-1900. * Granite, now common, came into use about 1900. If the writing is too faded to read, use a 75 watt black light bulb in any lamp that casts light directly on the written message. The writing will miraculously appear.
Hi all, The "Surnames of Interest" section is finished until I get more surnames to add. Do I have yours yet? Please check spelling, etc. I still need to go back & make sure my email links are all working correctly, so be expecting your email (& return to me as required--this is if your surname is new & hadn't been checked yet) Now, there were a few surnames that didn't have a GenConnect board OR mail list. I requested the GenConnect Boards for those that weren't there. As for the surname lists for these: AIKENS, BACCUS (BACKUS?), ETCHINSON (ETCHISON?), GLASSON, HARBUCK, HOWINGTON, JARREL (JARRELL?), LEMOND, LOCKLIN, MARCHMAN, MOBERLEY, SHELLNUT, & SUMMEROUR You can easily start your own mail lists for these. If you're interested, contact me & I'll help you get started! It'll be just a matter of days & it can be up & running. You can "advertise" on Walton list, too! I'm sure there are others that would "advertise" for you, as well as John FULLER's site. Ok, now let's all make sure we have our names in, spelled correctly, & get our queries posted. Yes, I know--"Practice what I preach!"??? well????? Love ya'll anyway, Momma Walton <>< PS Thanks for all your wonderful compliments, & support! It really keeps me going!!
Forgot to say to let me know when you make your query postings, so I can indicate this & folks can be on the look-out for yours! Thanks, <><
Hi all, I think I just finished adding all the surname links to GenConnect boards. Check it out! If your surname doesn't have a link, yet, that's because there's not a board for your surname. Don't worry, though, I've submitted them all, & should be notified before long of their availability. This usually doesn't take very long, & I'll notify ya'll when they're created. Now, I need for ya'll to add your queries, not only to the surname boards, but to our home page Walton County GenConnect Boards http://www.rootsweb.com/~gawalton/ If your surname is not there at all, it's probably because you haven't granted me permission to add it yet. Please go ahead & grant it to me, even if you think you already have, ok? Now, back to work--since Lindsey is napping! haha Love ya'll, Momma Walton <><
Ok, will try to explain the links to GenConnect surname boards: All that is required of you is to post your query to your particular surname board--which I haven't posted one yet (about my RHOADES) Or you could copy one from the archives--http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl type in gawalton, next page your surname. When a visitor comes to our site, looking for RHOADES, they could click on my surname, & see my query (IF I have one) plus all the other RHOADES researchers--for any area, any state. If they click on Genconnect on our home page, then they get all the surname queries for Walton County (GA) area only. Does this help to make things clearer? I'll try to post my query soon to both GenConnect Boards, & maybe that'll help too??? Also, it would help me if I get all spellings of your surname, so I can find the links to all boards. I also plan to state somewhere in this section (Surnames of Interest) if there's a mail list available for this surname. So far the votes have been 100% for putting these links on there, & I think it's a great idea too (of course!!haha) Are things clearer now? If not, I'll try again! Love to all, Momma Walton <><
Ok, where's all my help at??? I've only one "vote" as to whether linking to GenConnect boards is a good idea. Look at my RHOADES surname to see what I mean. http://www.rootsweb.com/~gawalton/Contents/surnames.html The, LET me know--please & thank you! Momma Walton <><
ok...am answering sunday's post on tues & asking where's my tues A.M. reply to...?...hopefully Tuesday's mail...lol...sorry.... Will try to read same day & to look at Date!
Say,if a cemetery is there can't or won't government make it a "historical" or "public access required area?" I studied law & seem to recall law pertaining to Private roads that lead to privately owned land are exempt from "tresspass" as long as they also lead to public land & as long as public stays on the paved surface untill out of private area & into the public or part not owned by owner of private road...duh!! where's a lawyer??? Too long ago but same deal as touists allowed to walk to beach via paths beside beach homes...
re: Dot Sorrels Cox's post: This Dot b.Ga BUT Moved to Florida when 6, left at 18 for S.C. then at 28 moved North & Still talk Southern if reminded "subconsciously, even" of South!!! i posted earlier to this list 2day,didn't i??? where's my post??? Answered mama walton's salt & pepper worries "from my point of view"...surely i didn't say anything rootsweb staff would "ban"?!?
Forgot these-- http://www.rootsweb.com/~gawalton/ or go directly http://www.rootsweb.com/~gawalton/Contents/surnames.html
Hi all, Had another idea that may help in our research. Let me know what you think, & if you want it, ok? Go to the "Surnames Of Interest" section, & look at how I did my RHOADES family. You can type in your queries (GenConnect) here too. If you type your queries in Walton Co. GenConnect, & under your surnames too, that'll just add more resources for you. Plus, anyone that looks at this page can click on the surname & go to the query board, & read your query, etc. I'll also send (tonight?), tips on how to post an effective?? query. Please let me know, as I can easily add these links. I'm leaving the "black" beside the cemeteries that I find listed this way. There haven't been any "No" votes, & I'm happy to do whatever the majority wants! I haven't finished the updates yet--surprised??? I should have them all done by Sunday??/ That's providing nothing else happens--hahahahahaha Just think--one day...some day........finished!!..unless Jesus comes back first!!! Love to all! Momma Walton <><
glad to see this post as been wondering! if my ancestor impregnated or got impregnated by...an african american,i want to inc that african american in my family & her or his relatives...blood is blood baby! how can we not?? but yes records should be coded just to help us all.. next question...how can we possibly know if african american has same name due to blood relation as opposed to fact of slavery being that sometimes our ancestors played God or king & decided to name slaves rather than allow their parents to do it?? plus some slaves & "owners" actually liked each other so african americans willingly took or gave themselves same names? so confusing!!! to me,racism is ridiculous in that in biblical times everyone enslaved anyone regardless of color as did ship captains in colonial eras if they found you drunk & needed crew!!! i was shocked to learn that my ancestors had slaves...shows how little i paid attention to history as a student!!! i felt england was only country guilty...that irish were done as wrong by english as africans were & that irish came here to late to be guilty...geez,i am learning a lot!!! not just genealogy but history,geography...
Linda & others, I don't believe Bettie meant to omit listing the cemeteries labeled "black" in Walton County but, rather, was concerned that some might find the designation of cemeteries by race as offensive. My suggestion to her was that, in sum, it's fact of history that cemeteries were (and hereabouts still are) largely associated with whites and blacks, and designating them as such is helpful to the researcher so, hopefully, because of that no one will take undue offense. As we locate cemeteries in the county it is our intent to designate them in any and all ways that might be helpful to potential researchers. We will be consulting with the funeral home here which caters to the African American community to insure we do not miss any burial sites known to them. We also expect to have help in our searches from African Americans in the community.
