3. Hi Becky, Is A.F. Shaw Arba F. Shaw? I don't know (as in I cannot right this minute prove it), but I think so. My suspicions are based on the following: 1) I have read MANY "local happenings" columns in the Walker County Messenger from the 1880s which (columns) were signed by A.F. Shaw. 2) According to Doris Hetzler's article "Cooper Heights" in Walker County Georgia Heritage 1833-1983, "... According to Arby Shaw, writing the Fricks Gap and later Cooper Heights news for the Walker County Messenger 1883 to 1905, ... "Arby Shaw, who wrote the news until he died in 1909, has two great grandchildren living there. They are Lucille Leath, Now Mrs. Rowland Strickland and Neal Leath." n.b. I do not have this book, but got the quotes from copies made for me by the wonderful Betty Johnson at the Cherokee Regional Library in Lafayette. 3) A.F. (Arby) in several of his columns refers to my ggg-grandaddy Joel as "Uncle Joe" and to ggg-grand(step)mother Sarah Shaw Fowler as "Aunt Sarah". Arba was son of William M. Shaw, who was the brother of Sarah Shaw Fowler, so Arba would have called Sarah "Aunt Sarah". 4) I have seen other family genealogies where Arby was used as a nickname for Arba. That isn't DNA-level proof, but it looks pretty good to me. If we could track Arby's great-grandkids and match them against Arba's, I'm thinking we could prove that both Arby and Arba are the same fellow. Are you researching the Shaw family? If so, go back to my website and read the story about Joel's Mare. Nice quote there from Harriet Shaw. Cheers... 3. Ken, Yes, I've been tracing the Shaw family for some time now. Arba F. Shaw is the son of William and Harriet Hardin Shaw. William is the son of Amos and Sarah Maxey Shaw, my gggg grandparents. I descend from William's brother, John "Jack" Newton and Rebecca Jackson Shaw.
