At one point, Murray County Georgia encompassed all the land in Walker, Murray, Whitfield, Catoosa and Dade counties. The legislature reportedly passed a bill that stated that the county seat could be no further away from the furthest point in any county than one day's ride by horseback! That is when Murray county was reportedly broken into the counties listed above. If my memory serves me correctly, I think this happened in 1833. Seems as though there is a book that is entitled Walker County, the first 150 years - 1833 to 1883 that gives a lot of historical info concerning the early days in Walker county. Parts of Walker County, GA was annexed in the 1800s and they are now parts of Whitfield, Dade, Catoosa and Chattooga and Murray Counties. Actually if my memory is correct, at one time all that area was part of Murray County so check there too.
