Delilah, I am a member of the Native American Indian Assoc. I am not registered federally though. Can you tell me what process it takes to get registered? The NAIA made me list my heritage back 5 generations and I am considered half Cherokee. My maternal Grandfather was 3/4 and maternal grandmother 1/2 and then you add my fathers side, making it very interesting. I am proud of everything I have learned about my heritage and I have found none to be ashamed of but the Cherokee Heritage is by far the most to be proud of to me. We have a newspaper that a friend of mine publishes every season called Native Spirit. I have my first article being placed in the issue coming up. I would love to get your address and send you a copy of the newspaper when it comes out. I did not start researching my tree in order to be able to Join DAR or the Winthorp's Society or anything of that nature. I wanted to know really, who I was and like you feel my ancestors talk to me, they give me something to keep me going, just when I about to give up and not try anymore. I am a granddaughter to the white man yes, and that matters, but I do consider myself a Native American. Linda Sue
If you will go the the Cherokee Nation web-site - you might have to join the mailing list - www.cherokee.org/ -(there are one 3 Cherokee tribes recognized by the Federal Gov., although there are a lot who claim Cherokee) but it has a link to genealogy and to the the application process - if you want I can send it to you if you don't want to join - in the Cherokee Nation, there is no requirement of blood percentage, if you can show a connection, the you should get your application admitted - I don't even want to join the DAR (although my mothers line goes back to the Rev. War), I would much rather claim my Cherokee Heritage, would love to get your newspaper - will put my addresss below - I have a poem that was published in The West Point News out of West Point, Ga., on July 12, 1934 - I found it while researching for a book on a church - I also subscribe to the Cherokee Phoenix, which is the official newspaper of the Cherokee Nation out of Tahlequah, OK - I am not ashamed of any of my native heritage, you do what you do to survive - you might also want to order a book called CHEROKEE PROUD, A Guide for Tracing and Honoring your Cherokee Ancestors, and also read THE TRAIL OF TEARS, The rise and fall of the Cherokee Nation, by John Ehle - CHEROKEE PRUOD is written by Tony Mack McClure, Ph.D. I ordered this from my Ancestry magazine- lots of interesting info in both - my address is below and I will look forward to receiving the newspaper, if there is a cost, let me know.
