Delilah - I have heard this custom was a name for each of the following: one name for the Church (usually a name from the Bible), one for the family (usually from the father's side) and the last one for the mother's side, one of the Godparents, or simply because it was a name they wanted to name the child. The names could be in any order, but the child was usually called by the favorite of the three, but was free to choose one of the other two if he/she wanted to do so. I believe this is still common in some other countries and not unusual in catholic families still. Personally, I like the idea.
