Hi Duke... That is Lookout Baptist Church. It is sort of confusing. To confuse it even more we have Lookout Cemetery which is across the road from the present location of Lookout Baptist Church (where your Williams, Parrish (and mine) are buried as well as Old Lookout Cemetery about 1 1/2 miles south. Sandy, This mention of Lookout Baptist Church, Walker County, was NOT located on Lookout Mountrain but rather at the foot of the mountain in the High Point area on Chattanooga Valley Rd (aka GA Hwy 193). It was organized ca 1848 and has changed location about 3 times since the original structure that was located about 1 1/2 miles south of the present location. The first structure was on property owned by Mrs. Dickey and the charter members were Rev. Dickey, Lemuel Carter and John Sammons, Deacons. In 1871 property was obtained from John Long (my 3rd gr-grandfather) for the purpose of building a new church and a cemetery. It was on the south side of the Old Lookout Cemetery. In 1912 a new structure was built on the present location about a mile north. A storm damaged this building and it was repaired. A few years ago, a new brick church was built beside the first one which was then torn down. The present structure is located across 193 from the Lookout Cemetery. I think they are members of the Southern Baptist Association but not sure nor do I know who would have the church records, if there are any. I believe my cousin was secretary at one time... I know she isn't now because of health problems. I'll try to remember to telephone her to find out if you are interested. My ggg grandad Hiram F. Golden lived in Walker County in the 1840's and married Lucy A. Ham there about 1847. Are there marriage records available about 1846-48? Hiram was on the 1850 census listed as a carpenter. He was listed at "East Armuchy". Where is/was that located in the county??? Hiram and Lucy's first child was William Anderson Golden b January 28, 1848 in Walker County. William and Hiram both joined the confederates after the attack on Chickamauga. How far away was this battle? Does anyone have information where the Golden's lived in Walker County prior to the civil war? Hiram's parents were Richard and Susie Owen-Golden. I understand that Richard and several of the Goldens left Georgia for Arkansas about 1850 and that Hiram and his new bride remained behind. Are there graves of any Goldens inventoried in Walker County? I would appreciate any insight on this family. Thanks Mike Golden

When I was in Lafayette, GA many years ago, I found mention of my GGGgf, John Sammons, in the "History of Walker county, Georgia" being a charter member or deacon in 1854 in Lookout Baptist Church, Walker County. At that time, I tried to find out more about the article and old church records. I wrote to The Lookout Mountain Baptist Church on 901 Scenic Highway, Lookout Mountain, Tennessee, which is located in Hamilton county TN (right next to Walker County, GA.) They did not know of any Baptist Churches in Walker County that are on Lookout Mountain, but gave me the address of another minister that might be able to help. I then have correspondence from a Rev. Al Davis of Coosa and Lookout Valley Baptist Association, P.O. Box 2025, Ft. Oglethorpe, Georgia 30741, who couldn't help me, but forwarded my original letter to Rev. Lee Robinson, Rt. #3, Box 602B, Chattanooga, TN 37409 in April 1981. Rev. Lee Robinson was Pastor of the Lookout Baptist Church at that time, but I never heard from him. I also have a cousin who is researching the Sammons line; he said he did find the church a few years back, but the current minister would not share the information with my cousin, who is also a minister. If you find some information, Kathleen, I'd sure like to learn more, too. You and I are related through the Smith line. Thanks. Thanks Rev. Joe!
Kathleen, The Baptist are and were not known for keeping (what we would term good genealogical) records. Their records mainly consist of just the minutes of the business meetings and who join and when. Some older Baptist churches did record when a member was being punished for something such as drinking, adulty or other behavior they termed "not christian". The trick is finding these records as they were usually kept by the clerk or whoever recorded them and did not stay with the church. Right off, (and someone correct me if I'm wrong), but I don't remember seeing any Baptist Churches here in the Walker area on Lookout Mountain. There are several now, Ascolon, Lookout Mountain, the Baptist church at the top of the mountain at the intersection of Nick-a-jack and Lula Lake Rd., Hinkle and a couple of others, but none earlier that I can recall. One of the oldest churches here was the Mount Pleasant Methodist Episcopal South. However, it has been gone for a number of years. Payne's Chapel is another older Methodist Church and is still here. I'm sorry this is not much help. Hi Sandy. It is this Smith Line, Priscilla Smith who married William Stout and who is in the records of the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. I am sure you know this, but this is the church that was located in the area of the Now Roach Cemetery in Hamil. Priscilla was living in Walker Co., GA in 1850 and William Stout was living in Hamilton Co., TN in 1850. ??????? Until 1784 in US (much later in Britian) the Methodists were group within the Anglican church. After independence, the Anglican church didn't work in US any more (King George was the head of the church as well). The "mainline" Anglicans became the Episcopal Church in America. The Methodists didn't exactly fit in there either, so in 1784, they formed thier own separate church at the "Christmas Conference" in Baltimore. Methodist Church grew exponetially from there. I know that my Wallin string in Walker County GA where Methodist. My Grandmother told me that her mother was of Baptist faith as had been all the Parrish for some time but her father Julius Wallin was raised Methodist and his father also. I wish someone who know more about this faith could give us some insight. Due to Thomas Wallin being born in Mass. I know that he was a Puritan as no other religion was allowed in New England during that time. Was this why our Thomas left MA. and went to Rhode Island and New Jersey? I have been researching lately about one Nehemiah Abbot who was a grandson to our Daniel Abbot and his being accused of being a witch during the Salem Witch Trials. Did our Wallins and other families leave the area and become part of a group that started the Methodist faith? Or was it already started and they went to join it. One thing is for sure they left because the Puritan laws where unbearable.
