yes but it was also done with assurance that what was on rootsweb would remain free. Also what was place in USGenWeb archives was supposed to be hosted by rootsweb not owned by rootsweb! I am an ancestry member too but it is not a my organization right or wrong issue but what is fair. ----- Original Message ----- From: diamond6468@mindspring.com To: GAWALKER-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, June 22, 2001 5:52 PM Subject: Re: [GAWALKER] Good News Walker County Georgia That is correct, since Ancestry bought Rootsweb, it now has acquired the GenWeb project and it was a membership databank, so I believe that it will now include all the main links - I have belonged to Ancestry since it started - delilah evans At 15:13 6/22/01 EDT, you wrote: >In a message dated 6/22/01 2:51:01 PM Eastern Daylight Time, >bclody@charter.net writes: > ><< Actually there is one set that is not at the moment. This morning I finished putting the last of the 1900 Census Index files on the New Walker County Georgia site at http://www.rootsweb.com/~gawalker/index.html This basically finishes the restoration of this site to the state that Sherry Osburn had gotten it two approximately 2 years ago. As far as I know all of the links on the site are now functional(please let me know if you find ones that are not) Actually there is one set that is not at the moment. And something that this site currently shares with virtually all of the USGenWeb/GaGenWeb sites. All of the GenConnect message board were abruptly moved onto the Ancestry site. We are all trying to find out now what is going on. So if you click one of those links and it doesn't work - you can skip letting me know. They will be fixed ASAP. Anyway the main thing is that the site is really (and myself include) ready to move on to new business. I have some additional cemetery entry information that several Kind souls have forwarded and that will be going up as soon as I figure out whether to add it to what exists or add a supplement page for the particular cemeteries involved. So I guess in part I am soliciting anything that anyone wishes to contribute, add to or have corrections done on. I will always be searching for truth(that is what this is all about isn't it). So if you know of data or information on the site which you believe to be in error please don't hesitate to bring it to my attention - that doesn't mean that I may not hold your feet to the fire as to sources of data and accuracy but please send what you have to share. The Genconnect Boards as they were are no more. They have been combined with other boards and moved to http://boards.ancestry.com/ I will try to update all my pages as soon as possible. If the page still has the puzzle pieces on it click on query and you should reach the message boards to read them. To post, you will have to register. I have been granted admin status on the boards but am unable to reach an admin page that will let me do anything at this time. Linda Sue, I don't know from where you are traveling... I'll give them from Chattanooga then if you are somewhere else, e-mail privately and I'll give them from your neck of the woods. Do you know how to get to the Incline in St. Elmo? If you do, continue south on St. Elmo Ave for about 3 miles. You will cross the TN/GA line and will be on GA Hwy 193. Continue south on Hwy 193 about 5 miles. About 1/2 mile after you cross the rail road tracks the second time, watch for Nick-a-jack Rd which is a right turn. Turn right onto Nick-a-jack Rd and continue until you get to the top of Lookout Mountain. Turn left onto GA Hwy 157 and travel south about 4 miles. Watch for Durham Rd which will turn left. Do NOT turn here but continue for another mile(?). You will pass a brick church, Church of God, on the left; then a metal building which used to be the Mt. Pleasant fire hall. The drive-way to the Mt. Pleasant Community Center will be on the south side of this metal building on the left side of the highway. The Community sits off the road on a small hill. If you get to the old Gillen School which is now a Baptist Church, you have gone too far... back up. If you are coming from the LaFayette area, travel west on GA 136 toward Trenton. When you get to the top of Lookout Mountain, turn right onto GA Hwy 157. The community center will be about 5 miles north past the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, old Gillen School, then on the right. Living here, I never pay any attention to exact mileage. If you need more info, let me know. Sue............Give me directions! I want to come really bad! Hope you are feeling good! oxoxox Linda Sue
Sorry to be late posting this but for those of you who have asked, the Durham Mines annual reunion will be this Sunday, June 24th, at the Mount Pleasant Community Center on Lookout Mountain, GA Highway 157, Walker Co. Bring a covered dish if possible. I know that is hard to do for you out-of-towners. If you can't bring a covered dish, bring soft drinks or paper products or chips or whatever is handy. If that isn't possible, come on anyway!!! They usually start eating around 1:00 p.m. (eastern time) after church is out. If anyone needs directions to the community center, let me know and I'll post them for you. Or if you need more info, let me know. Sue Forrester

Here is another one of those great map sites. This one is for the U.S. Census and shows how the counties changed shape from census year to census year. I found it very interesting. http://www.segenealogy.com/sgo03_ar.htm Kathleen Burnett List Mom

Hey can I have a link to site? Thanks Linda Sue
Just a brief announcement to the list! All of the links in The Walker County Marriage Index (both Brides and Grooms Index) now should be in working order on the new cite. This also means that I am beginning work on the 1900 census index information on the site. This will be the last link in restoring the site to what Sherry Osburn originally had on the site and will mean that shortly we will be able to start adding new stuff to the site. Benton Fletcher has already emailed me that he has more up to date transcriptions to add to the marriage index and that will be added just as soon as the time is available. I would like to thank all past contributors to the site and extend an invitation to all to send me stuff you would like to see on the site. All contributions of information will be gratefully appreciated. Bill Clody Walker County Georgia County Coordinator, GaGenWeb
