from the Opelika-Auburn News, dated Tuesday, April 17, 2001, p 6A - this newspaper is out of Opelika, Lee County, Alabama: JAMES ROBERT LEATH James Robert Leath, age 64, of Auburn, passed away Friday, April 13, 2001, at East Alabama Medical Center. Momorial services were held Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at 10:00 a.m. at the Auburn Methodist Founders Chapel. He is survived by his wife, Florine Estes Leath; a son, James (Jimmy) Leath of Mobile, a brother Ray Leath of Rossville, Georgia. He was a native of Cherokee County, the son of the late John and Evelyn Ray Leath. He was a retired Poastmaster and a member of the Auburn United Methodist Church. ------------------ anyone wanting any follow-up info, i.e. marriage license, etc. write me. BTW, the hospital is in Opelika, Lee County, Alabama, the church is in Auburn, Lee County, ALabama - it doesn't list a cemetary, but if he was buried in Auburn, it was Memorial Cemetary off East Samford Avenue. The only funeral homes are in Opelika, none are in Auburn. delilah evans
Delilah, I don't have a web site. I am trying to build one for the Dade County Historical Society but I'm having a heck of a time trying to figure out how to do some of it. Thank you for the lookup offer, Delilah. Could you please look for the brothers, Benjamin and Joseph Wilson? In 1850 they were in Walker Co., GA. They did not show up in their father's 1860 census in Catoosa Co., but they would have been 29 and 22 years old at that time. I have not been able to find them after 1850 and thought they might have been killed during the war. Here is a link to check out for all of you who are researching an ancestor who fought in the civil war. http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/ It is a national registry of civil war soldiers and sailors and is maintained by the National Parks Service. They are slowly but surely indexing the battlefield cemetery parks. The first one is up and is Poplar Grove at Petersburg National Battlefield. I intend to place a link on the Walker County site to make it easy to get to. I haven't tried it yet, but I suspect that the "membership" required to reply to messages might be a FREE one. I can't imagine them making anyone pay for that. My Family.com is a FREE site, I believe. All of the USGW data should still be FREE but as to "ownership" of the archived information, I am as confused as anyone. Some county coordinators also seem at a loss as to exactly who "owns" what on their sites and in their archives. If you have doubts, ask for clarification of ownership rights before submitting any data you wish to maintain the rights to. I do resent having to give my credit card # for a "FREE" trial of anything and never do it. I have had a membership in Ancestry in the past and felt I got my money's worth, mostly from the magazine as I found very little in their on-line databases to help me. I got a great deal more out of my membership in Genealogy Library.com and my membership there has only lapsed due to my recent lay off from my 14 year old position. I also don't like automatic renewals. GL.com and, I believe, Ancestry are both doing this now and I do not like it. My only on-line membership at the moment is to Heritage Books' on-line library (I subscribed before my lay-off) which is very nice and certainly worth its low price; but it has no search engine except for titles (you must look at each book for an index of names). I recommend you use Ancestry's search and then determine by its results, whether it may be useful to you. I highly recommend these excellant on-line libraries which are FREE and will probably remain so: The Library of Virginia - Look at the excellant Digital Collections http://www.lva.lib.va.us/ The Making of America - University of Michigan http://moa.umdl.umich.edu/ The Making of America - Cornell University, Includes "The War of the Rebellion" and other digital collections. http://cdl.library.cornell.edu/ Barbara bribling@mail.datasys.net

Not only that, but the 14 day "free trial" only works for the first day. When I tried to go back on the 2nd day, it wouldn't work! I emailed them and told them to cancel my "free membership." They emailed back and said this could only be done over the phone. I called their 800 number and was told they couldn't do anything for me, their system was down. This is beginning to sound like a scam to me. **TANTAFL** Somebody's got to pay the freight... If you go to the public library and do research "for free" the taxpayers of the local municipality/county are paying for the books, for the lights, airconditioning, librarian salaries, etc. At the FHL the LDS church pays from contributions by members. MyFamily Inc has said that they will keep the rootsweb stuff "free" so far they haven't gone back on their word. Even the subscriber only stuff at ancestry.com is quite reasonable considering the cost of servers and salaries for programmers and other staff (cost which must support rootsweb as well). At least they are not like some sites that charge $20 and up PER DATABASE. -----Original Message----- From: Wanda Irby [mailto:wanda@cyberstation.net] Sent: Sunday, June 24, 2001 12:37 AM To: BOARDS-ADMINS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [BD-ADM] Nancy and Joan [snip] NO ONE SEEMS TO CARE THAT WE WANT TO KEEP HELPING RESEARCHERS NOT ANCESTRY... Y'all know where you sign up for Ancestry.com for a 14-day free trial. I was going to sign up for that and it asked for my credit card number. I clicked off that site and will never try to sign up for any kind of free access just so they can have my creditcard number. All our free genealogy information we use to get online is beginning to be a rip off since so many people are into genealogy, they are all trying to get rich NOW!. I don't think this is right! Bonnie
PLEASE. Let's give Ancestry.com a break. There is a lot of free information on their site, but I decided to sign up for more information over 2 years ago, and have received so much valuable information. I feel the price is very fair, considering the price of gasoline and postage stamps. Don't knock it 'til you try it. Helen in Texas ----- Original Message ----- From: "K.
