I am LDS and I am a librarian in our FHC so, I guess I will answer this question. The Ancestral File and the Pedigree Resource file is compiled solely from information sent in by patrons. They come from people who are LDS and those who are not but, want their genealogy recorded someplace. They can be good resources as a place to start but, I always tell people to confirm any info taken from these sources. They are only as good as the research of the person who submitted it. I always tell people the same thing about information gleaned from the internet. Check other sources. Sometimes info is listed as coming from family sources. These can't always be confirmed so, it then becomes gut feelings and best guesses. The church does not do research for people nor do they have the manpower to double check the files that come into them. So unfortunately, things are put out by people who have it wrong or backwards or whatever. Just take it for what it is. Someone elses research. Hope this helps. I will be glad to answer any other questions. Anne >Juanita got her records from the LDS library, so everyone out there should >beware! She's gotten alot of wrong information on this family from LDS... >there are several incorrect dates for this particular family (and Alice's >brothers & sisters ) in the LDS information. Does anyone know where LDS gets >those family files... the ones that are already put together? > Sheila
OOPS..... P.S. I meant to say Alice's BROTHER Harvey, her brother Johnny, and her sister Becky Haney Grant. Not sure exactly what I wrote. I get the children of Alice confused with her brothers & sisters sometimes!!! Hope that's straightened this out!!! Did I say anything else that didn't make sense????? Alice, by the way, married a Holcomb, so when she was raising her children in Chickamauga, they were HOLCOMB. Grover Haney was Grandma Alice Holcomb's first son. He was born out of wedlock before she married John. He died in S. Pittsburg, TN & most of his children moved to Oklahoma. His last surviving child Ruby is still living there in Chickasha or something like that, near Oklahoma City. Sheila
This doesn't pertain to Harvey, but to Harry Haney (a generation earlier), but Harry lived in Chickamauga. There's a picture of his house that I got from the TVA files. Now back to Harvey... I actually was mistaken... he was living in Eagle Clift when Alice Haney, his mother, died. That was in 1872. Is that Walker or Dade? Alice's daughter Becky Haney Grant was living in Chickamauga. And her son John was in Gadsden. The obit says Harry, but I was sure it meant Harvey, since I know he was still living at the time. I also have some entries from her family Bible. My aunt Polly in Ft. Oglethorpe has the orginal. Alice Haney married John Holcomb and they raised their children in Chickamauga. So, the reason you aren't finding these Haneys is that you've been looking at earlier census records. Hezekiah lived in Walker Co. & is in one of the census records I found... he was in the only house in the Cove Rd. (or is there an Old Cove Rd) area... and he is alone in the house. I don't know which year that was, but I copied it in my notes... would be either 1880, 1900, or 1910 because that's all I've seen, aside from the 1850. My aunt copied earlier census records & marriages of Haneys & I've got some of her notes as well. There are a couple of Haneys in the 1850 Walker Co. census, I believe in Cedar Grove. One is a Haney child, a girl of about 12 years old... and there's a young man, can't think which one, in the same record. About the obit, I have a scanned copy of the obituary if you'd like a copy. I'm not sure what paper it is from, my aunt had it in her stack of papers. Again, it says Harry, not Harvey... but Harvey is the right son I'm sure. Sheila
Hi, This message to the Walker County List pertains to the Surnames List maintained on the Walker County Site at http://www.rootsweb.com/~gawalker/. I have sent email to about a third of the names on the current Walker County Surname list in an attempt to purge dead links in the list. I need to hear back from the following people if you subscribe to this list with a good/new email link or your names will be deleted from the list because messages sent to your current link in the list bounced back as undeliverable. Sheila, I'm not trying to butt in but when was Harvey in the Flintstone (Chickamauga) area? I'm from the Chattanooga Valley area (which includes Flintstone) originally. Some of my ancestors were in the valley before 1850 and I've read and re-read the censuses. I don't remember seeing a Hanney... then I wasn't looking for them either. I know there has to be some accurate files in the LDS family history files. However, I've yet to see one. Some information was sent in by someone else on my family a couple of years ago which is WRONG. I'm not the person who sent it in and therefore, can not correct it. So, I know individuals send in files. Several years ago, I came across a family history file that contained infomation on my Hanson ancestors. The lady who sent the file in quoted family Bible records. Her family Bible records had different dates from one that we had access to so I tried to locate her. I chased her from South Carolina to two different places in Mississippi. I was two weeks late in catching up with her in Mississippi and couldn't find her after that. The odd thing is, the local LDS library in Chattanooga ordered this file from Salt Lake City. The whoevers there sent back that the file could no longer be located. The original records they have microfilmed are wonderful. The family history files should be treated as we treat censuses... very carefully with the knowledge they contain errors. That's my two cents. Thanks so much Bill. This is a good one. Thanks so much. This helps with my puzzle. The only time I see a mention of Harry is in Alice's obit, but I believe it was meant to be Harvy. I have only Harvey in the family Bible records, and I never see a reference to a twin. However, cousin Juanita in Alabama insists that there was a twin Harry. If this Harry existed, he should be in that census record unless, as you say, he died. BUT, if he died he wouldn't be in Alice's obit as a surviving son. Also, I know Harvey was alive in Flintstone or Chickamauga area when Alice died, but he isn't in her obit. There is a Harry Haney related to the family, but he is older. Juanita got her records from the LDS library, so everyone out there should beware! She's gotten alot of wrong information on this family from LDS... there are several incorrect dates for this particular family (and Alice's brothers & sisters ) in the LDS information. Does anyone know where LDS gets those family files... the ones that are already put together? Sheila
thanks Sue :) Sheila
Thanks Sue. I have only Harvery in my data, but another cousin insists he had a twin named Harry b. abt. 1878 or 79. I found the family later, but no Harry. Sheila
Sorry, forget my reply... I should have checked all messages first. Sheila, some of this Haney family went to Jackson Co AL. Jourden was in his mother's household in Dade Co 1850 census. They were in Marion Co TN 1860. Gracy goes to Jackson Co AL but Jourden, Mary, and two of Jourden's sister are back in Dade Co on the 1870 census. Jourden and Mary are on the 1880 Dade Census. Hope this helps but it doesn't show twins just Harvey. Maybe one died early or something but the combination of Jourdon and Mary in Dade county is fairly compelling unless you know the ages to be wrong or something else. If it is them it is interesting because you pickup her maiden name by virtue of the father-in-law in the household. Delilah, There is a Walker County [GA] Historical Society based out of the Cherokee Regional/Walker Co Library in La Fayette. Clayton Bell is the president and I think he gets these messages. There isn't a Walker County [GA] Genealogical Society. Delta Genealogical Society covers Walker. I'm corresponding secretary and nothing has come in to us in the way of photographs. Sue PS... To All We all have by now found our relatives during our research that was either on the side of the Union or Confederate, and some served on both sides. And with the recent discussion about the Civil War I felt that this may be of interest to all. This I found in the Veteran Press Titled T*A*P*S. Here is the words of TAPS, and if you look on the internet there is a very interesting history behind it. It goes back to 1862 when one night Union Army Captain heard the moans of a solider who lay mortally wounded on the field, not knowing if it were a Union or Confederate solider. He crawled out, risking his own life in a firefight, and dragging the wounded boy back to his lines. When he reached them he found it was actually a Confederate solider, dead now. When he turned him over in a lantern's light he saw the face of his own son. he army band could give only one musician for the military burial, a bugler. The captain asked him to play a series of notes he had found in the pocket of his dead son. Thus was born the haunting melody we now know as TAPS, used in all military funerals for these many years. Hear are the words the Captain wrote: Day is done gone the sun from the lakes from the hills from the sky all is well safely rest God is high. Fading light dims the sight and a star gems the night gleaming bright from afar drawing nigh falls the night. Thanks and praise for our days neath the sun neath the stars as we go this we know GOD IS NIGH. Happy 4th July! Thanks, Terry

Dear List Members, Here it is the end June and time for the Second Quarterly Report for 2001. Can you believe how fast the time has passed? This one almost passed me by. The GAWALKER Mailing List has 171 members, 132 on the Regular list and there are 39 members on the Digest List. As most of you know by now, the GenConnect Boards have changed. Rootsweb.com and Ancestry.com are continuing their merger and now have merged the GenConnect Boards. I am not sure of my feeling regarding this yet, but will watch it and let you know. I am not one to jump to conclusions quickly. I also take care of many GenConnect Boards and did loose all of them in which I did not take care of the Query board due all the boards, bios, wills, pensions, etc. being combined within the Query board. If you used one of these boards, now you know why I suddenly disappeared. I know many of you have concerns regarding copyright laws and the information you post to the boards and the mailing lists. The following was posted by Rootsweb Management. "When you post messages to mailing lists, message boards, and other facilities at RootsWeb, those posts remain your property under copyright law." The same is true for those using the message boards at Ancestry.com. In short, if you posted it, you own it." If you are interested in knowing about other mailing list out there, one of the very best inventories of genealogical mailing lists is John Fullers Genealogy Resources on the Internet located at http://www.rootsweb.com/~jfuller/gen_mail.html If you ever need to unsubscribe from this list or any rootsweb list all you need to do is visit Password Central located at http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ Follow the instructions and you will received an e-mail of all lists you belong to and from it you can unsubscribe from the ones you want to. Always know that I will be more than happy to help you if you are having problems unsubscribing, you only need to ask. If you would like to visit the Archived messages of this list, go to http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ and type in the name of the list you would like to search. Please remember, so that this list is better for each of us, the posting of virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, political announcements, current events, items for sale, personal messages, flames, etc., in other words Spam is NOT ALLOWED and will be grounds for removal. Consideration for exceptions, contact me at KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net There are a few items I would like to suggest for the benefit of each of us. 1. If someone posts a message to the list that should not have been posted, please just delete it. Know that I am taking care of the problem. If you post your unhappiness, then you just continue on the problem. I know it is hard when your heart has been offended, but for my sake, and the sake of the list, please just delete it. Rootsweb has a wonderful Spam Detective and it stops most of it. You should see what comes across my screen. I have to look at each of them to make sure that what was stopped was truly Spam. Once in a while, one slips by though and if this happens, just delete it and go on with what we all love, genealogical research. 2. If you would put the subject of your posting in the subject line it might give you a better chance to attract the attention of someone who has the information you are looking for or the attention of someone who is searching for the information you are posting. 3. Please remember to delete the tags and un-needed words when you re-send a message to the list with your answer. If you don't check this, your responses can become quite large and may cause problems with some of our member's servers. This member who might not be able to receive your message because of its size, just might be your long lost second cousin with all the answers you are looking for. 4. The wonderful relationship that develops between list members is also one of a Mailing Lists Problems. I encourage you to respond to the entire list with genealogical responses, you never know who your response will help. In the same thought I would like to ask you to not respond to the entire list with personal responses. Such as, the first message from a member says "Happy Birthday Mary" and then Mary says "Thank you and then about 60 of our members also send "Happy Birthday Mary". This is what I mean by personal messages. Just keep in mind anything is ok to be posted as long as it has to do with the subject of the list. If you have a doubt ask me. KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net 5. Remember to keep your Virus protection up to date and never open any attached file unless you are 100% sure what it is and even then you are taking a chance. I want to thank each of you for your continued support of me and your willingness to help make this list the success it is. Kathleen Burnett List Mom KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net
