My husband's ggrandmother was Mary Elizabeth Hicks, born 26 Mar 1863, Galconda, Pope, IL. Daughter of Charles Edward Hicks, born 1828 Smith, TN and Roena Mitchell, born 1830, TN. The family has always been told that she descended from Andrew Jackson. Supposedly his widowed mother married a member of the Hicks family when he was about 8 years old. Do you know if this is accurate? ----- Original Message ----- From: <e.hollifield@att.net> To: <GAWALKER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, July 08, 2001 4:00 PM Subject: [GAWALKER] Hicks from Walker Co. > I wanted to let everyone who is a decendant of Andrew > Jackson & Sarah Brickey that there is going to be a > Hicks -Flinn reunion in Sevierville July 21 in > Sevierville Tn. at the American Legion Hall.It starts at > 11:30 am and ends ?. > This Hicks family are the decendants of Abraham brother > of Andrew. > Elsie > > PS. I am still searching for Horatio/Horotio Gower, b. 1809 N.C. & Leah McCarty, b. 11 Sept 1819 GA. Married about 1836, probably in GA. Two children were shown in 1840 census from Habersham Co. GA. In 1850 census they were in W. Chicamauga, Walker Co. GA with 7 children. 1860 census has them in Pond Spring, Walker Co GA with 10 children. They went to Taney Co. MO where Horatio/Horotio died in 1869. Leah died there in 1897. My question is...are there possible birth records for their children born in GA? Would they be in the County Offices or sent to the State? Any help will be appreciated. I have hit a brick wall with this man and would love to find out more about him. Thanks. Jan

Hello to all in Walker County. It has been quite a while since I last posted my information on this message board, so I'll try it again. Maybe I'll get lucky............. Frederick [or Fredric or ?] WHITE b. abt 1842 in Tn d. abt 1892 Scott Co Ar married Mary Ann Bird Dec 13-1866 in Catoosa Co Ga Mary Ann Bird b. Sep 1840 also in Tn d. about 1905 in Scott Co Ar [she may have been full or part American Indian] They had two daughters somewhere in Ga before they moved west to Ar I find them in the 1880 Scott Co Ar census and then in the 1900 census, Frederick is not listed. From the stories we have, he died about 1892 from tuburculosis. He was in the CSA army but we don't know whether or not he enlisted in Tn. Children: Nancy Elizabeth White b. 1868 in Ga d. unknown [m. unknown] Mary Jane White b. Sep 26-1869 in Ga d. Jan 19-1929 Hamlin, Jones Co Tx [m. Elijah Samuel Russell Jr Jul 13-1884 Waldron, Scott Co Ar] Francis Mannie White b. Feb 1875 Scott Co Ar d. unknown [m. Henry King] Johw W. White b. Aug 1880 in Waldron Ar d. unknown [m. Estel unknown] We are searching for information that will tie either Frederick White or Mary Ann Bird to their parents or siblings! Shelia said that there are many Birds [Byrds] in the cemeteries in Walker Co but unless we can find some way to find a name of her father or mother, the names alone will not make a connection. Thanks for reading, Freddie B Stewart in Charlton Massachusetts
By the way, did not find John Johnston in either cemetery book..... Ok.... I spent the night flipping through cemetery books lol... and here's what I found (keeping my eyes open for ALMOND, etc. in ANY part of a name). Hope I found somebody you recognize!: Sheila Chickamauga Cemetery: Almond D. Roberts April 7, 1913 Mattie A. Allmon (no dates) District Hill Cemetery (S. of Chickamauga on Hwy. 341): Walter Allmond 1920s (information was guessed at for graves in this cemetery) LaFayette Cemetery: J. D. Do you mind sharing the James Holcomb one? I think it might be my mom's cousin Jimmy. Sheila
That's sweet Freddie :) Thanks for appreciating the efforts of others! The way I see it, we're all helping each other here. Sheila p.s. Good luck with your Birds & Whites! By the way there are several Byrds & Birds in the area cemeteries. When I was looking for some names tonight, I saw alot of them in Rock Springs Cemetery.
Hi Shelia, I read with great interest, your repeated look-ups for folks on the Walker Co Ga lisy. You found my Fredrick H White married to my Mary Ann Bird on Dec 13-1866 in Catoosa Co Ga a couple of months ago! I really appreciate your efforts. I read this morning your listings on "Bailey's" in various cemeteries. I didn't know that there was a "White Family Cemetery" in the County! I don't know the parents of Fredrick or Frederick White but perhaps some of his relations had that name as first or middle? Yeh......a long short huh? My Frederick died in Scott Co Ar in 1842 and Mary Ann died there also in 1905. Thanks Shelia........you sure do nice work for folks!!!!!!!!! Freddie B Stewart in Massachusetts

Sure, but the index in vol. 1 is awful... will be easy to check vol. 2, then I'll put the note inside vol. 1 & when I'm going through, I'll dig for those names.. Sheila
Shelia, could you check for Mattie B. Jones Allman, or Almon Glenn and George Walker? Thank you
Shelia, would you see if you have any Allman's or Almond's listed. Thank you
Someone asked about this guy too... John Johnstone who died in Walker 1947 is not in volume 2. Sheila
Someone asked for Bailey look-ups, but I don't know who it was... so here are the Baileys I found in Walker Co. Cemeteries, Volume 2. Hope this helps.
