By any chance is there a Horatio Gower family on the map? They were in W. Chickamauga in 1850 census and Pond Spring in 1860. I don't know where Pond Spring is, but in one family story it tells that the fighting got close and they left. The family consisted of Horatio, wife Leah, and 11 children. I realize this is a long shot, but I am struggling with these people. Thanks. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Beverly Forrester" <deerrun@mindspring.com> To: <GAWALKER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, July 12, 2001 1:51 PM Subject: [GAWALKER] Vittetoe and Viniard - Chickamauga Park > Delta Genealogical Society has a map RESIDENTS OF THE CHICKAMAUGA BATTLEFIELD that sells for $2.00. I've just remembered something else - there is something about a Vineyard Road in the park or just east of it - Catoosa Co. now. You need to get a map of the area to check it out. S. Betts
Near the Chickamauga Battlefield there was a family named Viditoe - not sure of the spelling. There is still a road there by the family name. I know they raised fruit - apples, peaches, etc., and there were people by that name there as late as the 1950's I think. This would be on the Walker County side of the park. S. Betts

Hello, I am new to the list and am hoping to make contact with others researching my family line. My GGG-Grandparents were Tabler Christian and Anna Haddox VINEYARD (Vinyard, Viniard), both born about 1816-1820 in TN. They are listed as a couple on the 1850 and 1860 Walker County census, and then just Anna Viniard is listed living next door to daughter, GG-Grandmother Matilda (and her husband Andrew Collins/Collvins) in the 1870 Catoosa County census. Family tradition and my initial research indicates their family home and fields were the front line for the Battle of Chickamauga. Son James Vineyard served with the 39th GA Infantry, was captured at Resaca, GA, and died in the Union POW Camp at Alton, IL. I am searching for any additional information, and I am happy to share any pictures and information that I have. Thank you very much. Cathy

I know this son was by her as Mary was murdered around 1785. Jesse married Cassandra ? (possible second wife and he had children by 1st that I do not have info on). They had a son Jesse born 1855 which would have been very late in life for him but Cassandra was born in 1825 so I feel he had more children by a first wife and they are not discovered yet. Second, no one knows for sure yet that John's first wife was Mary Roberts but so far all other leads have failed. I do know from my family bible records that I descend from William, a son of John Walling and his first wife. The story of her being scalped and murdered was handed down through all the generations to me and it was confirmed by the letter that was written by Joseph Martin to the then Governor Patrick Henry on March 26, 1785 {I have enclosed a letter from Ellis Harlin, who just returning from Chickamauga on the 17th instant a party of Indians came to the house of John Wallin, scalped and killed his wife about 15 miles from my station in Powell's Valley and I further expect every hour to hear the people there are all murdered. } As far as I have been able to find my William only had one other sibling from that marriage an Elisha. The son Jesse, that I mentioned earlier went with his nephew Campbell to Marion/Hamilton County, TN area and it is there on Walden's Ridge (now Signal Mountain) that John Wallen was murdered by Indians. After that occurrence they went to walker County, GA where they settled in the McClemore's Cove area at the foot of Pigeon Mountain. I am confident in this information as the history of it is well documented here in TN. ( I now live in Nashville). I hope I have helped a little anyway Linda Sue Descendent of: Elisha I, John, William, Campbell, Joseph, Julius, Mary Wallin ============================== Visit Ancestry.com for a FREE 14-Day Trial and enjoy access to the #1 Source for Family History Online. I found John Mark JOHNSTON born 29 Nov 1855 died Aug 1880, unmarried son of Joshua Park JOHNSTON the second and Elizabeth Ann HOOD married in the 1840's. This information is from the Walker County Georgia Heritage Book 1833-1983. Most of this family was buried in the Johnston Cemetery on his property. Since I did not read the earlier messages, I do not know if this will help you any. Thank you for data on Walker Co records--I think you have answered why I have not found my John-Joseph- Joseph Martin trio--my Iron Curtain! John Martin, b c l770 Burke Co NC had two sons, born in Burke Co, but lived in and died in Walker Co, c l846. Joseph drowned in the Chicamauga River in Walker Co c l846. He was married to Mary E Hunt--and had eight children In l850 they are on the Murray Co census. This Joseph Martin, my gg grandfather, fathered Joseph Walker Martin, b abt l835, in Mecklinburg Co. He md sucessively two Moose sisters--Margaret Adelaide Moose, then her sister Mary Jane Moose my great grandmother. in Macon Co NC. {This marriage is in the NC marriage book} This lost JOHN MARTIN is reported to be the John Martin of Murray Co. I have the Murray Co History book, but have not been able to connect these two JOHN'S. Do you have anything in your files about this family--I think I need just one link to finiah my Martin's. I'm 8l yrs old now, born in Lumpkin Co GA, just hoping to complete this chart. Joseph Walker Martin had Jacob Esco Martin b l868 in Macon Co NC, md to Tabitha Drucilla Postell in Suckes Union Co Ga. If any of this sounds familiar, please let me know. ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! My question is...are there possible birth records for their children born in GA? Would they be in the County Offices or sent to the State? Any help will be appreciated. I have hit a brick wall with this man and would love to find out more about him. Thanks. Janet, Georgia birth and death records were not required until 1919. Some areas in Atlanta and Savannah (I understand) had them before 1919... don't know how far back they would go. However, Walker Co is over 100 miles north of Atlanta. These records were not kept on the county level either before 1919. Also, the Walker County courthouse burned 8 Feb 1883, so if there had been any kept by the county they would have been destroyed. Maybe someone who sees this message might be researching the same family and can help. Sure hope so. Married about 1836, probably in GA. Two children were shown in 1840 census from Habersham Co. GA. In 1850 census they were in W. Chicamauga, Walker Co. GA with 7 children. 1860 census has them in Pond Spring, Walker Co GA with 10 children. They went to Taney Co. MO where Horatio/Horotio died in 1869. Leah died there in 1897.
