    2. Linda Sue, why don't you just post any comments you have concerning anything about the book to the list, whether it be after I send out something or not - you can explain the names (all I have are the names and names of places) so you could tell who they are and what your relationship is and answer any question anyone may have - if anyone has questions, please post them to the list and that way, everyone will get all the information and Linda who is much more qualified than myself can help more people tha just any questions I may have - delilah evans At 22:18 7/31/01 EDT, you wrote: >Delilah, > >I do not mind you sending to the list at all. Almost every school lasted only four months, never over six months. One teacher, one pot-bellied stove sitting in the middle of the room fired with wood the children's dads had cut and hauled to the school without pay. My first school was called Gerrets Chapel. One room, one teacher, sisty children, a few in every grade from the first to the eighth. 1. [GAWALKER] James M. Smith - b. about 1809 GA or TN
    2. Kathleen Burnett
    3. Dear List Members, My head is getting bruised from banging it against my Smith brick wall. This has been going on for years and I don't seem to be making a dent. Thought I would again send out a query and see if anyone has run across this Smith Line. I first found James Middleton Smith in Hamilton Co., TN in the 1830 U.S. Census, with what seems his new bride in the house hold. (Susan Wallen b 1809 in Lee Co., VA) There are no children in the home. Living close to him was a Charles Smith U.S. Census 1830 Hamilton Co., TN - 10000001-0000001. In 1850 James and Susan are living at Lookout Mountain, Walker Co., GA with their family, as well as a Littleton Smith who I am guessing is a brother due to the fact Littleton and family will migrate with James and Susan between 1850 and 1860 to Randolph Co., AR. They are living in Cach, Randolph Co., AR. The children of James and Susan are as follows: William Smith b. abt 1830 Hamilton Co., TN, married a Margaret, sometime after 1850. In 1850 he was 20, single living with his parents. Sally Smith b. abt 1832 Hamilton Co., TN, have not been able to trace her in the migration to Randolph Co., AR I think she married in Hamilton Co., TN or in Walker Co., GA. Mary Smith, b. abt 1934 Hamilton Co., TN, married Samuel Sammons before migrating to Arkansas. Settled in Randolph Co., AR with rest of the family and remarried after the death of Samuel Sammons to Robert C. Stout. Priscilla Smith b. 18 Feb 1836 Hamilton Co., TN married William M. Stout about 1854 and migrated to Randolph Co., AR with her parents. Campbell Smith b. Jan 1839, Hamilton Co., TN married Angeline Davis in Randolph Co., AR Nancy Smith b. abt 1840 Hamilton Co., TN, no proof of marriage - migrated with parents. Caroline Catherine Smith b abt 1841, Hamilton Co., TN, no proof of marriage - migrated with parents. Martha Smith b. abt 1844, Walker Co., GA, no proof of marriage - migrated with parents. Tennessee J. Smith b. abt 1848, Walker Co., GA, married William James Sammons in Randolph Co., AR and married second time to the husband of Mary, her sister after Mary's death, Robert C. Stout. Henry Smith b. abt 1859 in Randolph Co., AR. Henry was last child of Susan Wallen Smith. She died fair shortly after his birth. James Middleton Smith married a second time in April of 1863 to Mary C. Morris of Randolph Co., AR. As for Littleton Smith he is also living at Lookout Mountain, Walker Co., GA in 1850 with his wife Bathsheba and two children, Elzy H. Smith b. abt 1840 and Mary A. Smith b. abt 1847. Littleton and Bathsheba were living in Randolph Co., AR by 1860 but both of her children are gone. If anyone knows of this family I would appreciate hearing from you. 3. Elsie, It was reported that during May of 1860, when the General Assembly of Georgia could not agree over the question of secession and had debated the issue for days, Robert H. Tatum, "Uncle Bob", jumped up from the back of the General Assembly and shouted out "By the gods, gentlemen, if Georgia does not vote to immediately secede from the Union, Dade County will secede from Georgia and become the Independent State of Dade." Several days later when the issue still had not been settled, it was reported that Uncle Bob returned to Dade County where he called for a public meeting in Trenton. At this meeting, on the courthouse square, a vote was taken for Dade County to secede from Georgia. It supposedly remained this way until July 4, 1945. At this time, Dade County returned to the state of Georgia with much hoopla and fanfare. It was broadcast over a coast to coast hookup of the American Broadcasting Company and Paramount Motion Picture camera men were there to record the pageant over the twelve station southern network. Now, let me hasten to say this... I don't know if the story is true or not true. It is a story that has been around since the Civil War and there may be truth in it. However, no "official" records have ever been found in the General Assembly (or anywhere else) to document that it actually took place. Robert H. Tatum was a representative from Dade County at the time. I live here in Dade County and am proud of it. Part of my ancestors were in the county at the time this took place and I sure wish I could ask them... plus a few more questions. Hope this helps.
