The court house burned in 1882. That is why there are no earlier records - the only hope for finding earlier stuff would be from family bibles, also some marriage dates are listed on tombstones and that sort of source. If people want to send me stuff like that I will be glad to put it on the site with an annotation of where it came from. The marriages that are on the Walker County site are from the courthouse and the actual records can be obtained from the Court house. I do have more recent records than what is currently on the site so I will take this opportunity to let everyone know that. I will be putting those up shortly. In the meantime if you are looking for marriages into the 1920's and 1930's please email me Bill Clody Walker County GaGenWeb County Coordinator. ----- Original Message ----- From: LJDGenieNut@aol.com To: GAWALKER-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Sunday, September 16, 2001 4:12 PM Subject: [GAWALKER] Walker Co. marriages Subj: Early Walker marriages Are there any marriage records at all for Walker County prior to 1882? Hi Everyone, I could really, really use some help with a problem I have in Walker county. I am hunting information on a Jacob IVESTER and the person I believe to be his father John IVESTER. John IVESTER and his wife Elizabeth HELMS are last found in the 1820 census of Rutherford Co., NC with 2 males under 10 years of age. At that point they disappear. Then... in the 1850 census of Walker Co., Georgia I find these folks: Jacob IVESTER - 30 - farmer - NC Nancy - 24 - SC John - 5 - Ga Monroe - 3 - Ga Reuben - 1 - Ga Elizabeth - 1 - Ga The Monroe, age 3 is my great-grandfather. His full name is Asa Monroe IVESTER. To date I do not know Nancy's maiden name but more about that later in the message. And then very near to them in the census is this family: EASON, John B. - 24 - farmer - Ga Elmira - 19 - SC James T. - 1 - Ga In 1860 both of these families are listed together in the Craighead Co., Arkansas census. We believe that Elmira EASON's maiden name was IVESTER and we also believe that she might be a sister to Jacob IVESTER. However, other possibilities also exist. But based on that theory I searched and searched for an EASON family that fits. By the way, later on John EASON and Elmira also name a child Asa. In fact, these two families name their children with a lot of the same names. And... later on descendants of these two families marry each other. I have recently found out that in some funeral home records in Missouri for one of their children, Nancy's maiden name is listed as MASSEY (MASSY) . So now... I am on a search for a MASSEY/MASSY family that might be Nancy's parents. And perhaps there is a possibility that Nancy and Elmira are sisters. I really would appreciate any assistance on these folks. Thanks so much - Emma

John and Eave with their unmarried children were in Walker Co., Ga. by 1840, located at Chickamauga, near the home of John Rickman Holland. Henry Lyda Jackson had married Nancy Ann Holland in 1835, thus the beginnings of the Jackson-Holland ties. John Jackson owned two farms; one of them known today as "Trails End", a registered hereford cattle farm. That was the old homestead though the house has been replaced by a colonial brick. John Jackson died shortly before 1850 after hauling a load of fresh meat to LaFayette and selling it for four cents a pound, we are told, and the son, Henry Lyda, settled the family by selling the farm to the Scott Family, some of whom have remained at Chickamauga to this generation. A small portion of this land was released to the US Government in 1893 by the Scott heirs ro be included in the National Park, commemorating the "Battle of Chickamauga, September 19-20, 1863.
Dear List Members, For today only lets have a roll call, meaning, post the name of your ancestors you are researching in Walker Co., GA. Please post the SURNAMES and years. Please also remember to change the subject line. Kathleen Burnett List Mom
Dear Members, This is Sunday, September 16th, 2001. This list is now closed to postings regarding the Horror we have lived through this week. This includes links you have found regarding the tragedy we are living through. We had our time to post our feelings on the list, now is the time to try to get back to normalcy. If each of you posted a link you found that touched your heart, we would have hundred of links being posted regarding subjects other than the subject of the list. I ask you gently and with respect; Please do not post messages to this list regarding any topic other than those dealing with Walker Co., GA. Kathleen Burnett List Mom
Dear List Members: We are mourning and will be mourning for a long while, the tragedy which happened to us this week. I, as you, hurt and want to cry out and scream to the world "that something has to be done", "we hurt", "why". Those who lost loved ones will continue to need the support of their fellow man while they either wait for word of of their missing or are burying their dead. I I expect no less of each one of us and the days pass. The time has come though, for us to begin the process of trying to live our lives in some kind of normalcy, by trying to slowly bring our lists back to the topic for which they are designed. Therefore as I opened the lists for you to express your grief, I now, most respectfully, and with sorrow, ask that you help me bring them back to the topic of the list. Today is the last day for posting of your feelings and thoughts to the list regarding the tragedy. If you have not had the chance or have felt strong enough to share you feelings with us you can still post them at http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=usa-tragedy.mourning I want to thank each of you for the manner in which you held our flag high this past week, for the manner in which you shared your sorrow, for the manner in which you shared your grief without attacking one another or any culture. I especially want to thank those members who hurt as badly as those who posted regarding what has happened in their world, but could not deal with seeing this horror on their genealogy list. They never said a negative word, but let those who needed this time and this way to express their sorrow have it. These members were true friends to each of us. I ask now that each of you help me to again close the lists to any topic other than the topic of the list as of tomorrow morning, Sunday, September 16th, 2001. I appreciate each of you and thank you for the support I am given by each of you. Kathleen Burnett List Mom
