    3. Thanks to FlaminStorm for the Evitt article. I am hoping this might open up some channels of information for our family. My husband's grandfather John Ruffin White was son to Edward Ellison WHITE and Adaline EVITT/'EVATT. They settled in the McLemore's Cove area. Their children married into the BELL - WEAVER - PIERCE - MOORE and BOYD families. I do not know the relationship between Adaline's and C. W. EVITT but believe there is one. The Bill of Sale of the real estate and other items in the estate of C.W. EVITT lists names (some ??) of his heirs as C.L. EVITT, W. C. EVITT, L.P. EVITT, Elmer EVITT, and Mrs. Lena KELL. Would appreciate any help on this line. Thanks to all. Bonnie White

    2. Interesting... will save that one for future reference. My great-grandfather Taylor Walden helped to build a barn for one Ap Evitt (I believe that's how he referred to him).. MIGHT be the same guy... need to look stuff up to see what I find.... I know this was a farmer in Walker Co, McLemores Cove... not sure of dates... at any rate, I guarantee this man was related to the one who built the barn. Sheila

JIM ABNEY is to undergo an operation. MR. EVITT is believed to have gone to the barnyard well after this time and removed the concrete cover to jump in. Funeral services have not been announced. ~~~~~~~~~~ another clipping reads... Body of A. M. EVITT Found In Stock Well Near House Early Wednesday Morning ~~~~~~~~~~~ No Reason Given For Sad Ending Of His Life Other Than Ill Effects of Severe Attack of Flu-Funeral Friday at Antioch. ~~~~~~~~~~~ The body of ALFRED M. EVITT, aged 57, was found early Wednesday morning in a stock well near his residence, five miles south of LaFayette on the Trion road. Tuesday afternoon Mrs. EVITT, was taken in a car by her son, WM. EVITT. to Albertsville, Ala. to be with her daughter in a surgical operation. WM. returned home about 1 o'clock Wednesday morning. His father opened the door to let his son in and then both retired. In the early morning the family missed their father and began search for him. A little later the sons spied a coat on a stock well some distance from the house, which led them to believe their father had jumped into the well and ended his life. The body was discovered in the well. It is stated the well is walled with stone, that it is 12 foot to the water, and 18 feet of water in the well. MR. EVITT some weeks ago suffered a severe attack of flu, from which he had not recovered, and for the past several days members of the family stated that he had not been himself, and had caused them some anxiety, however, they did not suspect that he had intentions to end his life. The deceased was the son of the late NEHEMIAH EVITT, and MRS.EVITT, of McLemore's Cove. MR. EVITT's father was killed by Roscoe Marable, a negro in 1891, and in 1892 Marable was hanged for the murder Besides his widow, he is survived by four sons, MIAH A., of Everglade, Fla. C. WILLIAM, A.L EVERETT W., of LaFayette; two daughters, MRS. CHAS. ROGERS, of Chattanooga, Tenn., and MRS. J.M. ABNEY, of Albertsville, Ala. A sister, MRS. W.M. BAKER, of Chattanooga, also survives. MR. EVITT was a member of a prominent Walker county family, was a prosperous farmer and dairyman and was a splendid citizen. He was a man of an even temperament, genial disposition, and quietly stood for all those things in his community and county that were right and for the highest good of society. He believed in observance of the law and joined his influence to the agencies to enforce the law. He was ever outspoken in his approval of the Messenger's stand for law enforement, and in his community did what he could to uphold the law enforcing agencies. In early life he professed a faith in Christ and united with the Baptist church. He was at the time of his demise, a member of Walnut Grove Baptist church. His death comes not only as a shock to the immediate family and relatives but to the people of this county and section. Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 11 o'clock, from the Antioch Baptist church, at Cedar Grove. The LaFayette Furniture Co., will have charge of arrangements. .

    3. Leslie, Glad I could help. My name is Beverly Sue... I have always been called Sue but you know how things go... first name, middle initial. If you are near Chattanooga, the Library has Tennessee death certificates on microfilm from 1908 through 1949 (1950 may have come in, it was on order the first of August). There are none for the state in 1913... for some reason or other TN didn't require that year to be filed... someone else may be able to answer the "why" question on that. Georgia has death index on microfiche from 1919 to 1996. We have the set in our library here in Dade Co. The Chattanooga Library does not have those. Good Luck and if I can help, let me know. 3. Sue - Thanks so much for this bit of information. Don't know why I overlooked the link when I was going over the web site for the Chattanooga area. These did raise some additional questions with the difference in spelling of Wood and Woods - thought since she signed her mother's death certificate it was Wood and I found the Pallie Wood who died in 1970 in TN. However, on the obituary death index there are both a Samuel Fred Woods (her husband S. Fred from documents) who died in 1945 and a Pallie Elizabeth Woods who died in 1932. Also one for a Bonnie L. Reeves who very well could be her brother who I think died in GA with the same date as what was on the index. So you are helping to solve 3 problems just by taking the time to answer my query. 3. Leslie, This may or may not help you... However, the Chattanooga, TN newspapers carried and still carry many obits from the tri-state area that includes northwest Georgia. You might try finding an obit for the people by going to the Chattanooga/Hamilton County Bicentennial Library on-line obit index. The site is www.lib.chattanooga.gov When the page opens, click on the community page icon. Next click on the obituary icon. A info page will open, scroll to the bottom of that page and click on check data base. When the data base page opens, type in last name first and be sure to open the little drop down menu under the name you type in and hi-lite browse author or name before you hit the "find" button. The reason for doing that is if the name you type in isn't exactly how it was entered in the data base then you will get an "unable to find" message. If you hi-lited the browse button, you may still get an "unable to find" message but a page will open to the all with that surname and you can check through each one to see if one might be yours. Hope this helps, let me know if you have a question. 3. Hello Listers, I know that there are several Headrick researchers on this list so I thought I would pass this along. I believe this is the same William Headrick b. 1744 in PA that was in the Revolutionary War. His son was John b. 1775 who married Elizabeth Myers. Does anyone know if William Headrick had a son by the name of Dan? If so, any information would be greatly appreciated. This comes from the Greene County Deed Abstracts 1810-1822 Volumes 9, 10, 11, and 12 by Joyce Martin Murray. In an attempt to get everything copied before the library closed, I forgot to document which exact volume the entries come from (either volume 9, 10, 11 or 12).
