Linda Sue - One of my unanswered questions is about having close family in Walker Co. This family was Solomon Reaves (who probably died in Orange Co. FL 1889-1899 since he purchased land in 1888 and she appears as a widow on the 1900 census in Walker Co.) and his wife Alice Alto Speer. The only Speer I see in the records so far is a Dr. who died in 1902 and is buried in Forest Hills Cemetery. My first impression is that she is not related to him since I think the probate records indicate that the funeral home made application for the meager funds she had left to help pay her funeral expenses. Her children seem to have moved to the Chattanooga and Catoosa areas - I've traced one daughter who married a Woods (her daughters married into Blivens, Erb, Blizzard and Knapp), think one daughter never married, one son had a daughter who never married and unable to locate the other children so far. The only other name I have found in Walker Co. that could have a connection is Bryan. Solomon's grandmother had as her third husband Needham Bryan of Jefferson Co., FL. Needham had a rather large family from several marriages and one of them could be the Bryan Funeral Home family. However, that is just speculation on my part. Just been curious as to why she would have moved so far from her husband's large family who according to tradition always spoke well of this family so don't feel it was due to their lack of "taking care" of them after Solomon died. Thought maybe there was something going on in Walker Co. during that time frame which would provide her enough income to support her children and make her move. Leslie, Could she have had close family there and did she lose her husband? I have lots of info on families in the area, and maybe I can help you. Linda Sue
I also tried the Chattanooga Library about 12:30 a.m. (ET) this morning and kept getting "site not available." So, I called the local history and genealogy department to ask if there was a problem. The answer I was given was "no, it stays very busy and people have to keep trying, but they are hoping for improvements soon." I already knew this but was reminded again that the library is 4th in the link line. A line in (or hit) goes through Nashville first, second, the school system, then the city of Chattanooga and fourth, the Library. Hopefully the improvements will be soon. Sue
Could someone tell me if something was going on in Walker Co. between 1890-1900 that would cause a widow with 5 children to leave northern Florida to move to Walker Co.? I do not have much on her family so am unable to determine if she had other family members there. None of her husband's family was there that I know of unless the Bryan's are from the Jefferson Co., FL Bryan family. Sorry I'm not up on my history of the area. As for the Chattanooga Library, I was finally able to access it one out of about 30 tries yesterday and it was very, very, very slow. Then realizing I had forgotten one name tried again about 1:30 a.m. and could not get on. At least I was able to determine 10 obits I need to order during the time on-line. Leslie
Delilah, We just returned home tonight after being out of town due to a death in my husband's family. Sorry to sound dumb, however, I'm a little confused about the question in your message... Are talking about information in James A. Sartain's HISTORY OF WALKER COUNTY GEORGIA, Volume 1 (by the way, there has never been a volume 2)? That book has been reprinted more than once and are still available. It can be purchased in a couple of different places. I don't have an original copy but do have an early reprint that I would not take any thing for. I also have the index to it. So there are many (probably a few hundred or more) of those books out from which one can obtain information. I'm not sure who has the copyright on it now but it was published less than 75 years ago. James A. Sartain interviewed people for his short family articles.... some of it is correct and some of it is not. In the cemetery section, I think he stood in the middle of a cemetery and recorded the tombstones he could see and he left out a whole lot of data of those. He did NOT record every tombstone in any of the cemeteries he listed. When he used court records, he only hit the hi-lites of those. He also didn't write alot about the north end of Walker County either. I'm not being critical as I'm very glad he did what he did. It has been a great value to many of us who has roots in the county. Sorry, I don't think I've answered your question. And since I've been out of town, I must have missed the first of it. I know Benton Fletcher who made the marriage records available to the Walker Co web site. And, I know he would not take something that was posted on a message board to download to any site. OK, I have asked this question and have not got a reply so here goes again - I have a lot of resources and things/information I have collected - one being the book History of Walker County Georgia - in this book is some short family histories, in those histories are some dates of marriage and childrens names, etc., also are some cemetary records and records of other things concerning Walker County, Ga., - now, my question, I do not mind putting this information out for people to use to assist them in compiling their ancestry and learning about their families - but if that information is going on some personal/county web-site and be placed under a copyright, then I am sorry but I will keep my material - now to me that is a very selfish thing. This information may be someplace in Walker County and some may not be, all I ask is that if I provide information to someone and that information goes onto a web-site, that I get credit for obtaining the information and donating it to the people who's ancestry goes or comes from Walker County, Georgia. delilah evans/avans At 19:04 10/2/01 -0400, you wrote: >The courthouse fire was 8 February 1883. Linda, About 15 minutes after I left that message this morning I got into the library site but could not get into the obits. I just tried again tonight and could not get into the site and could not get into either of the links below. Neither could I get into it from the link on my website that I usually use. Then I tried the link from the Hamilton County Genealogical Society and it did not work either. I always keep trying though. SOURCE: THE BIRMNGHAM NEWS Recovery teams set to enter coal mine 10/02/01 TED PRATT News staff writer Recovery teams will enter a blast-damaged Brookwood coal mine today, beginning the process of recovering the bodies of a dozen miners killed in a Sept. 23 explosion. Officials with Tampa-based Walter Industries Inc., owner of the mine, said Monday that six teams of seven people each will work 12-hour shifts to stabilize the mine and recover the bodies. Thirteen miners died in the accident, one of them at a hospital. More than 33.5 million gallons of water have been pumped into Jim Walter Resources Inc. Blue Creek No. 5 in an attempt to extinguish fires burning in the 2,140-foot deep mine. The water should cut off oxygen to areas of the mine that cannot be flooded. "At this point, we believe the fires are under control," said Kyle Parks, spokesman for Walter Industries. "We have two priorities to get down into the mine and recover the bodies and also make sure that recovery efforts will not put the teams at risk." Crews on Sunday completed drilling an 11-inch-wide shaft that reaches from the surface to a point near where the explosions originated. That shaft is being used to monitor levels of methane gas and carbon monoxide in the mine. Parks said the recovery teams are made up of union and company workers and officials from the Mine Safety and Health Administration, which is conducting an investigation. It's expected that during each 12-hour shift one of the seven-member crews will serve as an advance team, backed up by two other crews. "Several teams will be working concurrently in different parts of the mine," Parks said. Once underground, crews will maintain constant radio contact with a control room on the surface and repair the mine's existing telephone paging system, damaged in the explosions. Officials won't put a timetable on how long it may take to drain the water from the mine and to recover the bodies. To drain the water, the mine's pumps will be used, as will extra pumps that crews will lower into the shaft during their exploratory efforts. The accident is believed to have been triggered by a partial roof collapse, which dropped rock onto a battery charger inside the mine. Roof collapses can release pockets of methane gas, which would ignite quickly in the presence of a spark. Officials believe the roof collapse also damaged ventilation equipment, which allowed a dangerous buildup of methane and led to a second, much more powerful explosion. Meanwhile, donations continue to mount for families of the lost miners and for more than 300 workers who have been off the job since the accident closed the mine. Parks said a fund established by Walter Industries has reached $54,000, including a $25,000 contribution from the Mercedes-Benz plant in nearby Vance. Parks said Walter Industries will match all contributions to the fund. Another fund established by the United Mine Workers of America Local 2368 has generated about $71,000, not including a pledge from the Pittsburg & Midway Coal Co. North River Mine, whose workers are donating a day's pay to families of the accident victims. P&M will match those donations, which are expected to generate a total of more than $55,000. A benefit concert headlined by singer Lee Greenwood has been scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, at Tuscaloosa's Riverside Amphitheater, though the location is subject to change depending on the size of the crowd. SOURCE: The Birmingham News Blue Creek No. 5 led state in safety citations for 2000 10/02/01 KRISTI LAMONT ELLIS News staff writer Jim Walter Resources Inc.'s Blue Creek No. 5 mine, the site of the nation's worst mine disaster since 1984, received the most federal safety citations of the state's six underground coal mines in 2000. Even though the mine ranked third in the state in the number of employee hours worked last year, it was tops in the number of safety citations and actions orders issued by inspectors of the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration. The Brookwood mine, the nation's deepest at 2,140 feet, was the site of explosions Sept. 23 that killed 13 people, an accident that has raised questions about whether the federal agency charged with monitoring mine safety is doing its job. A federal accident investigation mandated by the U.S. Department of Labor is under way there, concurrent with continuing recovery efforts. Part of the investigation will include a records review. Operator hours worked are an industry-accepted method of measuring employee exposure to hazards. Investigators will look at such factors as both the mine's physical upkeep and its workers' rate of nonfatal accidents and injuries resulting in time off work. In 2000, the No. 5 mine posted 882,342 operator hours worked and 525 safety citations and/or action orders for the year, the most recent for which full-year statistical data is available. The citations resulted in $77,078.18 in fines paid. In comparison, Drummond Co.'s Shoal Creek Mine logged more than 1.2 million operator hours worked, with 247 citations and $23,858 paid in fines. On the accident and injury front, No. 5's workers had a nonfatal lost-time incidence rate of 9.97 percent; Drummond's group posted a 15.69 percent comparable rate for the same period. That national incidence rate for 2000 was 8.30 percent. A review of the other Jim Walter mines shows that the company's No. 7 miners worked 885,259 hours in 2000, and that operation received 503 safety orders and $80,922.85 in fines. Its No. 4 operation logged 877,362 hours worked and 293 citations, with $32,815 in fines. The No. 7 mine's nonfatal safety rate for 2000 was 12.20 percent, and No. 4's was 6.84 percent. While in Birmingham last week to announce the incident investigation, Assistant Secretary of Labor for Mine Safety and Health Dave D. Lauriski was asked at a press conference about allegations of lax MSHA inspections, including a charge that inspectors played golf with company officials. Some United Mine Workers of America members have said fraternization between MSHA inspectors and Jim Walker officials has resulted in inspectors being more lenient on violations. Also, UMWA Safety and Health Administrator Joe Main has said the union that represents the Brookwood miners would be investigating the federal agency's effectiveness. Kyle Parks, spokesman for mine owner Walter Industries, said employees are required to avoid conflicts of interest and are aware of MSHA regulations that bar inspectors from accepting anything of value from companies they regulate. Frank C. Young Jr., MSHA District 11 manager, said he has no knowledge of any improper or ineffective activities on the part of inspectors. "We're coal miners before we're inspectors," Young said of the typical MSHA inspector's career path. "Some of us have family members who still work in the mines, so maybe people see you with you brother-in-law on the golf course and get the wrong idea." Copyright 2001 al.com. All Rights Reserved.

Barbara and Leslie, I have tried four times this morning to get into it and can't. Leslie, I would suggest that you just keep trying because I was in it day before yesterday without any problem. I even have a link from my homepage to it so I can get there faster plus have it in my favorites bar. I have tried them all this morning. I do know that occasionally they shut their server down for repairs or upgrades because they told me so one day when I was up there. Keep trying.
