William Poe RAWLINGS and his wife, Ellender ALFRED, both born in TN., moved to Cherokee Co AL before 1840. They were the parents of 6 children... a daughter, sons, John W., and William Poe, Jr., three other daus: Margaret, Nancy and Joannah. The RAWLINGS family moved to McLemore Cove shortly after 1860 where Ellender purchased land. When the Union soldiers came through McLemore Cove, on their way to the Battle of Chickamauga, they came through Ellender's property. Ellender stated that they supported the Union and William Poe, her husband, joined the soldiers, never to returned. She was later notified that he had died in TN. There is no info on the first dau. Son, John W., moved to Oregon after 1870 but traveled back and forth to another home in AR. William Poe, Jr., never married. Dau, Nancy married, however, she died early. Joannah married Walter GENTRY and moved to the St. Elmo area of Hamilton Co TN. Margaret (my gr-grandmother) married John Umphrey PARHAM, son of William Franklin and Mary Lucinda MOWREY. They moved back to the northern end of the county from McLemore Cove, settling just south of South Nick-a-jack Rd. Later they purchased property across the road from the Flintstone Methodist Church in Chattanooga Valley where they remained to rear five children. Ellender, Nancy and William Poe, Jr are buried in Antioch Cemetery in McLemore Cove. John W., is buried in Union Co OR., Joannah and Walter are buried in Forest Hills Cemetery in St. Elmo. My gr-grandparents, John and Margaret, are buried in Cenchat Baptist Cemetery, now known as Chattanooga Valley Baptist Cemetery in Walker Co. If you have any knowledge or related to any of the above people, I would love to hear from you... especially on the RAWLINGS and ALFRED as we have so very little info on them. Thank you. Sue Parham Forrester
John H. LONG moved to Walker Co GA from McMinn Co TN prior to 1850. Shortly after 1850, his son, James Riley LONG and James' wife, Margaret HANSON, followed him to the Cenchat area (now Chattanooga Valley) of Walker Co. Margaret was the daughter of Thomas and Nancy (---) HANSON of Fayette Co/Coweta Cos GA. However, Margaret married James Riley in McMinn Co TN in the 1840's. Per a family Bible, Thomas died in Walker Co 1879. We have no information on Nancy. Some of Margaret's siblings, Rebecca and Nicey Ann, married into the Camp family but both were widowed at an early age. Another sister, Elizabeth married into the Cagle family in Bradley Co. A son of James Riley and Margaret, James William LONG, married Summerfield WILLIAMS, dau of Alfred WILLIAMS and Matilda HUTSON/HUDSON of Campbell Co TN. Alfred died ca 1869 in Walker Co. It is believed he was related to some of the other WILLIAMS families in the Chattanooga Valley area. After his death Matilda married into the George W. ELLIS. If anyone has any information regarding the above families, I appreciated hearing from you. Sue Parham Forrester
On June 18, 1902, a double wedding took place in Walker Co., GA: Victoria "Vick" Benge married F. M. Cathey and Cora Benge married Thomas Dyer In 1908 Cora and her husband were living in Columbus, GA; in 1912, they were in Rossvill, GA. Victoria died Nov. 1953; her obituary was run in the Chattanooga "Times". Cora and Victoria were my grandfather's aunts. I have inherited postcards from both of them from the 1905 - 1914 time period...but I've had no luck finding out any more what happened to them. I know Cora had children; don't know about Victoria. Their sister, Carrie Thula Benge b. Sep. 1869, married and moved to Texas, where she died in 1909. The 3 girls are listed as living in Hamilton Co., TN with their mother, Louisa, in the 1880 Tennessee Soundex. We've had no luck finding out who their father was, Louisa's maiden name, etc. Any clues on these families much appreciated. (The Walker Co. GA Marriage Index incorrectly spells Victoria's surname as Bunge. I'm certain it was Benge...but I've also looked under alternate spellings in Hamilton Co., TN and Walker Co., GA and still can't figure out any more about these families.) Vicki Hill Texas
William Franklin PARHAM, born Haywood Co., N.C., early 1800's, lived in Dade Co, GA from ca 1852 to 1870, then moved to Walker Co. He first lived just south of what is now South Nick-a-jack Rd., next to his sister-in-law, Milla MOWREY PARHAM, widow of his brother, John PARHAM. William Franklin, son of William and Catherine HUMPHREY PARHAM, was the brother to Martha "Patsy" PARHAM who married James MASSEY in 1835. Patsy and James moved to the Lookout Mountain area of Walker Co somewhere between what is now Durham and the Payne Chapel area before 1850. I do not know when they died or where they are buried. William Franklin died 1892 while living in McLemore Cove area of Walker County. His widow, Mary Lucinda Mowrey (sister of Milla), was the daughter of Lewis MOWREY and Elizabeth LISBEE of Knox Co TN, then of Bradley Co TN before removing to AR then to Lamar Co TX. Mary Lucinda moved back to Dade Co after William Franklin died where she was listed in Rising Fawn on the 1900 census. I do not know when she died or where she is buried. If you have any connections with the above people, I would love to hear from you. William Franklin and Mary Lucinda were my gr-gr-grandparents. Thank you Sue Parham Forrester

Catoosa & Walker Counties. Mary M. REED was born April 1, 1826 in VA, she died Feb.3, 1863 and is buried at Salem Baptist Church in Salem, just NE of Ringgold. She married in 1853, Reese Barton (R.B. or Bart) BAYLESS, b.1823, d. abt. 1863. Mary died during the Civil War as did her husband. Bart died of wounds received while fighting for the CSA Army and he is buried in Charlottesville, VA. Children of Mary and Bart include William H. BAYLESS (buried at Noble Baptist Church, Walker Co.), Eliza Almer (Bayless) CRABTREE, and Betty (Bayles) BOYD. Nothing is known of the BOYDs by me. The CRABTREEs settled in Cottle Co., TX and had several children. Some BAYLESS kin lived in Walker Co. and many family members went to TX. I would like to know who the REEDs were, who were Mary's parents and sibs? Thank you! Barbara Ribling bribling@mail.datasys.net
Catoosa & Walker Counties. Silas SMITH married Susan BAYLESS, JAN 7, 1869 in Catoosa Co. Susan was the daughter of Samuel P. BAYLESS and Sarah HAMPTON of McMinn Co., TN. Silas was born about 1813 in SC and he (or possibly another Silas SMITH?) appears, age 37, in the 1850 census for McMinn Co., TN. Susan was born about 1822, probably in McMinn Co. Susan's brother John P. BAYLESS lived in both Catoosa and Walker Counties as did some of her other siblings. Her mother Sarah BAYLESS was living in Catoosa Co. in 1860. I know nothing else of this SMITH family. Who were Silas' parents, sibs? Did Silas and Susan have children? Was Silas married to another before he married Susan? Thanks! Barbara Ribling bribling@mail.datasys.net

Elias WISE, b.SC, appears on the 1870 census: p.197, Frick's Gap, Walker Co., GA Elias Wise age 74, retired farm laborer, born in SC, can't read or write Eliza Wise age 42, keeping house, born in TN Joannah age 12, born in GA Avy age 8 born in GA Mary age 5, born in GA Daughter Caroline: 1870 census for Frick's Gap, Walker Co., GA p.191 Caroline Wise age 17, born in AL, domestic servant to Elijah Mathis, farm laborer Daughter Harriet: 1870 census for Frick's Gap, Walker Co, GA p.198 Harriet Wise age 16, born in AL, domestic servant to Levi W. Brooks, farmer Harriet was my Grt-Grandmother. She married William Clinton BAYLESS sometime between 1870 and 1878 when her first child, Arthur BAYLESS was born. Marriage records for these people were most likely lost in the Walker Co. courthouse fire. I have no records other than census for these family members. Harriet is believed to have been at least part Cherokee indian but she does not appear under the name WISE or BAYLESS in any Cherokee roll. I have photos of Harriet and she definitely has the appearance of a young Cherokee, dark complexion, round face. When asked about her parents, Harriet said, "A buzzard laid me on a stump and the sun hatched me out." Mary married dr. J.W. DAVENPORT, Avy married George BAGLEY and I do not know what became of Caroline or of Johannah. The WISE family were in Cherokee Co., AL, in 1860 along with a domestic named Elizabeth "Eliza" DULLEN who may have been the natural mother of Harriet and one or more of the other girls. The children are said to have all been adopted. Barbara Ribling bribling@mail.datasys.net
I am researching the Bridges, Keown, Head and Stephenson families in Walker Co., Ga. and Southeast Tn. areas. The Bridges and Keowns migrated from Abbyville area of S.C. in the mid 1840's. The Head family was from that area also, while the Stephensons came from N.C. Joyce Buffat jbuffat@comcast.net

I am researching my great great grandfather William Riley, a former Sheriff of Walker County (born Sept 1845). He was married to Sarah Smith (born June 1850) from Tennessee. Six of their eleven children were listed on the 1900 US Federal Census, Lafayette Village: Ada A (born July 1877), Rebecca L (born June 1882), Abraham O (born Dec 1885), Irvin D (born Sept 1889), Charles E (born Sept 1891), and Ruth J (born Sept 1894). If anyone has information about the Rileys of Walker County, please let me know. Thank you, Kathy Riley Carrbor, NC
Solomon T. Reaves/Reeves married Alice Alto Speer 1874 in Orange Co, FL, they migrated back up to Madison Co., FL where they appear on the 1880 Census. Alice is found on the Walker Co., GA 1900 census with their children. I have been told Solomon died either in Jefferson Co, FL or Orange Co, FL but have not been able to locate his grave. I can not figure out why Alice moved to Walker Co, GA. So far I've been unable to trace any of her immediate family. She died in Rossville, Walker, GA 5 Mar 1930. After moving to GA she apparently started using the spelling of Reeves rather than Reaves. Searching for relatives of my ggrandmother, Sarah Elizabeth "Lizzie" BROWNING. I believe her father may have been Washington L. BROWNING of Walker county, but I have been unable to definitely connect the line. She married Charles Robert SALMON about 1881 and was living in Floyd county, GA in the late 1880s. Charles Robert "Charlie" SALMON was living in the Rock Spring community of Walker county in 1870, moving to Chattooga and Floyd counties later in life. His mother was Frances E. (WHEATLEY) SALMON. She and her parents, William & Judith WHEATLEY, were also living in Walker County in the 1870s. I'm searching, too, for Sarah Matilda "Tilda" COOK's relatives in Walker county. She and her husband, S. R. "Pete" BROOM, were living there in 1885; they later moved to Chattooga and Floyd counties. Any help with these surnames will be greatly appreciated.
