sure...........be happy to! Linda Sue
Loretta, I have a copy of the 1870 census what do you need a look up on and I can hopefully find it for you Linda Sue
Fricks Gap is an area south of present day Highway 193 (La Fayette/Trenton Hwy) along the foot of Lookout Mountain into McLemore Cove. However, during the censuses years to which you are referring, Fricks Gap sometimes cover a lot more area to the north (almost to present day High Point) along the foot of Lookout Mountain. Is there an 1870 census INDEX of Georgia on line anywhere? Do not have that State on Ancestry.com, or not all of it anyway. Also a 1870 mortality schedule. Loretta
I didn't see the request that brought about this reply, but I wanted to let Freddie know that I have the Catoosa 1860 census book. So if what is needed is in 1860, let me know. Does anyone know where in Walker County, Fricks Gap township or district is located? My family, the Gillean/Gillians and Jacksons all lived in that area on the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census reports. Any help would be appreciated. Carolyn
Bonnie, Estelle was a coal mine as was Durham (used to be called Pittsburg) I do not know much more than that other than the coal was mined and sent down to Chickamauga to the coke ovens there. Linda Sue
Freddie, I have the online census, but you have to go through it a page at a time & it takes forever! I went though some of it the other night for you, hoping to find the family in question. Some of the records are difficult to read but I was making pretty good progress. I started with Ringgold. You don't happen to know WHERE in Catoosa they might've lived do you? Sheila
The town of Estelle is no longer there and unless you are familiar with where it was at, it is hard to find. It is a couple miles north of Shields Crossroads and at the foot of Pigeon Mountain, when you are heading towards Lafayette, Ga. on hwy 193. There is a road sign that says Estelle Cemetery and the road that goes to the Cemetery up on the hill. The school used to be on top of that hill and the holler north of the Cemetery had several houses in it, when the Rail Road had an old Wooden Trussle that crossed the holler until they tore it down and filled the holler with dirt and made a Rail Road across it. The big Tunnel that goes through the Mountain is still there. The old Rail Road is growed up pretty bad now and may be hard to follow to the tunnel. Just watch out for the Rattle Snakes. There are some of the largest I have ever seen anywhere down there. The field across from where the old Trussle used to be, now has a little pull off and a horse trail that goes up and around the side of the Mountain to a couple of old Dinky Train tunnels that went through the Mountain. There used to be a couple of old slate piles where the parking for the pull off is located and you may see where the little Dinky train ran, it had a raised track it ran on in the field. When I was a boy, I used to go Coon Hunting in the mountains with my Dad and we would walk back into the Mountain and Hollers at Estelle. There used to be several houses along the old road. My Dad was Born in that field when Estelle was a booming little town. My Great Grand Parents Doc and Sally Brannon ran a Boarding house there in Estelle during the time it was operating. My GrandFather, Thomas S. Brannon and my Dad Ralph Brannon grew up there in Estelle, Ga. My GrandFather Married Ed Smith's (A foreman on the Tag Rail Road) Daughter. Lora Smith. There were a lot of families that lived in Estelle and there is a Museum and Antique shop located in Chickamauga, Ga. by the Rail Road crossing s in Chickamauga that has a lot of history about Estelle, Ga. in it and some good historical books about Walker County that has a lot of information it it about Estelle, Ga. A lot of my relatives are in it to. My G Grandparents are buried in the Estelle Grave Yard also. I go there every time I get to go home to visit. A time long gone. Not much to see down there anymore and it is hard to get around since the State took over down there. I guess you have to walk or ride a horse to get back into the mountains anymore. As a young man, I was all over those Mountains down there There is still a lot of old rail road iron and also some old wells still in those mountains so if you go back to the Mountains down there, be real careful where you step. that old Mountain is mostly holler in some places. We lost a lot of hunting dogs down there. The State has closed off a lot of the old roads. There is an Old Timer that works over at the Griss Mill in Chickamauga, Ga . that can tell you a tail or two also. That is, if he is still alive. I can't help you with Estelle Station, but my Harwell family is from Walker Co. Ga. I wondered what you ancestor's name was. We might be kin. Mary Frances Hodges
There certainly was. Federal Census was taken every 10 years since 1790 in all states and territories. What confuses a lot of people is that not all censuses are available. The majority of 1890 was destroyed in a fire in the basement of the commerce building in Washington and the censuses more recent than 1930 are sealed until they are 72 years old for the privacy of the information. As you move forward in time there is more and more information in each year's census. Name misspellings are quite common. Remember the early census was taken door to door with the individual orally relating his or her name to the enumerator. If the census taker didn't ask how they spelled it then it went in the ledger how he thought it should be spelled. Also the literacy rate in rural areas was low at times depending on how isolated it was. ----- Original Message ----- From: Freorden@aol.com To: GAWALKER-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Sunday, September 22, 2002 3:42 AM Subject: Re: [GAWALKER] White & Bird family: No, I did not know that it was spelled Fredrick instead of Frederick? There is a national census taken every ten years in the United States. There was one taken in the late1700's that just named the head of the house. The first really offical one was in 1820 but gave only the name of the head of the house and then a numeric count of the othes in the household. The 1850 census is the one where everyone in the household was named. The 1890 census burned in a fire in Washington. So, yes, there was a census in 1870 in Georgia.
No, I did not know that it was spelled Fredrick instead of Frederick? Maybe that's the key? Was there a 1870 Census taken in Georgia? Freddie B.
BOB WHITE?..........Ha, Ha, Ha, ..................:-) Rainy nite in Georgia?, La,La,La...................:-) Freddie B.
Are you aware that Frederick's name is spelled Fredrick in the Georgia marriage records? It's possible that the spelling is wrong in census records as well. Sheila S.
Was there a son named Bob White????? Just kiddin' ok???? It's a rainy night in Georgia & I thought I'd say hi to my old friend Freddie. Will BOLO for the White folks.... Sheila
