    1. [GAWALKER] The LUCKY 13 Newsletter Monday October 22, 1945
    2. Thought I might share this Newsletter with Ya'll - from my Gramma's old Papers Bonnie "Dedicated to Keeping Our Cargo of Laughs at the Maximum Point" THE LUCKY (13) PUBLICATION OF THE USS HESPERIA ( AKS 13) Founded 6/2/45 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------ VOLUME ONE MONDAY, October 22, 1945 NUMBER TWENTY ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -------- WHERE TO NEXT ??? Several have inquired about statistical data, but up until a short while ago the censorship regulations prohibited any such publications. Since censorship has ceased, to a certain extent our erstwhile friends, the Wuartermasters, have assisted a great bit in helping us round up the statistical data you have been waiting for. The HESPERIA has covered a vast amount of water since she was commissioned April 1, 1945, so here are the dates, places, mileages and etc. that have attributed to the HESPERIA's varied travels since departure from the grand old U.S. >From To Date Mileage Norfolk Panama May 16 1,981 Panama Pearl May 26 4,692 Pearl Ulithi June 20 3,864 Ulithi Okinawa July 15 1,233 Okinawa ChimuWan Aug. 1 50 ChimuWan Okinawa Aug. 6 50 Okinawa Ulithi Aug. 26 1,228 Ulithi Manus Sept. 3 799 Manus Guam Sept. 22 1,140 Guam Okinawa Oct. 3 1,243 Okinwas Jinsen Oct. 14 875 October 17 finds us still here at Jinsen, Lorea but the question has arisen, "Where to next?" You have us there - you tell us and then we'll all know. So far, we have covered something like 17,155 miles, not counting the many miles covered by changing berths and zig-zag courses. MANY SLATED TO BE DISCHARGED IN THE NEAR FUTURE ***** For the past few days there has been quite a it of excietement among our crew members. Many of the older fellows, with the most time in, you will see busy all day long, cleaning their clothes and getting everything ready - just in case. Within the next two or three months, the HESPERIA will be losing approximately 39 men, who will be returning to their wives, sweethearts, and above all, dear old civilian life. To those who have already left or those who are planning to leave in the near future, we extend our best of wishes and hope you will make a great success as civilians. You have earned it, men, make the best of it and enjoy it to the utmost. - - - One of the lads over in the troop area was bemoaning the fact that the GI laundry hadn't come back in two weeks. "I haven't got a decent pair of pants to my name," he grumbled. "Why don't you sue them for promise of breeches?" piped up one of his buddies. - - - A pedestrian is a person who failed to keep up payment on his automobile. Daughter: It collapsed all of a sudden, father, but neither of us was hurt." The DEDK DIVISION SPEAKS --- Amid the thunder of winches and the hub bub of our activities, here we are again fellers. We're back to give you another week's events about the dock. Speaking for myself and all the rest, we're a pretty happy bunch of fellows...Reason - you guessed it, we've finally got some mail from our loved ones at home. Baby Klotz is especially happy Cause he heard from Josephine. Better watch some of these wolves on here, Baby, they kinda have their eye on her. Points have it that we'll soon be losing Todd, Friend and a few other civilians-at-heart on here. Sorry to lose you fellers, it's been swell being shipmates with you. If you fellows need any good sea stories to cheer you up, just Garland Bones Friends. Our Garland says the first initials of his name, G.L., means Good Looking Friend. Just call him G.L. for short tho', fellows, he forgets to answer to the other handle once in awhile. Cheeko has big plans for himself in the States. He said he's been missing out on a lot of fun. We sure pitty women and bars when you do get back, bub. We here that you're a killer with the women. Since this is just a fill-in paper for this week, fellers, we'll shove off now. Be seeing you next week with a better column and a few laughs thrown in. So long. - - - The cross-examiner was having a little trouble with a difficult witness. Exasperated by evasive answers, he asked the witness if he was acquaninted with any of the jury. "Yes, sir, more than half of them," replied the man on the witness stand. "Are you willing to swear that you know more than half of them?" Persisted the lawyer. "As far as that goes, I'm willing to swear that I know more than all of them put together," defied the witness.

    3. Many Thanks for the Map. I enjoyed going over it. It especially had the old names that so many have forgotten. The way the Rail Road run along Lookout mountain and through Chattanooga Valley in the old days brought back a lot of memories. I remember when I was a young man going swimming in Lula Lake where Rock Creek dropped off the Mountain down into Chattanooga Valley. It was very cold water and had Trout swimming in it. Used to fish for them from time to time. Lula Lake was another Civil war hide out also. 2. There is a small publication, I believe put out by the Walker County Historical Society, it is called "The Cupola" - it has quite a bit of information on Estelle and also the mines and the town, as it was, there are also several photos. If you will send the name of your ancestor, I can check and see if it is mentioned in the article. delilah evans At 11:25 9/22/02 EDT, you wrote: >Can anyone tell me where Estelle Georgia is location in Walker County? >Does Estelle still exist? 1. Re: [GAWALKER] 1870 census of Georgia
    2. Thanks Deerrun Actually the first Mary Jane Coffman lived until 1886 and died in Hill Co., Texas. She married first James Little and he died 1862 in the Civil War. Mary Jane moved to Texas and married Samuel Cannon. Descendants still reside there. The second Mary E. we dont know if Mary Ellen or Elizabeth Coffman, born 1851/3. We do not know who she married. There was a Betsy Huffman residing with Sarah Coffman Brown, 1900 Hill Co., TX. Betsy was born ca 1851. We are not sure if she is the missing Mary E. Coffman, or not. Actually we think the two Marys were intended to be one name Maryjane and Maryellen. There was a daughter, Martha M. Coffman b. ca 1849 that we are not sure who she married. If anyone knows anything of Mary E. or Martha M. Coffman and who they married, we would sure appreciate hearing from them. We are trying to get all this family data together of 13 children. Thank you so much for responding to my request. It is much appreciated! Loretta The children of Andrew J. Coffman and ELizabeth Clark are as follows: 1. Thomas J. Coffman, 1837-1908 m. Martha Carnes. 2. Mary Jane Coffman, 1838-1886 m. James Little and Samuel Cannon. 3. John Calvin Coffman, 1840-1916 m. Lucy J Peppers 4. Sarah A. Coffman, 1843-1906 m. Joseph M. Brown 5. Amanda Caroline Coffman, 1845-1886 m. Samuel R. Macklin (McLin) 6. Salina "Lina" Elizabeth Coffman, 1847-1903 m. Simon Y. Strickland. 7. Refina Coffman, 1849-1924, m. Thomas B. Arnold 8. Martha M. Coffman 1849 twin and we have no clue as to whom she married. 9. Tennessee Jennifer Coffman, 1851-1928, m. W.B. "Jack" Brown 10.Mary E. Coffman, ca 1851/3- ? we do not know who she married. 11.Elbert Houston Coffman, 1855-1930, m. Naomi Wilson. He is mispelled as Robert in the census. 12.Nancy Octavia Coffman, 1857- ? , m. Porter Williams 13.Hugh Coffman, 1859-1934, m. Mary Elizabeth Williams. I am actually surprised that John Calvin Coffman is not in the 1870 census. He must have gotten bypassed. The 1880 census in Texas list the last Georgia born Coffman child of John as 1874. Could be that they moved over the border for a short season into Alabama or Tennessee. Thanks again! Loretta

    3. Frick's Gap became known as Cooper Heights and can be found under that name in later census records. I believe it is located north of Cassandra (?). My BAYLESS ancestors lived near there on Back Valley Rd. close to New Prospect Church. They appear in the census for Fricks Gap. My grt-gf was William Clinton Bayless who was a member of New prospect and was ordained there in 1890. My grandfather Julius Alexander "Boss" Bayless was born in Cassadra. 1. [GAWALKER] Estelle, Ga.
    2. Tom or Sandy
    3. Another good source of information for Estelle Mines and Community is Frank Shaw. He lives there at Davis Crossroads and you can stop and chat and he will show you his old Slave dwellings and Farm house he lives in. Also. My G Grandparents (Doc and Sally Brannon) used to live in the little white house that is now an Antique Shop, behind the small store there in Davis Crossroads intersection. If you are coming from Chickamauga, go through Davis crossroads about 2 to 3 miles and turn left onto the Pocket road. Take a ride into the Pocket. If you can go to the end of the road, used to be a gate at the foot of the Mountain, it will end at a spring and a cabin on top of the hill into some of the most beautiful country in that neck of the woods. I also used to hunt and play on that farm when I was growing up, before, the State took it over and closed it all off. Cecil Tarvin owned that farm back then and me and his nephew (Doug Carson) was best of friends and we liked to ! go to the Pocket. It was like going into another world away from everything else. Sure was nice until the State turned it into a hunting refuge and stopped people from entering into the Pocket. The old road going up the side of the Mountain into the Pocket was dug out of the rock by hand by slaves and it was also used for a Civil War hide out, as I have been told by the old timers that lived down there in the Cove. I understand that the "Grant farm" located at the road where you turn to go into the pocket is for sale these days. The oldest Oak in that part of the country was declared lately by (Georgia State Game and Fish Dept.) to be living behind the old white Grant home on the right side of the road. First house on the right on the Pocket road. This is also worth riding down there to see. Beautiful country. Talk about God's Country. Tom Brannon

John was raised in Walker Co., Georgia. Son of Andrew Coffman and Elizabeth Clark Coffman. So I am not sure as to what County he would be in, in the 1870 census. We are trying to put together a list of his children. Apparently some were married by 1880 and we do not have a list of all. I thought the 1870 census might shed some light on this family. Do you know who may have a copy of the 1870 mortality schedules? Andrew Coffman, b. ca 1814 TN and died somewhere around 1870 Walker Co., GA. I am trying to find his death date. Thanks so much for the help. Loretta
