Ken, I would be interested in this also. I am a Jay descendant and researcher. Jay's Mill (owned by Jesse Jay), a steam powered sawmill, was where the battle started. It is near Reed's Bridge. Jesse Jay's niece Mariah (Moriah) Jay (1831-1913) was married to Edward Fowler (1821-1880) and they lived in the area. You might want to contact Jemima Reed Shirley who lives in Ringgold, GA. She is a descendant of both Jesse Jay AND the Reeds (of Reed Bridge fame) and knew the Fowlers growing up. Jemima is still an active researcher and involved with the Catoosa Historical group. She still owns a good deal of property in the area and took me on a tour of the battleground last year......detailing who owned what land and where. She has a good memory on the land ownership/location issues. There are also land deeds in Catoosa Co. involving the Jays and Fowlers for property in this area. Email me directly and I will give you Jemima's email address. The battlefield maps of Chickamauga almost all show Fowler's Ford on the right side of the map, south of Reed's Bridge. ( http://members.tripod.com/~ProlificPains/chickamauga.htm is typical.) Which Fowler was this named for? I'm pretty sure is isn't Joel, since he lived at the foot of Lookout Mountain. That leaves Joel's brothers Edward or Adolphus or their Daddy Drury. Or maybe their uncle William. Anybody know for sure? And in a similar vein, is there a property owners map of the area from that time? Thanks... I have found this so intriguing that I continued to search. The McGill's used the name Kearns in some censuses. I can't explain it, but in the 1880 Census, Robert B. Kearns is listed in Walker County, with a wife Adline, son Charles, daughter Caroline (who I suspect is Carey, aka Kay), son Barton, and son Joseph. Living next to them was Hubbard Kearns and wife Mahala, with a son named James McGill!!!. In the 1900 Census, these same people went by the name McGill. If you ever figure out what happened send me an email and let me know.
1910 Aaron, age 35, was married to Carrie, age 36. They had been married 3 years. It was the second marriage for him and the first for her. She had given birth to two children, both of whom were living. They were: James 2, and Justin 10 months. They can be found in Georgia, Walker County, Peavine ....................................... Thank you! Is Carrie a McGill? We were told the name was Kaye.Instead of the 10 mo old being Justin,it was Julius Anderson Mckin my father-in-law.You have solved my brick wall!.....lucimac
I did a little more looking, just for fun, and found Aaron in the 1900 census under the name McKeen. In 1900 he was still living with his family, at 1900, Georgia, Walker, W. Armuchee, E.D. 98, pg. 1A. His older brother John was head of household, and his widowed mother, Sarah, and three siblings were living with him. He is 25 and single. Therefore, he must have married both the first and second times between 1900 and 1910. Since the 1910 shows that he married Carrie around 1907, he would have had to marry Kay between 1900 and 1907. I couldn't find a Walker County Georgia marriage record for him even though he lived in Walker County from 1900 to 1920. Good luck.
I don't know anything about her, but, just for fun, I looked up Aaron McKin in the censuses for 1880, 1910, and 1920. In 1880 Aaron was age 5, living with his family (James and Sarah J. McKeen) in Cherokee County Alabama, Township 7, page 259A. In 1910 Aaron, age 35, was married to Carrie, age 36. They had been married 3 years. It was the second marriage for him and the first for her. She had given birth to two children, both of whom were living. They were: James 2, and Justin 10 months. They can be found in Georgia, Walker County, Peavine twp, page 159. In 1920, Aaron was listed in Georgia, Walker Co., Chestnut Flat, 869 Militia Dist., E.D. 174, page 4A. I can't find Aaron in the 1900 census, but a good guess would be to look in Cherokee County Alabama. Also, I would suggest checking the marriages for Cherokee County Alabama to see if you can find a marriage record for him and his first wife. Hope this helps.
Kaye Mcgill married Aaron McKin before 1910.They lived and had two sons in Walker Co Ga.Does anyone know of her and who her family may have been?Need her fathers and mothers names and any info,She was my husbands grandmother, and died very young.Thanks! Luci McKin
I am again looking for other descendants of James Middleton Smith who died about 1877 in Hamil, Randolph Co., AR. His first marriage was to Susan Wallen of Walker Co., GA. His second marriage to Mary C. Morris took place in April 1863 in Randolph Co., AR. The Children of James M. Smith and Susan Wallen were: William, Sally, Mary, Priscilla, Campbell, Nancy, Caroline, Martha, Tennessee and Henry. I think, but am not sure there was a child from the second marriage: Gilphy b. 1864. I am hoping by posting this information again we have new members who have not seen it and know of this family. Lots of craftsmen and craftwomen and lots of good cooking combined with plenty of entertainment will make a wonderful family outing. The old mill is on the National Register of Historic Places so it would be a great history lessons for the younguns. Come on out and join us! Paula http://pratersmill.org/ {for more info}
