Is there a list we need to get on.... Or just show up? Because you can count me in. I can also bring a scanner and a laptop with CD burner if anyone would like to copy items and digitize them then save them on a CD. I did this for our family reunion at this beginning of this month and actually got people to bring some older photos that I didn't have and was able to give CDs to people that wanted them. ~Ramona Powell Banks -----Original Message----- From: deerrun@mindspring.com [mailto:deerrun@mindspring.com] Sent: Thursday, May 27, 2004 9:00 AM To: GAWALKER-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [GAWALKER] Walker County Reunion And, welcome to you, Janey. I signed up a few weeks ago to this mailing list. I got the end conversation on the Walker County Reunion. Can someone please give me more information on it? Where, when, etc? Thanks, Ramona Powell Banks
Thank you all for your responses. Sue (deerrun) is going to make a trip to the Chattanooga Library for me I think. After searching their online obit. and finding him listed there, I'm betting he died in Chattanooga. Linda Sue (long-lost cousin), You sent me a picture once of the Campbell boys and that was all. Don't know which one is William though. I would definitely appreciate anything else you have. Funny our family apparently has a long history of not talking to each other. I have 2 aunts in their 80s who said they never met William. I know my grandfather left home when he was 12 and started sweeping floors at a house of ill repute in Chatt. Anyway, thanks Linda and thanks to all.
If good ole Deerrun makes a trip to the Library for you she had better do a twofur and get some info. for me What would we do without her? Ladye, those records are almost all transcribed. However, because of privacy to living people they are not being put online or in book form. I know they are public records but still people deserve some privacy. To answer your questions... the Walker County marriage books are located in the probate office (ground floor) of the courthouse on north Duke St in LaFayette. There are two motels in LaFayette, Key West Inn and Days Inn. Days Inn is the newer of the two and they are located side by side. Jon, Did I ever send you the family info on William and Flossie? If not then I will be happy to email it to you. I do not have any info on his parents though. Linda Sue
I said the Chattanooga Library charges $11.00 for the first death certificate... I should have said they charge $11.00 for the first obituary. They would probably treat a death certificate the same as an obit but it would be best to ask them first. Hamilton County TN Genealogical Society... obits, too. Delta will do either... a TN death certificate (1908-1950 except 1914) or an obit. Georgia death certificates are handled differently. We do have a GA death certificate index from 1919 through 1993 available. However, the cost for a GA death certificate is $10.00... that's what the state says has to be charged. Sue
Okay folks... just in case anyone missed it. The reunion date is Saturday, July 10, from 10:00 a.m. until... To be held at the Lee & Gordon Mill in Chickamauga. Bring whatever you would like to eat. I'll bring the paper products... plates, cups, napkins, folks, etc. plus a cooler of ice. There are two motels in north LaFayette on Hwy 27/136... Key West Inn and Days Inn. Key West Inn (2221 N. Main St (same as Hwys 27/136), LaFayette, GA 30728. Telephone number: 706-638-8200. Days Inn is on the south side of Key West Inn 2209 N. Main St., LaFayette, GA 30728. Telephone number: 638-7042. Days Inn is the newer of the two motels. I don't know of any motels in the Chickamauga area. Fort Oglethorpe is closer to Chickamauga than LaFayette. Best Western in Fort O., at 1715 LaFayette Rd., Fort Oglethorpe, GA 30742. Phone number 706-866-0222. There is another motel near Best Western but I don't remember the name right now. Will find out and post. Sue

The Chattanooga Library charges $11.00 for the first death certificate if ordered via mail. They do not take online request. The Chattanooga Hamilton County TN Genealogical Society (an online society only) charges $5.00 per request. The Delta Genealogical Society also charges $5.00 per request. Request from Delta can be done either online or by writing Delta Genealogical Genealogical Society, 504 McFarland Ave., Rossville, GA 30741. Their web site is www.rootsweb.com/~gadgs Delta also takes request for obits from The Walker County Messenger and The Open Door which was an old Rossville newspaper from sometimes in the 1930's (I think) to 1950's or 60's. I don't remember the exact dates of publication for them but can check if anyone is interested the next time I'm in the Rossville Library. The Walker County Messenger obits run from 1880 to present but none have been posted online. Sue

Jon - The Chattanooga Hamilton County Bicentennial Library has an index of obituaries posted in the Chattanooga newspapers from 1897 to the present. I do not know if this is yours or not, but their index shows a W. H. Campbell, obituary dated March 23, 1936 as being in this newspaper. I do not know how to get the obit without going to the Library, and I cannot do that right now, but I bet someone on the list knows how. I also do not know what info is in the obituary or if it can be obtained online. In case someone may not know, Chattanooga/Hamilton County has a great geanological society, and they are on the web at http://hctgs.org/ I got to the Library index from their site and typed in Campbell, W. H. When I typed in William, nothing came up. By the way, we hope to attend the Walker County reunion again this year, and I will bring the photos we have, and will try to post a complete list before the reunion. I am sorry to be so far behind, but we have had a serious illness in the family. Recording of death certificates prior to 1900 was relatively uncomon unless you were in the military. That is there was no central repository. They may have resided in the county but not at the state level. There are of course some exceptions in some of the more populous states of the North East but it just wasn't something that happened that frequently and that folks were that charged up about. There were mortality schedules that were sort of an offshoot of the census but not the regimented issue a death certificate and file it with a central authority that there is now. Even now there is not a lot of follow-up in tying death certificates to birth certificates or identity theft would be a much less common phenomenon than it is. Bill p.s. best documentation of death was typically from Local records, family bible, local newspaper, funeral home records, church records and probate of the will particularly if the person had land to be passed on to heirs. ----- Original Message ----- From: "jacs" <jacs@chartertn.net> To: <GAWALKER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, May 21, 2004 4:58 PM Subject: [GAWALKER] William H.
