    3. Beverly, The problem Kim referred to is there and is real it is not on all links just the ones that are of the general form http://www.geocities.com/~osburn/someotherurl if they are of the form http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Fields/6370/someotherurl they are fine and indeed if you replace the ~osburn with the full path above they work. I think Geocities changed some stuff and Sherry hasn't had time to update it. Either that or she fixed it and they subsequently restored from an old backup of her server. I have looked for some things and had the problem Kim had. ----- Original Message ----- From: Beverly Forrester To: [email protected] Sent: Wednesday, March 14, 2001 9:30 PM Subject: Re: [GAWALKER] Walker County Page Kim, She was having some problems last year and I've tried to contact her also. 1. [GAWALKER] Re: Durham Mines Book
    2. I was just reminded of a book I had gotten many years ago. I had read it then, and still have it but had forgotten about it. The book was written in 1977 and is 'The Old Miner and His Guardian Angel' by Earnest Hollingsworth (of Walker County). I just this year found out that we are related. But so is everybody in the county. The book contains a good insight into early county life and particularly the Durham mines where he worked for a while. It even has one picture of the area around the mine. According to the Dade Co. Message Board, the Dade library doesn't have a copy of it. Does anybody know if there is a copy in the Walker Co. library? I would recommend getting and reading it.

    2. Perhaps this isn't useful information, BUT... was looking for my stepmother's dad who is buried in Dalton. Someone suggested that I call the county coroner, so I did. I figured she'd think I was a nutcase calling her just to ask where someone MIGHT be buried in Dalton. BUT... to my surprise, the lady was wonderful & very helpful... she made calls & found all of the information for me, then faxed me a death certificate & other info. Maybe you could try the Walker Co. Coroner???????? It can't hurt anyway. Sheila

    3. Dear List Members, I belong to many mailing list besides the ones I am List Mom for. I had a real eye opener this weekend on several of them and it made me appreciate each of you more than you will ever know. I saw members putting each other down, demeaning one another, screaming at each other if one could scream via an e-mail. I saw new members leave because they were made to feel foolish only because they did not know the rules of the list. I feel blessed to be the List Mom of your list and I thank you with all of my heart for the manner in which you handle yourselves on it and for the way you treat each other. Because of each of you I am able to take care of as many lists and I do - and love each and every moment of it. Kathleen Burnett List Mom

    3. Kim, I don't know what happened to the Smith Funeral Home but I have seen the name several times before. I know it was in Chattanooga. You might check the Chattanooga City Directories. Have you checked for a TN death certificate for your Dunwoody ancestor? The TN death certificates are on microfilm at the Chattanooga/Hamilton Co Library for that time period. Although filing a birth or death certificate in GA became law in 1919, I have seen cases all the way into the 1940's where one wasn't filed. The most recent that I searched for was a death in 1944. 2. Hello List, I was hoping that someone could help me out with something. I have been searching for my ggrandfather's parents, and I'm just not having any luck. I have tried to find a death certificate for him, but apparently there isn't one. I do have his obituary, and it says that the funeral services were held in the Mission Ridge Baptist Church, interment Mission Ridge Cemetery, and in charge Smith Funeral Service, Inc. My question is, does anyone out there know anything about this Smith Funeral Service, Inc? I have never heard of it before. I was just wondering if the name had since changed to something else, or if and when it shut down.... Ps. My ggrandfather's name was James Glenn Dunwoody, and he died in Rossville, Georgia, June 1934.. Would appreciate any help or suggestions. Many thanks in advance!! 3. At one point, Murray County Georgia encompassed all the land in Walker, Murray, Whitfield, Catoosa and Dade counties. The legislature reportedly passed a bill that stated that the county seat could be no further away from the furthest point in any county than one day's ride by horseback! That is when Murray county was reportedly broken into the counties listed above. If my memory serves me correctly, I think this happened in 1833. Seems as though there is a book that is entitled Walker County, the first 150 years - 1833 to 1883 that gives a lot of historical info concerning the early days in Walker county.
