    1. [GAWALKER] my intro - Durham Road
    2. Hello listers, I was on the EVANS list and wasn't making too much progress, then somebody suggested I get on the GADADE list, and then I got on the GAWALKER list, and now I believe I am related to everybody in Dade and Walker Cty. My dad was born on Durham Road, his family were coal miners at the Durham Coal and Mine Co, I visited Durham Rd a few years back, was totally overwhelmed to actually find it, then I met a man who had actually worked with one of my grandfathers brothers, Lack Evans - Mr. Harmon showed me around and I took pieces of coal that still lay on the ground and I listened to the earth to see if I could hear the long ago voices of my ancestors tell me how they survived and to maybe learn how I could survive in the present. On the 1910 census my dad was listed as being born Gordon Tom Evans, I always knew him as Thomas Gordon, my ancestors were Avans, somehow the spelling got changed thru the years, I know all in the library thought I was nuts when I saw my dad listed as being 1 year old on the film - to walk on Durham Road and to know that my feet were touching the same ground as my people from many, many years ago was an awesome and humbling experience, I know I felt their spirits in the wind on Durham Road and I knew in that moment I would never be alone, they would always be with me. Some things I have learned have not been "present time pretty" and it makes me sad to think some things could happen to a generation who suffered so much and knew the agony of pain and poverty. My dads sister, the firstborn, was born in TN., don't know when nor why they came to Durham Road, except that work=food=life. Would love to hear from any of you, if you have anything that you want to share I would love to hear from you. If you want a copy of my line as I have it so far, I can download it to you off-list, don't think the list takes attachments. delilah evans/avans Thomas Gordon Evans - my dad Thomas Watson Evans - my grandfather married Bennie Tinker Thomas Jefferson Avans - my ggrandfather - married Sarah Page Nunahi Duna Dio Hilu I

    2. Wa Do Linda Sue, do you have your registration, with that info, you should. I have seen a lot of "Delilah" name on the rolls, makes me wonder why I was named that, where is McMinn County, TN., I have seen mention of a Monroe Cty, Tn but cannot find it in TN now, have I missed it? Wish I knew more Cherokee, my daddy wrote poems and things and I always thought he had a melody to his voice and now I know why - My ancestors were Avans, then it gradually got changed in the spelling to Evans - I am going to change mine back to Avans, my dad told me to when I took back my maiden name of Evans, he said to spell it Avans. delilah evans/avans At 08:21 3/16/01 EST, you wrote: >Osiy'o Delilah. > >I love the name Delilah! >I have been searching for more information on my Wilkerson family that was in >Walker and Dade Counties. The "shortcut" address does not work and seldom (if ever) has but GC continues to use this despite my trying to get it changed. Many search engines and genealogy lists have my WEB pages linked with the unusable shortcut. I have repeatedly tried to get FTM's search engine to change my links but they will not and therefore, people who find my pages through FTM seldom can reach my site. I expect it is the same for other search engines. Although I have submitted my URLs to several search engines, including FTM, Yahoo and others, and I used the full GeoCities address, their crawlers apparently check out the pages and record the shortcut URLs instead. I found my Great Grandmother and her brothers and one sister and one aunt on those Guion Miller Rolls you spoke of. She was listed as Iley A. I would love to find someone else on this list that is also looking for this family. Linda Sue

    3. Duke, I talked to Betty Johnson today in the LaFayette Library and no, they do not have a copy of this book by Earnest Hollingsworth either. They would like a copy. Linda Sue hasn't answered about where it can be found yet. If anyone knows, I wish they would let me know. I had read it then, and still have it but had forgotten about it. The book was written in 1977 and is 'The Old Miner and His Guardian Angel' by Earnest Hollingsworth (of Walker County). I just this year found out that we are related. But so is everybody in the county. The book contains a good insight into early county life and particularly the Durham mines where he worked for a while. It even has one picture of the area around the mine. According to the Dade Co. Message Board, the Dade library doesn't have a copy of it. Does anybody know if there is a copy in the Walker Co. library? > I would recommend getting and reading it. > > > ==== GAWALKER Mailing List ==== > NOTICE: Posting of virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, political > announcements, current events, items for sale, personal messages, flames, > etc. (in other words - spam) is NOT ALLOWED and will be grounds for removal. > Consideration for exceptions, contact Kathleen Burnett [email protected] > To learn more about my world visit http://dwp.bigplanet.com/kburnett >

    1. [GAWALKER] Cherokee By Blood
    2. CHEROKEE BY BLOOD Records of Eastern Cherokee Ancestry in the U.S. Court of Claims 1906-1910 This is a set of 9 books (I have the first 2). "In 1904 the Eastern Cherokee won a million-dollar judgement against the U.S. because of its violation of the treaties of 1835-36 and 1845. The payments were to go to all living persons who had been members of the Eastern Cherokee tribe at the time of the treaties, or to their descendants if they were deceased. Over 46,000 people filed claims. This series of volumns presents detailed abstracts of those applications, including numerous verbatim transcriptions of affidavits by the applicants, their families and friends. Since most of the applicants were descendants, rather than original tribe members, and had to prove their descent, the quantity of genealogical data in these volumns is staggering. About 9/10 of the applicants lived west of the Mississippi (probably because of The Trail of Tears [my comment]) in the early 1900's when they made their applications, with the balance living predominantly in the southeast. Although the applicants had to had Indian ancestry, the majority were normally white, and a significant number of blacks are also included." I hope to eventually get all 9 volumns and if you want a name researched, let me know, if you are interested in purchasing these books, go to www.heritagebooks.com - the cost is about 40. per book. delilah evans/avans Nunahi Duna Dio Hilu I We Must Never Forget the "Trail of Tears". 2. I have many of my URLS book marked and never had any trouble with any of them. When rootsweb did there revamping several weeks ago. I have had trouble with many that I had book marked, so whatever changes they made during that time did affect many of my bookmarks. Some still come up with the explanation that was posted by rootsweb at the weekend of revaming.. Don't know if this is of help to anyone. I was passing Walker Co on to friends not knowing it had been affected. I have passed on several others from TN and Al and received notices again telling me they weren't working. Going in and then checking my bookmarks after your postings , I found quite a few not working. Wla

    2. John W Williams was my great-uncle, the son of Sampson Williams and Mahala Parrish (or Parish). Sampson/Malala are my GGF/M. They had six kids. Hattie was, of course John W's daughter. I don't know who Martha was. Maybe she is related to Marvin. I am at work now, but when I get home tonight I will check it. I have also found several spellings of John w's wife, Lusendie, or Lucinda, or Cinda Hollingsworth. I don't know which is correct. I would like to correspond with you more about filling in some of John W's family tree, from John W down to present. My wifes family name is Adams who moved to Walker Co. from Dade Co. in the 1950's; and originally from Bridgeport AL. Are they the same group as yours? Duke Williams

Linda Sue, I clean forgot that you were Hollingsworth kin. I guess the mind must be going. Hope you can get the book to Sue for the Library. I really enjoyed reading it. I will copy Delilah on the GADADE message board about the book also. She was interested in it. Delilah, check out the GAWALKER message board for Linda Sues's email address. 3. Linda Sue, I saw your reference to Hollingsworth family and thought you were the person to ask. I recently returned from a visit home and got new information about our Hixon family. My husband's g-grandmother was Hattie Viola Williams (b. 1894, d. 1982) married to Grover Cleveland Hixon (b. 1886, d. 1952). According to his grandmother Adams, Hattie's father was John W. Williams, but we have heard several different versions of Hattie's mother's name over time. Do you have any Hollingsworth women named Lucinda, Mahala, or Martha who may have been married/related to Marvin Hollingsworth? Grandma Hixon Adams is getting a little confused in her senior years and we need some help to sort these folks out. TIA, Cindy & Wilbur Strickland (Of Catoosa Co., GA; now living in England)
