Mines again..... I just looked up Marvel, Alabama & got a website that said Marvel Community Sports/Bessemer, Ala. Sheila
The earliest iron works in the area near what later bacame Birmingham was the Tannehill Iron works eight miles southwest of Bessemer, just across the county line in Tuscaloosa County. My ancestor, Moses Stroup designed and built Tannehill Furnace #1 and he lived in Bibb County. The iron works was very near the intersection of Tuscaloosa, Jefferson, and Bibb counties lines. Off the subject.... your name Evans/Avans....... have you ever seen it shown as Eavins? In my family files, there's a reference to a marriage to a Miss Eavins.... I saw her in another file as Evans. I believe this marriage was to a Dobson, son of Permelia Ransom (not sure, would have to DIG through the files to see). Permelia was a daughter of Washington Ransom I believe... the Ransoms moved to Henry Co., Ga... then Catoosa I think (Dogwood Valley.. is that Catoosa or Whitfield)... then to Walker Co. I believe Permelia stayed in Henry or Catoosa.. not sure. Sheila
Well, I was told Bessemer Mines, but I don't know a thing about that area. I knew it was a different county, but I figured maybe he was transported there. Since you know a bit about this, perhaps this info will help. Deceased name: L.C. Koger City/town on death certificate is Marvel County is Bibb on death certif. Date of death is Aug. 12, 1914 His son Sampson Koger was killed at the same time & place. Is there a mining community called Marvel??? If you have any clues, let me know. Thanks! Sheila
Marvel may of been the name of one of the mining villages, most were just small places where the miners families lived, most are no longer there, although some of the places bacame small towns. delilah evans At 23:28 3/21/01 EST, you wrote: >Mines again..... > I just looked up Marvel, Alabama & got a website that said Marvel Community >Sports/Bessemer, Ala. Don't recognize the name right off - our name was originally spelled AVANS, then was gradually mispelled until it became EVANS, I have never seen the spelling as Eavins, maybe it was also mispelled - delilah evans At 23:20 3/21/01 EST, you wrote: >Off the subject.... your name Evans/Avans....... have you ever seen it >shown as Eavins? Sherry, There were no Haddox/Haddock listed in the surname index of THE WALKER COUNTY GEORGIA HERITAGE BOOK, 1833-1883. The closest was Hadden. I checked HISTORY OF WALKER COUNTY GEORGIA by James A Sartain.... only one listing on page 289 in a roster for World War vets [referring to WW I]: HADDOCK, Wallace C. That was all the information on him, just his name. Sue Thank you Sue for looking for me, I do appreciate it. On the Hadden name did you by chance find a James or Bevin? Sometimes they did spell the last name like this. Sincerely Sherry

Sue, I apoligize fro asking the same question that you answered for me back on Jan. 25 (Re: Dry Valley Indian Cemetery and ELLIS). Sometimes my searches go in circles. So many papers, I must get better organized. Yes, that's the same ALFRED WILLIAMS who married your Matilda Hutson. As discussed earlier I had found him and mother(?) ELIZABETH in Campbell Co TN on 1850 Census. Also living with them was MARY. Could this be Matilda? You say that there were 2 daughters, Elizabeth Summerfield and Helen Winter. I assume that their kin stayed in the Valley? Does a 'tree' exist for their descendents that I could look at? Is it online anywhere? I'd really like to make my SAMPSON and your ALFRED brothers, with ELIZABETH their mother. Thanks again for you response, Duke
Could someone check the Walker County Heritage Book and see if there are any Dunwoody's listed please? Thanks in advance, it is very much appreciated.. Kim
