Hi again, Shelia, the only thing that I know on these two is they lived in Whitaker before show in the Walker Co. Maybe in the Southeast area. I am very sorry but I also know that they are on the Probate Docket for that county. Sure hope that you can find something. Thanks so much for any help. Thanks, Terry in CA P.S. Do you know who might be able to do a lookup on the Probate Docket?
will look for them.... Sheila
Terry, Were they really returns? If you send something to the list when it sends it to everyone it will also send it to you because you are on the list. I checked the index then looked at EVERY page in the book individually... didn't find ANY Youngbloods in that cemetery book! There are unmarked graves of course. Sorry I couldn't help ... will keep an eye for that name though. Sheila
Can you get newspaper articles from the paper in LaFayette GA. My grandmother's third husband was killed in what was said to be a hunting accident in late 1927 or early 1928. My mother said he was really killed by the KKK because he was a heavy drinker and was not caring for his family like he should have! His name was William Albert (or Albert William) Barnett and a brother or son Charles Barnett may have been injured at the same time. thanks jackie
Freddie - I can't locate those names in my family anywhere except for a Mary Jane White. She was the dtr of Will WHITE and Susan WINNINGHAM, and was born in Overton County, TN around 1870. My husband's family from the Walker County area descend from E.E. White (I think he is one of those at the Antioch Cemetery too!) who married Adaline EVITT/EVATT, and then through their son John Ruffin WHITE who married Mollie BELL. I am sorry I can't help you any further. I would like to also add something about Catoosa County. It is just across the state line from Chattanooga, TN. It has been known for years as the place to go get married in a hurry. We have friends from Nashville, TN, some from around Lexington, KY and several from Alabama who went down there just to get married. Sort of like a southern Las Vegas, without the romance. You could get the blood test across the street from the courthouse and walk across the street and get married, all in about an hour, and all for about $10.00. I don't know how long this 'quickie wedding stuff' has been going on though. Our friends marriages go back into the 1940's. I think the age was lower in Georgia also. Our friends in Nashville skipped school on Monday, caught the Greyhound bus to Ringgold, and got back in time to catch the school bus home. They didn't tell anyone for months! Just thought I would share that. Bonnie >
Janet Shirley lived in Chattanooga during the late 1980's and her books and Cherokee newsletters all dealt with Cherokee genealogy. She did a lot of local research at the Chattanooga Bicentennial Library. I saw the book on http://www.abebooks.com under her name as author recently but it was $48.00!! You might be able to get it on interlibrary loan. Shirley sold the books herself. She was a wonderful source for my own genealogy. I have been unable to find her since she left Chattanooga. If you live near a good library, you might be able to look at the applications. Each is numbered and it looks like the Martin descendents were among the first processed. Shirley's book shows that Application # 126 Anna R. Cothran; #127 Alice R. Cothran; #128 Stephen C. Rowland; #129 Martha Garnish; #545; #585; #632; #672; and #1032 filed as Joseph's descendents. I do not know the names of the last few of these people who claimed to be descendents of this Joseph Martin, but they should be fairly easy to find. I looked at the alphabetical index for my great grandmother's name. It gave her name and her application number. The microfilm, with the copies of the actual application, was in numeric order. In my own case, my ancestors were rejected through the Court of Claims, but their applications were a genuine goldmine of family information spanning 4 generations!!! I will be gone on vacation beginning tomorrow night so may not contact anyone for a week or so. Don't know if I can retrieve my email where we are going or not. Good luck to all and God's blessings in abundance. Bonnie
These are two couples that connect to my Pettyjohn family. If you have any information on either I would appreciate hearing from you. Thanks, Trudy JOHN PETTYJOHN married January 20, 1889 to ELIZABETH ALLMAN. J. PETTYJOHN married November 18, 1888 to MARY ALICE SWEET.
When the gov't started closing the different post offices here on Lookout Mountain which included Pittsburg, Ascalon, Dillon, etc., the mail was finally routed through the Rising Fawn Post office. And it is still routed that way today. People up here on the mountain are from 10 to 25 miles from the Rising Fawn P.O. Rising Fawn is in Dade County in the valley at the western foot of Lookout Mountain approximately 8/9 miles south of Trenton. I wish we could get our own Post Office here on the mountain once again. Find out the county and call the school board in that county and ask them about the records. It would either be walker or dade co. Elsie
According to my dads notes, Durham was the name of the mining community, Pittsburg, Ga was the name of the area which was later changed to Rising Fawn, Ga., according to Mr. Harmon. I have letters postmarked Pittsburg, Ga in the 1917,18, 1914 - from my grandfather to his wife and from other relatives that had already left that area. delilah At 21:35 5/2/01 -0400, you wrote: >Per the History of Walker County, > >Gillen School was established in 1949 effecting the consolidation of the >Ascalon and Durham Schools. I am posting to ask Bonnie White a couple of questions! I tried to send a message direct to her e-mail address and it came back, un-deliverable! I note Bonnie's last name is White and she must have considerable info on her family and that she is on the Walker Co boards! I am searching for parents on my Fredrick H. White b. abt 1842 in Tn d. abt 1892 in Scott Co Ar. He married Dec 13-1866 in Catoosa Co Ga to Mary Ann Bird They had Nancy Elizabeth b. abt 1867 in Ga, my grandmother Mary Jane White b. Sep 26-1869 in Ga. They migrated to Scott Co Ar before 1875 Bonnie I sure do hope you read this! Freddie B Stewart (named after Freddric White)
Sue, You are right about the name Pittsburg. My Grandfather listed that as the place of his birth. I later found out that is was the same as the Durham area. It must have meant something to him because he listed Pittsbug on his WW2 Records as well. Linda Sue
